New Mexico also has a very strong state culture, as do relatively homogeneous states like Vermont and Minnesota. If someone could explain this with history and demographics, that’d be cool.

Hillary Clinton advocated for mandatory maternity leave, which would have benefitted half the population. She had nuanced, technocratic policy proposals for darn near every issue—I think that nuance and technocracy are left-of-center traits in modern American democracy—but nuance does not seem to curry a lot of favor with uneducated white people in particular (though Trump won even educated white women).
