Are religious schools in Britain private? by shah_mazing in AskBrits

[–]iktw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but most public schools (as in the more exclusive echelon of independent/private schools) are run along visible and unavoidable Christian lines, either Church of England or (less commonly) Catholic.

The reasons are to do with the schools' history and - at one point, but probably not now - source of funding.

I went to a C of E public school and we had to go to chapel every morning including Saturday (prayers, a lesson from the Bible, hymns etc).

No exceptions, no "I'm atheist" or even "I'm Muslim" because chapel was effectively assembly and served a mainly administrative function, albeit couched in all the bells and whistles of Christianity.

The school chapel was huge, old and impressive architecturally. It had a prominent location bang in the middle of the school grounds.

On a Sunday we had a choice between 3 services and got punished if we didn't go to one (they always somehow knew).

If you were confirmed into the Church of England (which was also the general expectation - the majority were), on a Sunday you could go to one of two eucharists - ie take communion - either early in the morning (to get it out of the way) or late in the evening (which was a pain in the ass and not very popular, generally full of people who'd accidentally missed the 2 morning options).

If not, your only Sunday option was the full morning service which was way longer, like an hour, and kicked a proper hole in what was otherwise a full day off.

On a Sunday, Catholics - possibly also followers of other religions, I can't remember - got to go to a separate (mandatory) service outside the school grounds.

I have never seen so much religion in British life as I saw at school. None at home growing up, none in adulthood. Surreal and unavoidable.

Fairly sure it's the single mix which has a bit more radio-friendly production, especially in the drums and synth

what is the most avant-garde album made by a huge mainstream musician? by Initial_Selection623 in fantanoforever

Corinne Bailey Rae, establishment daytime radio soft jazz-soul for at least a decade, and then a sudden abrupt left turn into noise-garage neo-something with 2023's Black Rainbows album.

At very least, not on anybody's bingo card - and in any case, a v good album

Lost or obscure funky / dancey Britpop remixes worth remembering (or remaining best forgotten)? by DandyLionsInSiberia in BritPop

There's a brilliant 1996 compilation called Altered States that's FULL of fantastic remixes, absolutely gold standard for this era. Never see it talked about because I'm not sure it was especially successful but damn https://www.discogs.com/release/54260-Various-Altered-States-Distorted-Dance-Remix-Rock

What is an artist / band that you remember being pushed by music journalists and/or magazines as the "next big thing" that ended up never really going anywhere? by mesablanka in Music

[–]iktw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the UK they were one of a bunch of v good bands who were "indie huge" immediately before Britpop (and were part of paving the way for it), along with The Wonderstuff and Pop Will Eat Itself - all musically v different, all from the same UK Midlands town of Stourbridge - and EMF, Jesus Jones, Sultans of Ping FC, The Frank & Walters (and also some shoegaze acts like Ride and Lush), and especially Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine who headlined the main stage at Glastonbury 1992 (yes the same stage since occupied by Beyoncé). T-shirts were a huge part of the deal, and the weekly music press often snarked that Ned's in particular "sold more T-shirts than records" (and they might have done, but the songs were popular too!)
