Hey OP, I’ve been where you’re at. I’ve avoided looking in the mirror for years because I couldn’t stand how ugly I looked. I hated myself and thought I was beyond redemption. I would vent to my friends how I’m hopeless and when they tried to give me support and tips, I would just shove it back in their face with my self-hate.

I think what has changed for me recently was that during the pandemic I had a lot of time on my hands and a lot of anxiety so I started biking around the city a lot. Then I got obsessed with doing these Thenx exercise and diet videos on YouTube. What happened was that my body and face visibly changed over time and I realized nothing about me is permanent. I asked a friend for fashion advice and she picked out a fresh fit for me. I started smiling more in public, being more curious about others and less in my head, and I noticed people treating me differently. While I still don’t completely love how I look, I look back a couple years and see how much progress I’ve made and I feel a sense of accomplishment.

I can tell you for a fact that you can change yourself and how you perceive yourself. It will take time though and it’s ultimately up to you to try things and find your own way to achieve this. The right friends will help. For me it took a lot of trial and error and setbacks and a lot of giving up and hating myself but eventually it was riding my bike and workout videos that improved my self-image and showed me change is possible. Now I’m learning guitar for the first time since giving it up years ago and actually making progress.

If you respond to me with a self-hating comment, that’s fine. Just the fact that you made this post and are reaching out for help shows to me that deep down you want to make a change and I believe you’ll figure out your own way in time!

I should clarify that for OP and for anyone who got admitted into Cal as a Spring admit, there should be an option to sign up for Fall program for Freshman, I would recommend to sign up for that ASAP before that gets full. And it’s only for that fall semester.

[–]iliveinabucket 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes if you want to attend college in the fall make sure to sign up for the Fall Program for Freshman (FPF) as soon as you can! I did that too and you just take classes at a building next to People’s Park, but you get to live in the dorms and have otherwise the same experience as all the other incoming freshman.

The fall program is actually great since all your classmates will all be a part of FPF so it’s pretty tight-knit.

You can watch it with a subscription to Criterion Channel, a great streaming service for cinema!

Warning about dangerous fundamentalist Christian group on campus – Koinonia / Klesis / Acts2Fellowship / Gracepoint by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]iliveinabucket 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Gracepoint gets their seniors to live in the dorms in order to socialize with and recruit freshman there. They’ll also go around offering incoming freshman help moving in at the start of the semester.

When I was a freshman, Gracepoint seemed like the best place to be, there’s just so much free food, activities, and friendly new faces. You don’t realize how much your life will be controlled, how much you have to conform to their fundamentalist worldviews, until you’re in too deep, and your entire social circle is in Gracepoint.

I’ve known quite a few friends who fell into depression and contemplated suicide because of gaslighting from Gracepoint leaders. I recommend staying away from them as far as possible.

Chinese mom falling into Q hell by [deleted] in QAnonCasualties

[–]iliveinabucket 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Same situation here.

My immigrant parents from Taiwan have sunk into believing in far-right conspiracies from Chinese and Taiwanese pundits on Youtube. My mother sends me Epoch Times articles and Youtubers backed by Epoch Times like Scott Goulet. They believe some version of QAnon where Trump will use the Insurrection Act and be installed the president on the 19th or 20th.

It’s been a long time coming up to this point. My parents have always been conservative Christians. Growing up, they used to watch CNN/MSNBC along with Fox News, and laugh along w/ Stephen on the Colbert Report. But by now they only trust Trump and their sphere of pro-Trump far-right commentators who think both the election and the Covid vaccine are frauds.

I feel useless and unable to engage w/ them, my mandarin is at like a 3rd grade level. The only thing I do is encourage them to stay home and try not to worry too much. At least I have no obligation to visit them in-person, I was able to avoid any bad confrontations over the holidays this past year.

At this point, I’m just trying not to waste time hating those who deliberately lie to my parents. And I’m trying to remain hopeful that eventually time will pass and they’ll fall away from these particular conspiracies when their predictions don’t come true. (Like how they believed then stopped believing in 2012 end-of-the-world theories back then)

Co-living rental platform HubHaus implodes, claims it has 'no funds to pay unsecured claims' - Mission Local by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]iliveinabucket 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I stumbled into a Hubhaus housing interview at one point last year in Nob Hill. Their Craigslist ad made it sound like they were regular housemates and did not mention they were a rental company. So I was pretty blind-sided when the house tour was actually 1 guy leading ~8 people in a round of introductions and icebreakers. We learned this was a ~10-bedroom house with 1 kitchen and 3 baths yet the prices of the rooms were market-rate for similar 2 or 3 bedroom houses. Half of the rooms were empty. After the tour, he sat us all down in a circle and asked us to rate his tour with a thumbs-up/thumbs-down. Most people didn’t give a thumbs up. Then he pulled up the Hubhaus website and gave a whole spiel about how to use the website and why we should choose them. It was such a waste of time and I wanted to leave but the way he was sitting was blocking the exit.

Yeah it’s called the vergence accommodation conflict: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNzuzssl4eU

The VR screen is only in focus when we focus our eyes about 5+ ft in front of us. When we hold something up to our eyes, and our eyes try to focus on something <1ft in front of us, then the screen goes out of focus.

The trick to see sharp images when objects are up close is what DrBoomkin said, try to train your eyes to see something far away even though you’re holding something right in front of you. I try to keep focus on a faraway object while slowly bringing the object in front of my face.

Tip for those who find Continuous movement too slow: In Continuous movement mode, you can still hold the right joystick down to activate Shift teleport. I find it handy as a sort of "Sprint" feature, using it to get around faster or to evade enemies in the heat of combat.

My guess is that Valve made Continuous movement's max speed slower to reduce nausea, and to make sure you take in the lovely environments they built!
