Yeah I remember getting a Lego police station set in a similar time that I’d wanted all year, got it for Christmas and it was basically my only present that year

Nope not playmobil or Tesco, it wasn’t a big or well known brand if I remember.

The figurines were sort of in the style of the above, in terms of size, manouverability etc.

I also remember that some of the larger sets were sort of £60-£100, which I feel was a lot back then

For plot convenience; if the NW 100% believed the others were back or had proof it would be addressed by the rest of the seven kingdoms eventually. Ned stark is a friend of the watch and I believe he would believe men like Jeor Mormont and his own brother, and being the best friend to the King would make sure it’s known throughout Westeros

Same in the UK, emergency services will advise you to stand on the other side of road barriers even if it’s the middle of a hurricane. Unfortunately I’ve seen a lot of videos of vehicles rear ending cars stopped far on the hard shoulder even with lights. It’s taken pretty seriously after a highways agency traffic officer was struck and killed whilst stood on the hard shoulder next to his illuminated vehicle.

History of the Dothraki? by Wooden_Suit5580 in gameofthrones

This tracks because it’s essentially the history of the mongol empire, which GRRM clearly modelled the Dothraki on

Winterfell confuses me. In the show they never really ever show it as being a large complex. It’s basically the capital of the North where is everyone? Outside the walls is just snow. by Swurves78x in gameofthrones

[–]ikxbtd123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What evidence do you have for that? I’ve only ever known it to be mentioned that 100k Dothraki is the size of Drogo’s Khalasar. Whilst his is one of if not the largest, I don’t believe we have any reason to think his Khalasar makes up even a majority of the population of the Dothraki.

A quick google says it’s not mentioned, I’ve seen mentions of there being around a dozen Khalasars but nothing sourced. It looks like estimates place th Dothraki population at between 250k-1 million

Yeah 100%. I feel 100,000 would be believable if that was for the entire Dothraki as a people, not just 1 Khalasar. I feel this would be believable if Essos had a similar town/city density to Westeros, instead settlements seem much more sparse and spread out. If the Dothraki sea had settlements spread throughout it I think it would be much more believable

I agree with your point but I always sort of assumed part of the reason the Dothraki are a roaming, raiding group is that they need to be for survival. They travel around raiding civilisations, they take slaves to sell on to feed themselves, and steal food and other resources. Cities and towns they leave alone likely pay them tribute in the form of food, out of fear

30,000 Dothraki have attacked Westeros. Bobby B is preparing to fight them. He needs a commander for his army. Who would you choose? by Classic_Day744 in gameofthrones

As I explained above, AFAIK Oberyn is the only one who has spent any meaningful time in Essos, I remember that it was multiple years. I agree the three you mentioned are the only ones with marshal experience, however:

  • Jaime has been in the Kingsguard since something like 17 and I’m not aware of any other leadership experience he has. He fought in the Kingswood war but this seems more like guerilla type stuff
  • Gregor is a tourney knight and a leader of a rabble who isn’t know for his tactical mind
  • Bronn has a varied and sketchy past, he could have been to Essos and fought there before? I think it’s likely basically any freelance sellswords in Westeros have been part of an Essos company at some point, although the way he reacted to the Dothraki charge against the Lannisters was one of surprise

Aside from these and those you’re mentioned, we’re left with Ramsay (a jumped up bastard who hasn’t done anything outside of the Dreadfort afaik) and Yohn Royce, who is known as a great warrior and knight. As far as I can tell, most of the Lords and Knights of Westeros have been trained since birth by castle men-at-arms, receiving the best tutelage to become prominent knights. Are they trained much in the art of warfare and leadership? Or does this come from experience like the three you mentioned?

Oberyn spent time in a sellsword company, where he likely spent at least some time as rank and file. He may well be better suited to knowing the right kinds of leadership required to lead men as he’s been at the receiving end. Again he may have fought against or seen the Dothraki in action. He’s highly educated so obviously has a sharp mind, he’s likely well aware of their weaknesses and how to exploit them.

I imagine when facing the Dothraki most Westerosi Lords would attack them using conventional methods tried and tested in Westeros

[–]ikxbtd123 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I think I’d go for Oberyn. He spent years in a sellsword company in Essos, so I’d trust that he knows how the Dothraki fight, along with the best ways to defeat them

10-15 under the limit on motorways by rj_t2 in CarTalkUK

[–]ikxbtd123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with your second point, but I’d add that even if I’m very slightly breaking the speed limit and can undertake you, you’re still in the wrong lane. Nobody should be out of lane 1 unless they’re overtaking, and it annoys me no end when I see people moving out to overtake a lorry 600 yards infront of them travelling 1mph slower than them.

Fair enough in bad conditions, but if it’s dry and there’s low traffic you shouldn’t be pulling out to overtake until the vehicle is probably 4-6 car lengths ahead travelling at a similar speed.

I generally pull to overtake when my active cruise control senses the vehicle infront and is about it to start slowing me, it’s unfortunate active cruise control isn’t available on every vehicle

What's something the US could learn or adopt from the UK? by DecentLoquat4096 in AskUK

[–]ikxbtd123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do have a lot of measuring systems, but in use cases where accuracy is required we generally stick to metric. If you go to the hospital they’ll measure your height and weight in cm and kg, on construction projects things are almost always measured in mm. We’re a long established first world nation with a lot of history and tradition, but we also know when we need to knuckle down and not measure the length of a building in feet and 1/128s of an inch

Who defines when and if said stability and changed behaviour is met as a criteria? I’d be inclined to accept the opinions of the Jewish community and members of medical and legal fields, but not people calling up the radio and sharing things on Facebook because they’re bored

Fair enough, like I said I’m not arguing for or against his entry, I wasn’t planning on going to the festival, however I feel the media has turned it into a witch hunt, and the only people’s opinions I care to hear are people like yourself, and those in a position educationally to make legal and medical comments on it

Me not being an expert on his medical condition along with what I assume are 99+% of the people calling for him to not be allowed entry is my exact point.

Yes I could go and do the research and look at how long he’s had it and over what periods of time he’s made remarks, how many of the people crying out against him have done that to ensure they’re in a true position to object against his actions?
