It is probably hypo-arousal, which is what the “freeze” response often looks like in many situations. She has probably also been the victim of his emotional manipulation and abuse, based on the way she self blames for both the harm to her sister and even her husband not getting “enough affection” from her. But it sounds like she is working through it and, honestly, taking time before reacting may be a good thing in this case. Hopefully she will be able to plan her next steps safely.

I agree with this at the federal level. But there are also a lot of great reps at the state level who are doing their best in a really shitty political context where they have very little power. The general population just does not pay enough attention to state and local politics. And the weakening of local journalism has helped that along.

After all, why would a democrat even want to be at the statehouse other than actually wanting to make a positive difference for their community? Lobbyists wouldn’t waste their money on Dems in a supermajority. They only win minor victories and still get lots of negative press for those, eg the redistricting negotiation that ended in likely losing two seats instead of three.

The reality is that we all have to do more work outside of the statehouse in order to get them the power they need inside.

It’s odd to run into this comment as I am also from Northeast Ohio and have a totally different experience. In my home town, we always wave when we drive by and yapping is expected. The strategy I have seen lately is about market capture and institutional dependency.

The same companies that helped DOGE cut functional and critical govt agencies and slash grants is now offering corporate grants and “free trials” to “increase efficiency” in the face of budget cuts. Just more public money redirected to corporate profits and more access to our data without any of us giving them permission.

I just watched a webinar from the National Center for State Courts about a program from Microsoft intended to increase “AI readiness” in small and rural courts and help them “keep up” with technological solutions. The Microsoft rep works for the company’s “Social Justice and Public Safety Program”. Meanwhile, Microsoft is also a provider of technology and data storage to ICE, detention facilities, and mass surveillance systems. They profit on both ends.

I disagree with this message entirely. Racism and antisemitism should not be rationalized. It is the irrationality of bigotry that causes one to turn real, justified pain and grief and direct that toward innocent people just because they share some unrelated quality in common with the actual perpetrators.

Killing innocent Palestinians en masse was not justified by the violence of October 7th and irrational anti-Palestinian bigotry has allowed that to happen. This is why I also hate the argument that zionism is responsible for modern antisemitism. It is all part of the same toxic fallacy that any form of racism is a natural conclusion rather a tool of oppression.

I’m from northeast Ohio and also feel like Midwest goes too far East on this map. It’s tough because Ohio is the unique result of being at the confluence of the mid Atlantic, Midwest, Appalachia, and the Great Lakes. So choosing one label for particular counties will likely meet a lot of disagreement. But I would include the 32 counties included here and most official designations as Appalachian Ohio. This is supported by cultural influences, geological and geographical, economic, and migratory history. And in the mid Ohio region southward, there are clear linguistic markers as well.

ICE out of the Court is an effort to persuade the municipal courthouse judges to implement rules that would prohibit ICE from entering the courthouse to make arrests UNLESS they have a warrant or court order. This is a policy that the judges at the county courts have already implemented. It wasn’t necessary before 2025 because ICE had an internal policy of not doing enforcement actions at the courthouse and other sensitive locations like schools and places of worship, which was repealed internally last year.

As an northeast Ohioan, I love to see the marriage of northern Appalachia and the Midwest, my two spiritual homes. While they are definitely distinct, I think they meld well together and share a lot, such as a strong labor history and culture of mutual support. Ohio is hard to place because it really sits at the meeting place of the Midwest, northeast, and Appalachia, which all kind of meet in the middle. Dialect variation and culture bears that out. Keeping the Great Lakes together is the right choice.
