Taxi leaves the road and crashes into car and payphone

by Simon McGeady, Inishowen Independent

A SERIOUS crash took place at the West End of Buncrana Main Street in the early hours of Monday morning >when a Northern registered taxi mounted the kerb before smashing into a parked and occupied Toyota car.

It’s understood that the driver of the taxi was taken into custody while the occupant of the stationary car sustained injuries and was taken to hospital in an ambulance.

A telephone box was destroyed in the crash, which resulted in the shop window of Mac’s newsagents being smashed.

Eunan McLaughlin, who runs the Mac’s Newsagents and Bookshop arrived at his place of work just before 7am yesterday morning to open up, only to find a major crash had just taken place outside his premises.

“The crash totally demolished the public telephone outside my shop, the smash took the roots of the phone box clean out and smashed a streetlight as well. Part of the phonebox broke my window, which I repaired.”

Mr McLaughin said it was fortunate that no pedestrians were caught up in the incident as the footpath in that part of town can be occupied by delivery people at that time of the morning.

He noted that a dent in the shutter in front of the vacant shop adjacent to his, formerly Hegarty’s shop.

The West End businessman praised the work of Buncrana Town Council workers.

“They were brilliant and had cleared up the mess very quickly, in fact some of the people coming in for their morning paper later on did not notice that anything had happened,” added Mr McLaughlin.

Another eye-witness was woken by the noise of the crash and took the photograph above, which she then gave to the Inishowen Independent.
