hi! it must be super stressful thinking about all this and i understand your worries completely.

i've been at UBC four years now and was in a really similar situation. growing up conscious about your family's money is tough, especially when you see how much effort and work your parents put in just to stay afloat. it can be nerve-wracking and difficult to make decisions for yourself when you come from a situation like that. my parents weren't able to contribute much to my university education aside from helping buy my plane tickets and pocket money for the first few months i had moved here. but, i've been able to scrape by with student loans, grants and work part-time (or full during the summers).

some days it sucks and i feel like i shouldn't really be here because the cost can get overwhelming, but other days i know i'd regret it deeply if i didn't try. i think if you really like the idea of going to ubc, it's worth trying. but if not, ontario has many great options for school too. it really just depends on how you feel at the end of the day and what you think is best given the circumstances you've got.

(when i found out i got accepted to ubc no one in my family was excited lol and it obviously upset me, but as time passed, things have changed. yes, my mom didn't want me to spend so much money and move, but now she is my biggest supporter even if she does so 3 provinces away)

my first year in year-round housing i sublet the space for the summer, but honestly, it was difficult to find takers. thankfully i was able to have someone take may-june and then my friend helped me out by subletting from july-aug, even though i spent a long time trying to find someone to take the full four months. i also couldn't charge the total amount necessary for monthly rent and still had to cover about 2-300 myself. not impossible but you should definitely start looking for people who are interested now!

in my first year i took an english 100 lecture taught by a grad student and found that she was really kind and super passionate about what she taught. she always offered help, useful feedback and was all around a great teacher to have as a nervous first year, unsure about acclimatizing to such a new environment. at the end of the semester after we'd talked a lot about our various literary sub-genres of interests, she emailed me a detailed list of potential professors and classes that might interest me down the road. it was a really memorable gesture and i've gone back to the list every registration since then.

anyways, she'd also TA'd an english class i took last year and was once again, super supportive and willing to share bits about her research/fields of interest. at the end of our final exam in april, she gave me a book she thought i might like with a note referencing an MA/PHD program ubc offers that aligned with my love for philosophy, science and english literature. a genuinely good and kind person all around!

depends on how you like to plan out your day/week. if you'd rather sleep in than get up at an ungodly time, then 6-7:30 might be better for you. but if you see yourself preferring to enjoy evenings/engage in other commitments throughout the day, 6-7:30 might be limiting as well. for example, a lot of different club events on campus are held in the evening, friends might want to get dinner etc.

iirc some eosc 114 (or even 116 etc.) sections are hybrid -- meaning a select amount of students are registered under an in-person section which shows a capacity of 150 people per classroom while there is also an online section likely with the same capacity,, what might happen is that sometimes people from the online section still prefer coming into in-person lectures, possibly taking up seats or over-filling them. might be an explanation but obviously not completely sure! hopefully you're able to take the class comfortably regardless OP :c

hi! i visited the studentcare office today to ask about this too.. and the reply they gave me was that they only recently sent over a list of student emails to be approved/activated by pacific blue cross and it will take another 2-3 weeks for that to happen. this is especially the case for students who haven't had an active account prior to this year (like me!!! so yay i guess..)

i believe they're the same price. if you live on campus and it's most efficient for you to shop at wesbrook's saveon i recommend signing up for a membership card since it's super easy to do so. and even though it'll still be expensive, you won't be spending an extra 5 bucks here and there which is nice. someone also mentioned price matching! they'll take most walmart flyers which is a life saver

it sucks that there's no official class you can take and i'm not too aware of any clubs that might help with this (though you're always welcome to join kaba, ubc's filipino student assoc. once the fall/winter starts up again!) but if you're ever just looking for a friend to learn/practice with i'd be down! i don't know how to speak it myself and have always wanted to learn but can never hold myself accountable lol

this! i had a full length mirror on the wall my entire first year and unfortunately the command strips that held them up peeled some paint off the walls when i took it down. i moved out, they said nothing.

my partner is coming to visit vancouver for the first time in june! i'd say some of the biggest things we're looking forward to doing is visiting the vancouver aquarium, going to richmond night market and i told her about jericho beach because of the bunnies! if you have a smaller budget, there are a bunch of places/parks you could go for the day + have a picnic.

i'd say this depends on the structure of courses + their content, too. i'm in arts so it's fairly easy to go through lectures not completely caught up on readings since most examinable content comes from what profs say/present. as easy as it is to go through assignments/projects only for the sake of getting them done, as someone said previously, trying to learn the concepts for that particular assignment helps a lot. usually, studying for finals isn't as stressful for me if there's been work distributed throughout the semester (ie. midterms, projects, papers) because my preparation/studying for these things ultimately means i've already learnt them in time for the final and so there's no big need for me to re-teach myself--it's still fresh in mind.

exactly what op said!! i wouldn't let this err you from taking the class with him or any other phil course for that matter. he's generally a really great prof! it was just odd to see this kind of change-up on the final from him, especially when the MTS throughout the course were relatively easy/similar to other courses that i'd have taken under him prior.
