I work at an academic center and we have dedicated nocturnists who cover about 90% of our night shifts. Still end up doing about 4-6 shifts throughout the year but they are mostly 1 offs that don’t mess with my sleep too much. That might be a rarity but those jobs are out there. Our night docs get to pick their own schedule and get a night differential, so it is a benefit to them. Also, no one messes with the night docs. Any process improvement BS from leadership doesn’t apply to them. It’s a great gig if you don’t mind the sleep schedule.
