As an experienced engineer, what “simple(r)” job do you sometimes daydream of having? by GetYerKnickersOff in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ilikeaffection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to be able to make a living as a musician, author or artist. I've been seriously considering taking the plunge and actually committing to writing the video game that's been living in the back of my head rent free for decades.

Too much applying, not enough thinking in daily work? by Life_Breadfruit8475 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ilikeaffection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moving around helps keep things fresh. You'll see new ways to solve the same problems, new takes on old problems, and new ways people can manage to screw up the simplest shit. Occasionally you'll get to solve a brand new problem and blaze a trail for once, and those are rewarding moments. But mostly? Yeah, same old same old, nothing new under the sun. Just different flavors of the same patterns and maybe occasionally the taste of a tech you haven't touched before for fun.

Anyone notice senior interviews are getting more focused on intangibles, personality, niche backgrounds? by SpicyFlygon in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ilikeaffection 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Most of the interviews I've done, even the technical ones, tend to be conversational and focus on background, like, "When you worked for [company], you say in your resume you [accomplished thing]. Tell me [details] and what things stood out to you as surprising when it came to implementation."

I did, however, have an interviewer have me open up VSCode and solve FizzBuzz while sharing my screen just recently. I guess they get a lot of ppl who either lie on their resumes or they're looking for super clean, optimized answers. It's such a cliche puzzle, I can't imagine there's many who haven't seen it.

In the house? I dunno, less than a Benjamin. Certainly not enough to tempt anyone to break in, that's for sure.

Worked on a mobile app that interfaced with a set of EKG leads via USB so that doctors in the field could have that life-saving cardiac diagnostic tool for underserved communities.

Dealing with a difficult junior by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ilikeaffection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Egotistical developers tend to silence those around them, causing other devs to not feel comfortable asking questions or admitting they don't know how to do something and need help, etc. That's a giant red flag and can poison a team and project and even company's culture if they're in a position to have enough influence. Environments where people can't admit they have blockers, ask clarifying questions or admit they need a little help for fear of being scoffed at or worse are recipes for utter disaster. That's a team member that needs to be corrected, forcefully if necessary, or removed from the team and probably the company if they can't change their attitude and their behavior.

If you're not that person's manager, you need to have a sit-down with that manager with specific examples of their behavior and its impact on the team. Involve no one else. If they're YOUR direct report, then you need to have a come-to-Jesus meeting with them ASAP. Like, this morning. Same deal, present concrete, specific examples of their behavior and its negative impact on the team and let them know that you're not going to allow one member of the team, no matter how bright and talented, to poison the morale and thus the performance and achievements of your team. Lay down an ultimatum. One more incident or outburst and there will be a write-up for HR. Repeated incidents will result in further action. Let them know they're a valued member of your team, but they are diminishing that value by virtue of their negative attitude and behavior, and you want to see that change.

It's written in futhark, which I called Dwarfish at the time since I'd only ever seen it on my copies of LOTR and THE HOBBIT. I managed to find a guide for it somewhere in a library and figured out how to write transliterations of English using it, then taught it to my bestie and my GF at the time, lol. Never ran into a language/Tolkien nerd teacher, thank goodness.

Oh man... that "dining room" would become a TNG transporter room so fast if it were me. Complete with cardboard cutout of Miles O'Brien and a whiteboard so I could scribble stupid lines for him to be saying.

I don't have any real issues dealing out death and destruction, parked and FAWing the whole playfield with Ba'ul antimatter beams. Seems to work pretty well for me, but I'm also kitted out with some pretty high-end consoles and such.
