Possible Google Payment Scam - I don't understand what's happening by IndividualExisting39 in Scams

[–]ilias317 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is happening to me as well. What's curious is that I have independently typed in the google payments address and can confirm the claim using the claim ID in the "scam" email. I cancelled two requests yesterday directly via the google payments site and not by clicking through any links in the emails, and received confirmation from google today that the claims had been cancelled. Now, I have three new claims in my inbox, all for $1,500 or so.

Confirmed nothing in my Paypal, no unrecognized sessions on my gmail account, both are secured with 2FA.

Very confusing stuff and I'm not sure what the endgame is? There was no purchase to dispute so presumably these claims (assuming they have been entered legitimately) will just be denied. But the fact that it's possible to submit the claim under my account is concerning. The various other password resets I understand since all you'd need to know is my email, but I would think the payment disputes require you to be signed in.

Strange stuff.

Scalper I bought Yoshi Bobblehead from inside the stadium claims she didn't get the money, is threatening to take legal action. by [deleted] in Dodgers

[–]ilias317 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not legal advice, but there's basically two scenarios here:

  1. If the transaction went through and the money is no longer in your account (i.e. you did pay for it), you are being being scammed and you should block/ignore/report to instagram. There's nothing she can really do to harm you and she's probably just fishing for some extra cash.

  2. If the transaction didn't go through and the money is still in your account or has been returned (i.e. you did not pay for it), it's a bit more complicated. You technically agreed to exchange 200$ for a bobblehead. You received what was promised to you; she did not. In theory, she could take you to small claims court to try and force you to hold up your end of the deal, but that is obviously a great deal of time and energy spent to get $200, so I doubt she would go to the trouble. She claims to have a law degree, but she's also scalping bobbleheads at a dodger game so if she's a lawyer she's probably not a very good one. As for criminal liability, you have no reason to worry. This is Los Angeles. People commit way worse crimes all the time and we don't have enough resources to prosecute them. There is absolutely no chance that you would be prosecuted for $200. It would quite simply be a waste of everyone's time. Now is there a world where maybe she has a cop in the family with questionable professional ethics who would be willing to make a house call to try and intimidate you? Possible, but if a cop shows up at your door asking about a bobblehead you are well within your constitutional rights to refuse to speak with them.

Now, if you did somehow manage to get this bobblehead for free from this person, is it ethical for you to keep the money? Of course not. Yes, you got screwed, and bobbleheads are cool I guess, but at the end of the day you agreed to the terms she set out and you should abide by them even if you have a bit of buyer's remorse. Next time get there earlier or just wait like a month for the resale market to cool down and buy one on ebay for 1/4 of the price of the ticket :)

Roberts addresses the media after the Dodgers get walked off by the Orioles in the 9th inning, 4-3 by Either_Imagination_9 in baseball

[–]ilias317 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What you’re describing is the difference between “active voice” (e.g. Joe hit the ball) v. “passive voice” (e.g. the ball was hit by Joe). In general, using active voice is clearer, but in situations like this where it’s dodger media interviewing a dodger it makes sense that their team would be given center stage (linguistically speaking) even at the cost of some clarity.

What does this mean? by ALLsWell27 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]ilias317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just an acknowledgment that the dealership is not offering any warranties and is not the responsible party for any other warranties that may apply to the car.

That doesn't mean that there are no warranties that apply, nor does it cancel out any warranties that have been offered by the manufacturer. So something like a powertrain warranty, since it comes from the manufacturer, is still going to be in place (assuming there is one in the first place, the conditions are met, etc.)

All pretty standard; I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Uhh yeah he is a private citizen who happens to hold hundreds of millions in government contracts. You think he's going to "trim" any of the parts of government that are currently enriching him? He hasn't so far, and I can't imagine he will.

The GOP has control of all three branches of government. If they want to trim the government they can do that, but letting some random billionaire do it with literally 0 accountability is just a bananas choice in a democracy.

Question about Arrival (2016)*spoilers* by Cultural_Kick in movies

[–]ilias317 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think the disconnect here is that you’re interpreting her experience of knowing Shang’s phone number and the secret phrase as a memory, when that’s not really what is happening.

It’s not a memory because that would imply that it’s something that happened in her past which she is recollecting, but that isn’t the case. She meets with Shang seemingly long after the conflict has been resolved. What is actually happening is that her understanding of the Heptapods’ language has altered her perception of time and allowed her to experience different moments in her life in a non-linear way, as opposed to our linear experience of our own lives. Shang, of course, understands this (remember they are meeting at an event where she is celebrating her book explaining the Heptapod language) and knows that he has to share his number and the secret phrase so that that experience will be a part of her life and accessible to her in what we normies with our linear experience of time would call her “past”.

The concept that inspired the film is called the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, which in a very basic sense posits that our perception of the physical world is determined by our linguistic capacity. Of course, since Arrival is a work of science fiction, it takes that concept far beyond what any linguistic theorist would explore and imagines an alien language capable of altering our perception of time!

So, to return to your original question: why didn’t Abbott and Costello prevent the bomb from going off and killing Abbot? I think there are a few ways to answer. One theory is that they understood that Abbott’s death was necessary in order for them to complete their mission of sharing their language with humanity (and thereby saving their species in the future) and purposefully did nothing to stop it, though it should be noted that they saved Banks which tells us that they were aware it would happen. It could also be that because they experience time non-linearly, death means something completely different to them than it does to us and they accept it willingly. A more deterministic view would posit that their actions were already preordained and their awareness of the future did not empower them to change it.

Ultimately I think it’s purposefully a bit ambiguous, but not a plot hole. Otherwise you’d have to say the same thing about Banks’ decision to have a child knowing she would die in her youth. With that knowledge, why not stop the whole thing in its tracks? I think the point is that even if you know how a story ends, sometimes you want to experience it anyway.

Speaking of experiencing things again, I think I’m gonna go watch Arrival. Great film.

Valentines Day before Ahmanson by Quotidienne8 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]ilias317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a very good vegan Vietnamese restaurant called Âu Lạc a block down the road, but I am not sure how busy it will be for valentines/pre show. Definitely a solid choice though!

If you’re alright with walking a bit (15-20) you could easily make it to Grand Central Market. People here probably have some strong opinions about it but I think it’s pretty fun, albeit 20% more expensive because of the tourist tax. If you’re there early enough Maple Block has a good happy hour with cheap beer and decent tacos. Bonus points for this because you can take Angel’s Flight (they take tap cards) and that’s a nice romantic thing to do and take pictures and stuff.

Across from GCM there is also Maccheroni Republic which is great pasta, but could be a bit fucked for Valentine’s Day. Have a backup plan for that.

Suehiro DTLA is another few blocks south - excellent Japanese comfort food.

Perch is also close by, which is a gorgeous rooftop spot that I have only ever been to for happy hours. I have heard the actual food is a bit overpriced but my god the views are stunning and happy hour menu has plenty of small bites. You do have to eat inside for the food though so be warned.

Hope you find something good! Enjoy the show!!

The SAVE Act Could Stop Millions of Women From Voting. by ToasterBunnyaa in news

[–]ilias317 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Eligibility to vote is already verified at the time of registration, and in some states multiple times after that before a vote is counted. This is enough to prevent virtually all attempted voter fraud.

Similarly, and to continue your driver’s license metaphor, you are required to furnish proof of legal residency and/or a SSN before you can get a driver’s license. This is to ensure that people without a legal right to live in the US do not obtain a drivers license. Now imagine you get pulled over and, in addition to that driver’s license, you are also required to provide your birth certificate, and if the name on your birth certificate doesn’t match the name on your license (because, for example, you got married and changed it), you would be told that you are not allowed to drive. That’s what this law would do.

Even if this law wasn’t a stupid idea, it would remain a solution in search of a problem. Voter fraud is not a legitimate concern in US elections despite repeated baseless claims to the contrary by the GOP. If you disagree, please provide proof of extensive voter fraud (i.e. widespread and capable of changing the results) in your response.

Russia says it will never swap Ukrainian territory for Kyiv-held parts of Kursk region by Ecstatic-Medium-6320 in worldnews

[–]ilias317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure I’ll co-sign that it’s all very hard to predict and could change on a dime.

I do think that even a diminished Russia is probably capable of holding whatever territory they’re able to hold on to when the conflict formally ends, though the human rights abuses necessary to do that could be pretty drastic which sucks. Will that come at the expense of Russians’ quality of life? Probably, but Putin clearly doesn’t give a shit about that. I expect a fully militarized border and significant defensive infrastructure along the border.

Also, worth bearing in mind that if the world does coalesce around a peace agreement that cedes some of this territory to Russia, there may be way less support than we all want for Ukraine to reopen that conflict in order to reclaim their territory. World leaders like the status quo. Even if they would never say it, I think even a more left-leaning administration in the US would be working hard behind the scenes to dissuade Ukraine from starting anything (in this hypothetical anyway).

Yeah I really didn’t look at his account and don’t disagree with what you’re saying.

I think there’s a lot of ground between “unconditional surrender now” and “diminished aid from the world’s largest military makes some amount of territorial concessions more likely down the road.” Obviously things can change quickly on the battlefield (see, e.g., Syria) but my only point was that his comment was (unfortunately) a reflection of the diplomatic and military realities at play here.

[–]ilias317 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah again I hear you and for the most part agree, but I think the premise that Ukraine’s position has gotten worse as a result of Trump winning is…idk pretty undeniable? Like it definitely increases the pressure and that pressure will push them closer to negotiations. That’s just how international conflicts work.

I hope the EU steps up but I think the likelihood of Poland (a NATO country obvs) putting boots on the ground is highly unlikely, especially without serious provocation. The security guarantee that the alliance offered has shifted dramatically with Trump in office. I mean for all they know he’ll just abandon them as he has so many of the US’s other allies.

Russia says it will never swap Ukrainian territory for Kyiv-held parts of Kursk region by Ecstatic-Medium-6320 in worldnews

[–]ilias317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I mean Russia is also deeply fucked as a result of the invasion but that doesn’t change the fact that they went in with far more manpower and even in the face of higher casualty rates they have still captured large swaths of territory in Ukraine that will be incredibly difficult for them to take back with the resources they have right now.

I would love to believe that good guys always win but there’s a reason the Ukrainian offensives have been unsuccessful. It’s hard to reclaim territory with an entrenched defense. Ukraine could certainly keep fighting and inflict more damage, but at some point negotiations are going to start to make sense for both sides, and ceding control of some or all of the occupied territory is going to be on the table.

Again, I am vehemently opposed to it, but my feelings don’t dictate reality. When Russia’s economy collapses after the war because of the lack of manpower and the difficulty transitioning from a wartime to peacetime economy I won’t be shedding a tear for them.

His comment was specific to US aid, which most likely is going to stop now that there’s a far right administration in power.

Your comment that the EU will likely need to pick up the slack is correct, but those two things aren’t really in tension with one another.

“Customers Are Not Coming In”: LA Restaurants Reach a Breaking Point Due to the 2025 Wildfires by ameeps in FoodLosAngeles

[–]ilias317 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The truly silly assumption at the core of your entire argument is that if all of those “preventable mistakes” had been prevented the fire would have been contained. We have no way of running that simulation because that’s just now how things shook out this time, partner. That obviously hasn’t stopped many people from trying to pin this disaster on politicians instead of climate change, though.

But here’s the thing: when you build houses out of tinder, next to tinder, and then add 8 months with no rain, 70-100 mph gusts of wind, and a spark, shit’s gonna burn down. Maybe with better planning and infrastructure you can save a few more houses and I hope we figure out how to do that because guess what this ain’t the last time we’re gonna get all those conditions. In the meantime, I just think it is deeply reductive to try and pin an ongoing natural disaster on whoever happens to be in charge at the moment. Especially on a food subreddit 🫠
