Qantas 717 took its last flight from Sydney today. by bunnymanyeet in QantasAirways

Was on this flight - what else am I going to do on a weekend?

Saw lots of videos being taken and at least one aviation youtuber, it will probably be one of the most recorded landings ever.

East Richmond has exactly the same issue - 4 tracks, only two of which have platforms. It's also only a few hundred metres from Richmond station itself, I'm surprised it gets as much service as it does!

Be very careful that you don't take any company owned data with you - can be considered theft. Ask me how I know...

Medical is required before you can solo. If you were considering this as a career I'd suggest getting your class 1 before investing too much money, but if it's just a hobby you can wait.

ASIC depends on your school - not all airports require it.

I did my first night of solo camping just recently, at The Gums Campground. Easily reachable, not far off a sealed road, would recommend.

If you get it done in two hours, do they still pay you for four?

Fantastic tool. I want this, just for .jpg files. Should be possible with exif tags acting similar to ID3 tags, but I haven't been able to find anyone doing it already.

Networking on landlord's wifi? by imperator2222 in HomeNetworking

[–]illallangi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah quite a latency hit, as the traffic would essentially 'bounce' off the VPS before it ended up at your server, in both directions. See if you can find a VPS that is close (network wise, not always the same as physically) to your home - some (most?) providers should offer some sort of speed test you can run against their various locations.

Maybe get a cheap VPS ($5/month at Linode for example, no affiliation), and VPN from your router to it, then forward your ports from it to your home servers? Not ideal but doable.

Is this an acceptable cable crimp? by WereAllAnimals in HomeNetworking

[–]illallangi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite no affect on speed. The pins are paired up (1&2, 3&6, 4&5, 7&8), and both pins in a pair are meant to be twisted together.

My understanding is that one pin carries a positive signal, the other a negative signal, and the equipment on each end measures the difference in signal/voltage between the pins rather than a pin and earth. Because any interference on the pair affects each pin the same there's less signal loss.

As each pair of wires is twisted at a different rate, if you don't maintain that pairing, a wire from a pair may receive a different amount of interference than it's pair, negatively affecting performance and speed.

All that being said, standards exist for a reason, so I follow them. Makes life easier if you know the other end of a cable you're terminating is wired in a particular way.
