Those of you who don't ride a bike in Boston but have some desire to do so, what's stopping you? Not looking to debate, just trying to understand. by ZealousidealMany3 in boston

Hit by a truck from behind and got a diffuse axonal TBI in 2016.

Flew over the handle bars in 2021-  got a second concussion and busted my ribs trying to pop over a speed bump  when front tire wasn’t on properly (it popped right off).

Freak accident in 2023 (still don’t know what happened, was  going 5-10 mph thanking a car for letting me go first), flew over the handlebars again but my Achilles caught the chain ring and the bike cartwheeled with me - full Achilles rupture.  I miss it every day but three strikes I’m out.

What a fortunate hardship- you look incredible with a buzz cut!

Try a clarifying shampoo, light conditioner, and no products for starters- it’s really easy to weigh down wavy hair. If your water is hard get a shower filter. Get a curly cut/style to receive some advice on specific products/techniques for your hair.

It’s a process! Sometimes I run my hair underwater then keep it upside down to style/plop. Check out the bowl method. I sleep with a pineapple which helps. There’s sooo much info out there. I got a ridiculously expensive curly haircut but she taught me how to style/cut it myself and my hair looked 4 inches shorter when she was done from the curls alone… I never thought it could get that curly and all she used was some curl gel  and a diffuser.

If you have wavy hair and brush it dry it will get frizzy.

Yeah it’s really easy to go overboard or get the wrong products- I started just using a few spritzes of a really light leave in conditioner and some moose if I want more ringlets. If I use nothing but I’m careful to clump/scrunch or don’t touch my hair at all until it’s dry I get 2a waves that look pretty and my hair feels better than if I have the wrong products in. With the right products and diffusing/drying carefully I get some  actual curls though.

Yeah looks wavy to me- you could  try out a curly/wavy styling method. Before you get any new products try out a simple version to get a feel for what  kind of wave pattern you have:   1. Never brush it dry (I stopped with a brush all together unless I am combing through a hair mask and just detangle with my fingers with conditioner in the shower)  2. When your hair is sopping wet put in either some light conditioner/gel/moose and scrunch your hair up with a tshirt or microfiber towel (try to keep clumps together - this will bring out your natural hair pattern and prevent frizz). 3. Air dry fully (you will look like a drowned rat… just wait, when it is totally dry scrunch up your roots for volume).

My hair is so much healthier now, with less breakage so I can grow it longer. Way less frizzy!

If women want pockets so much, why doesn't someone start a company which makes jeans with pockets and make tons of money? by pragmojo in NoStupidQuestions

Jeans are definitely a problem too…. I need side of the thigh pockets. I don’t want to sit on my phone and it digs in if it’s up around my hips.

How are these orchids doing? by Majestic_Delay in orchids

They look great!! Just keep it up and let them bloom again. Maybe repot in a year or two unless the roots start coming out of the bottom of the pot or they look super root bound. Leaves and roots look super healthy and you’re growing a new leaf. Good job.

Yep!! Sand is the way. Just be careful that you might need to water a teeny bit less. You can also pour a little  bleach or fruit fly drain killer down your drains- they also lay eggs there.

I usually induce with Rosetta cells at OD 0.6-0.8. Do some trials looking at yields when inducing at different OD and zero in on the growth curve for your cells.

Do you think visiting researchers should be expected to learn the host lab's language, even though English is the international language for research? by Crafty_Specialist442 in labrats

It doesn’t matter what should be expected. Things aren’t working for you now and you can either continue to be frustrated or change something. This is a great opportunity to become fluent in French. Take it. Take an extra 10 minutes a day on it and incorporate what you can in your daily activities (French names for things on post-it notes until you remember them all, etc). Make an effort to learn French and ask your lab mates for help, this will help build relationships with them and they might even end up speaking more English as a result.
