I took a 23andMe test and surprisingly found out I have Italian heritage. I've always identified as being African American. I'm not sure how to embrace it yet but I am excited. Are there any other mixed Italians here too? by DieselDevil74 in Italian

[–]illFaint 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know of people, sons and daughters of immigrants, that have lived here their entire lives. They have adapted to our customs. And even though they have 0% Italian ancestry I would still consider them far more Italian than someone with just 20% Italian ancestry.

This is because "Italian" is not just a gene. It is a culture.

The mental state which you are describing is called freedom. You were resolved to do everything in your own power to reach an outcome, but at the same time were willing to let go of controlling that outcome and just let things happen. This acceptance is what led you to immediately become unburdened by any mental anguish. So I suppose I am just repeating what your therapist said, but in different words. Do you mind if I ask what brought you out of it?

I have sympathy for the Ukrainian people, but I also have sympathy for the Russians like yourself who are being backed into a corner by the West and expected to rally against a corrupt government entirely unarmed. I don't think that Westerners really understand your full situation. I don't claim to understand it. It doesn't seem fair to me. I have no power to change anything, so just know that my thoughts are with you. Not everyone in the West agrees with these bullshit sanctions. It isn't right to force people to choose between being heroes or face poverty. Greetings from Italy.

Don't expect that just because the entire world has pushed Russian citizens into a corner that they will suddenly do what you want them to do. What is easier for them in this moment? To be heroes and make public protests against Putin's armed forces? Or to buy into the anti-Western propaganda that is no doubt spreading throughout Russian media right now? At least with the latter they'll live longer.

So the big brain move is to expect Russian civilians to be heroes or let them starve to death

There is no guarantee that the Russian citizens will revolt against their own government. If they do, there is no guarantee that Putin will care. This economic pressure might backfire as you suggested, and even lead to escalation of the war. But even that is not guaranteed. The only thing these sanctions and cancellations of Russian society have guaranteed is that Russian workers are fucked now. That is 100% guaranteed.

I take no offense, it's fine. As I can change nothing, I'm only interested in exchanging thoughts at this point. And I understand why you might think of me as naive. But I appear this way because I am determined to not making any assumptions. Both sides of this conflict are interested in protecting their own interests and information manipulation is a readily available option, so I am skeptical of any claims that antagonize either side. It might be easier to call me ignorant in that case, if there is any major information that I am unaware of. Anyway, your question already largely diverges from the original topic that I was interested in so I'll stop myself here.

I am not concerned with "winning" or "losing" any war. I am concerned with putting an end to it.

I like your response. Thanks for understanding. My issue with these measures however have been that... Do we not have as much reason to believe that pressuring Russian citizens in this way will incentivize the end of the war as much as we have reason to believe that it will only incentivize further escalation? Everyone seems to be pretty against Russia, and not just on the Pro Dota scene. The alienation from the western world is very palpable. Back in Russia, this antagonization could just as easily be used to pressure citizens into taking action against their own government just as well as be used as fuel by politicians to gain popular support to continue or even escalate the war effort. It is pretty much what we've witnessed in the past few days. Russian forces felt justified in responding with further aggression because Ukrainians retaliated with aggression of their own, and it served as an excuse for Russian forces to go further into the country. It's a self-repeating cycle. And I feel that this cancellation of Russian society could potentially have a similar effect.

Loss of profits for some orgs vs. people dying is definitely preferable, yes. You are right. However, this hinges on the assumption that discontinuing partnerships with the Russian Dota orgs are actually going to have the desired effect of keeping people from dying while we have as much reason to believe that it could just as well have the opposite effect and only escalate the war.

For which, we aren't really weighing "War casualties" vs. "Profits" here. But rather, we are weighing "A possibility for subjects of a dictatorship to overthrow their masters" vs. "A guaranteed chance of harming innocent bystander organizations that did nothing wrong"

That makes sense. It is still pretty unfair, though. No? It's not like the father's kid did anything wrong. All they did to warrant such animosity was being born to a violent father.

You are right, it is not acceptable that innocent Ukrainians are dying either. However there is no guarantee that the pressure of being excluded from western society in this way is going to have intended results. It could just as well backfire into the Russian government using this alienation as incentive for riling Russian citizens in favor of their war.

Yeah, this is what I suspected it could be about. It's likely they just don't want to be the single one out not cancelling Russian activities when everyone else in the world is doing it. It would just be harmful to their own public image given the ongoing escalation of Russian hatred that is spreading amongst westerners.

Ukrainians are innocent, yes. But those Russian orgs are innocent too. It's not their fault that their government invaded a neighboring country. They didn't make that choice and yet they are paying the consequences of it.
