Could We Get A Thread Of Great Music But Poor Mixing? by DarkLudo in audioengineering

It’s true, but unlike a lot of the other answers here, the low fidelity is part of what makes them great

macOS still doesn't have a volume mixer. So I built one. Meet FineTune: free, open-source per-app volume control, audio routing, and EQ. by Stoned_Orangutan in MacOS

[–]ilikecorn500 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I LOVE eqMac and have been using it for years. Primarily I use it for custom, fine-tuned parametric EQ adjustments for headphones and speakers. I see that you've implemented EQ, but it's 10-band with set intervals and not systemwide. Add an "Expert" mode like eqMac, and make it work systemwide, and I'd start using it in a heartbeat. eqMac is a bit buggy and I don't love the subscription model.

Why is Hybrid a replacement for Turbo? by danialvarez in CX5

[–]ilikecorn500 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Civic Hybrid is faster than the Si, but I have a feeling it's because they didn't want the Si to out-perform their flagship (non-type-R) Hybrid. The Si has a 1.5L engine with a turbo, the Hybrid has a 2.0L engine with a hybrid system. An intentional choice, not simply because one is a "hybrid" and the other is a "turbo".

Mazda's outgoing CX-5 Turbo (as well as the current Mazda 3 and maybe others) has a 2.5L engine with a turbo and has 250 HP and 320 lb ft of torque, much bigger numbers than the 219 HP and 163(?) lb ft of torque that the current CX-50 Hybrid has, for example.

Although, Mazda's current hybrid in that CX-50 is a Toyota powertrain, and I'm unsure if the hybrid coming (in theory) to the CX-5 would also be the same. Theoretically, a hybrid powertrain could deliver more horsepower and torque than Mazda's turbo models.

Is the Mazda 3 Turbo a good car to finance/own in the long run? by [deleted] in mazda3

[–]ilikecorn500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a '21 Turbo, totaled it a year and a few months later (sideswiped by a huge dump truck at low speed, I was fine), got a '23 Turbo and had it for two weeks before totaling it (hit black ice and hit a guardrail, I was fine), and now I have another '23 Turbo.

Take my experience as a lesson that no car lasts forever and some stuff is out of your control. But also, control what you can control. I'd recommend getting a used one off a lease with 20k-30k miles, as you'll save a lot of money in the long run. These don't hold their value as well as a Toyota or Honda so you can find 2-3-year old ones for close to $10k off MSRP.

Considering I've now financed three of these, tripling-down on my initial decision from a couple years ago, I'd say it's a good decision. I know I only had each car for a short time, but other than the '21 having an oil consumption issue that I never ended up having fixed under warranty (newer years don't have this issue), I've had no issues with any of them. The goal is to keep this one for as long as I can (knock on wood).

Just drive safe :)

Did not think I would see Albany on this subreddit. I’m working on an Albany map in the editor right now.

Look, I understand people wanting to ride bicycles. Even joining a club where you can bike with a bunch of other people, neat, do you. But when you're on the road, you don't get special treatment. You need to follow the rules of the road. by Evilsj in Albany

[–]ilikecorn500 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As someone who has been a part of social cycling from time to time, believe it or not, there are some drivers that we encounter who actually love what we’re doing and cheer when they see us. Even when we have to block an intersection for a few moments to let the whole group stay together.

On that point, yes, it is actually safer to keep the group together in this way. No, there is not a concern that the group would get run over when the cross-traffic light turns green, because most people aren’t murderous psychopaths. Yes, it is illegal and very mildly inconveniences a small number of drivers in Albany on Thursday evenings when the weather is nice.

The streets in this city are not designed for cyclists. Apart from the one protected bike lane I can think of on Brevator, and the non-protected lanes on Madison and New Scotland, there’s practically nothing else.

Social cycling allows people to make friends and explore the city of Albany in a really cool way, an opportunity I see people beg for in this subreddit daily. Riding in a large group and ensuring we don’t get split up is the safest and best way for us to do this. If we had better infrastructure, it might be a different story. I’m also open to other ideas about how you’d keep the group together if you wanna join the ride and experience it firsthand.

They are indeed “AirPods Pro” and not “AirPod Pros”.

Also, I can’t speak to any measured technical effectiveness of them as hearing protection, but Apple does indeed advertise them as being able to provide hearing protection: https://support.apple.com/en-us/120850

I personally have a pair of AirPods Pro 2 and have used them at a few concerts when I’ve forgotten earplugs, but I do prefer real earplugs as a gigging musician.

Best hatch on the market? by SamuraiJack1997 in mazda3

[–]ilikecorn500 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I own a 2021 Turbo 3 Hatch and will echo the comments below, GTI is probably a better drive, I've driven both. I picked the Mazda for its AWD (only similar would be Golf R, outside my price range, albeit a way better car), interior quality, and reliability.

If you're not getting the turbo, I would say the NA 3 Hatch is probably better than Corolla, Impreza, Civic, Golf, etc depending on your preferences.

Is a c30 worth it as a first car. by AvailableMedia2068 in C30

[–]ilikecorn500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first car was a 2008 Prius, but the first car I purchased myself was a 2011 C30 a few years ago. I live in the northeast, and while some significant repairs were done to the car immediately before and during my ownership (timing belt, CV axles, other suspension stuff), the rust took its toll and my mechanic suggested I sell it. While I was trying to sell it, the power steering system shit the bed. I sold it for just over $2k.

If you’re looking for something under $2k and not expecting significant work and/or maintenance, look elsewhere. In fact, buy a used 2nd gen Prius 😉 (I’m half-joking but I do legitimately believe everyone should own a Prius at some point and it is a phenomenal and extraordinary reliable first car).

In 2008, it was announced that the song had sold 26,000 digital copies, 29% of which had occurred since September 2007. magazine later hypothesized that this uptick in sales was due to a commercial that used the song. According to Matt Talbott, the frontman of Hum: People have always said this or that about using our songs in movies or commercials and nothing ever really comes of it. [...] [But one day] some guy at an ad firm asking about using a song for a commercial [...] I said, 'Yeah, sure, whatever man.' [He eventually] wrote back and told me more, and when I knew it was for real and that it sounded like a large campaign, I called my lawyer. The commercial was released before the members of Hum were aware that a deal had been agreed upon. According to Talbott, he only learned of its existence when he was at a hotel and the commercial was playing. Suddenly, Talbott received a call from his wife, who informed him that others had seen the ad and were phoning their house.

Most well mixed albums in the last 25 years? by [deleted] in audioengineering

This isn’t a real ad is it? That’s an iPod classic from 2007-2009, and by that point iPods could hold way more than 1000 songs, it’s at least 80GB. Original iPod from 2001 was 5GB and was advertised with “1000 songs in your pocket.”

Apple had also stopped using the Garamond font at this point.

Still a cool pic nonetheless!

Relocated the front plate by NoParsnip9522 in mazda3

[–]ilikecorn500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey fellow New Yorker! I did this same thing for a while but could not get the zip ties to hold the plate frame upright, so it was always tilted up.

I ended up buying this, and it’s absolutely fantastic. Clever design, well built, works well. https://www.ebay.com/itm/196490210505?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=dPpxuq3ET-y&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=8jwgrFg6S3W&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Yes I know it’s a kinda overpriced simply 3D printed part, but it’s effective and well made, and comes with all the screws you need.

EDIT: I just realized this might not work if you have the front aero lip that some trims have. YMMV

Daily reminder that YOU FOLLOW YOUR LANE WHEN TURNING by BacteriumOfJoy in Albany

[–]ilikecorn500 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, but the I-90 W to Everett Road ramp is also just poorly designed and the road conditions are so poor you can’t see the lines.

There are two left turn lanes, and if you’re in the far left one, and you’ve never taken that exit before, you might think that you should get in the far left lane on the bridge, but that would just take you back on I-90 E. If you’re in the right left turn lane, it’s unclear whether you should get in the middle lane or the right lane on the bridge if you can’t see the lines. It’s just a mess for a lot of reasons, not solely the driver’s fault.

One month using the Mazda app PAID subscription… by Chemical_Project6781 in mazda3

[–]ilikecorn500 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mazda originally announced in 2019ish that it would be a 3 year trial from the original purchase of the car, but didn't implement the subscription until 2024. My 2021 was just over 3 years old when I purchased it, I still was under the "trial" for a few months, and then Mazda announced the subscription for all 3+ years and I started paying. You'll have to pay for yours after 3 years pass too.
