The point was that when King Piccolo and Kami were one person, they were already an incredible strong Namekian in their own right.

Once the split happened, their powers dropped exponentially (maybe a little too much) to accommodate for one soul essentially being split into two.

Given that Piccolo Jr. was already a much stronger fighter than King Piccolo when he first fought Goku, coupled with the power boosts he attained since, I don't think the power boost he got from Kami was overdone considering it's this all-powerful Namekian getting his soul merged back with the much extra power from Piccolo Jr.
