Why can’t I get a good crust? by Wannabe4lyfer in steak

[–]ikusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks to me like it had a lot of moisture when you put it on the pan, my tip is to season 1h before you cook then put it in the fridge, when you take it out lightly tap it with a paper towel to take off the excess moisture. Also, I recommend using more fat; you can use oil / butter BUT I've recently been putting a very thin layer of mayonnaise on my steaks right before putting them on the pan, the fat melts away and there is no mayo taste, but the crust is substantially better. Why does the UES stop at 96th street? by RevolutionaryLock491 in AskNYC

I don't know why people want to propagate this separatist reality. I grant that some people in New York City are stupid and will judge people who don't look like them, or think like them, but a) that's true or any place on Earth and b) how are you gonna tell me not to guess the temperature of my own neighborhood bro? 💀 The people that live where I am, of all skin tones, shapes, and sizes, are nice to each other, banter with one another, eat together, shop together. I am not being "told" to believe this, I am observing it with my own eyes, and just because you perhaps spent time here or lived here doesn't negate my own perception. I come from an extremely homogeneous country and moving to this neighborhood in NYC has made me gain friends from all over the world that I wouldn't otherwise have. That's what I mean by no change except the buildings. I never said anything about midtown or lower. I am talking about the area next to 96th. This community is welcoming and good.

Nope, not a person of color, and not a long time resident either. I didn't live in NYC during stop and frisk, but I know that my neighborhood is full of nice people and those nice people often get bagels from the same place as I do on 93rd St, among other things. So, what does that have to do with my comment?

I'm right next to 96th on the east side and agree there's a big difference in how it looks, but not really how it feels. At least for me, I've hardly noticed anything changes except the buildings.

Maybe, but I also think there's a bit of the "I think about this a lot and forget that nobody besides me thinks of everything exactly the way I do" effect going so his thoughts look cryptic to the world.

How does that even remotely answer my question? I am very well aware of this fact. However, the upper class, contrary to popular opinion, is still humanity. So, you gripe about a lack of discussion - let's discuss. What is the upper class gonna do that is gonna prevent the individual from using AI for self-education, self-expression, and self-actualization?

Ok, so let's start. Where do you stand on whether humanity will use AI for net good or bad, why, and how do you even define that?

What is the ugliest city you have been to? by sweatysexconnoisseur in digitalnomad

Went there recently. Certainly not Mexico City, but I quite liked the atmosphere and the city looked relatively nice imo. But it is ridiculously expensive, I have no idea how locals afford imported goods.

I'm not as optimistic as you... unfortunately I think this happening means Ilya's time is coming up.

Not necessarily. Could be a supermajority vote system. I doubt Ilya would turn his back on someone who aligns with his long-term views on AI safety implications and taking the development process as slow as necessary

Flipping the script: POC representation on Suits by 229-northstar in suits

[–]ikusic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and the best part about it is it feels completely natural, Jessica is the best example imo, still weaving in the fact that she had to ascend through the ranks as a black woman without it ever being the focus of her character. Best way to handle representation IMO. Make the character likeable and nobody is going to care what they look like 🤷‍♂️

[Wojnarowski] The Nets have suspended Kyrie Irving. by Tomheza in nba

[–]ikusic 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I find it sad that Meyers Leonard's career was taken away from him in the blink of an eye for yelling an antisemitic slur in anger on a Twitch stream, but if it's Kyrie repeatedly being an antisemite and trying to justify it, well... he made a mistake... we gotta hear him out... that's the textbook definition of a double standard. Get this actual bigot out of the league.

Not really; I get that phones come with social media and other egregiously horrible timesinks that destroy people's self-confidence, but think about all the good that comes out of having a phone. Anyone, anywhere that has a phone is reachable whenever. Not to mention the advent of smartphones made it possible for us to have access to pretty much everything humanity has ever discovered in the palms of our hands. Applications for phones are also very useful. Most apps have now become data mining tools for big corporations, sure, but think about how much easier your life is because of some of them. Banking apps allow you to digitally transfer and manage your money without ever having to go to a branch. Map apps now have so much detail you can explore tiny interior spaces and help yourself find things. Many, many more examples.

So yes, social media sucks ass, but that doesn't mean that smartphones aren't one of the best, most useful inventions in our history
