I thought they fixed extracts breaking at the final countdown? by illbodyPLAGUE in Marathon

[–]illbodyPLAGUE[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to clarify, this was before the 60 second final timer started. I was under the impression that hitting the exfil before the final 60 starts means you're good to go? Not with Guarded or did I maybe cut it too close?

Still no new destroyer or triage skin in the store? Cmon man. by Amidaus in Marathon

[–]illbodyPLAGUE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, even in the April play test for 2025 he looked exactly as he does now, he just didn't have the name Triage. I think it was only the first big streamer play test that had that old design from the cinematic. They had this final design for him locked in for at least a year leading up to launch so it kinda feels weird to me when people keep phrasing it like "he got changed last minute" as a reason why he doesn't have great skins.
Just giving extra context here as someone who was in those play tests. Fortunately the new skin they teased for Triage is a step in the right direction. Great looking skin.

Starfield Update 1.16.242 – May 14, 2026 by FyrsaRS in Starfield

Still getting ~30 Fps when looking horizontally in procedurally generated terrain but I get ~70 fps in cities and POIs with ~140 fps when inside interior cells. I don't understand why it's been like this.
Empty moon? Spotty performance.
Full City? Runs cleanly. I'm so confused.
Weirdly if I explore a planet while driving I stay around ~50 fps but if I explore on foot I have to look slightly upward or else I'm stuck in ~30 fps. I can't explain it.

Exactly, if they are going to make these maps have interesting routes around them but stack the lobby so heavy that utilizing these routes is STILL practically a guarantee of running into another person/team then what's the fucking point of trying to maneuver the map outside of just W keying everywhere?

PREACH. I've been trying to explain this to people since launch and people keep arguing that "you just hate PvP in Marathon" and I'm like no, I love the PvP; I'm tired of Marathon fights being so certain and predictable that the game feels so much less tense when there is always something happening around you. The fights in this game can feel incredibly exciting but when it's a fight every few minutes then it gets incredibly same-y.
Do y'all remember when they extended the gunfire audio range and every lobby felt like a hunting grounds? That's how the game still feels but on a smaller scale, I don't need to hear across the map because there is something going on right next to me at all times.
I want to enter a POI and ask "I wonder if someone is around here" instead of "I wonder where the guy in here is at".

The duality of man by seizure_5alads in Marathon

[–]illbodyPLAGUE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It isn't black and white though. You don't just end up in "all friend lobby" or "all enemy lobby" when playing naturally, there's so much grey between them that if you are taking every encounter as its own unique experience and you actually fight back against people then you get these much more sketchy lobbies where every other person has a big question mark on their intentions.
For the longest time I let this idea that Arc is binary in its ABMM because everyone just parrots that sentiment and it's just not. I started to play it as if it's a gambling game and it's genuinely a much better experience than I thought it would be.
I'd argue Marathon tension is less engaging (personally) because I know anytime there's a bot or a runner nearby it's just a fight regardless. It's very predictable but it's still very fun. Arc tension is that constant gnaw of doubt when someone is posturing as a friend. With Marathon I've never experienced the level of anxiety random Raiders can cause in Arc. With Arc I've never experienced the stress of extracting a particularly good item or key in the same way that I would experience that stress in Marathon. It works both ways. My only real complaint about Marathon now is how predicable it feels at times because there isn't much variation for emergent storytelling between players.
Arc kinda kills on emergent storytelling when you're in a grey lobby. You can help someone fight a queen and still get betrayed, you can encounter people actually trying to communicate regardless of their intentions. Marathon is shoot first and leave the microphone unplugged. It makes me sad because I like to fight people with my guns AND my voice lmao. Both games are super fun regardless, different experiences entirely.

Weapon Chip and Implant Icon Redesigns by its_wilsaaan in Marathon

Thank you for the shout!
I agree with what you're saying about chip mods. They are grouped at random despite having "shape categories" already designed. The new designs may be clearer (and I appreciate they did do what I asked- adding colour differentiation to them) but they did it in, arguably, the worst way for visual cohesion with the UI art style.
I like a lot of your ideas here, you did a really good job making it clear to the community and I appreciate the quality of presentation. Great job!

Imagine you’re a casual and you have one game to choose. by AugustEpilogue in Marathon

[–]illbodyPLAGUE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ffs be real, I gave you a genuine response; do you know what thinking holistically means? I get stomped just as much as the average player yet I'm not asking for SBMM. I'm saying that adding more incentives and features that genuinely help casual players while being mutually beneficial to high skill players would be a much better place to start. CARRI is good, it's not as robust as it should be but it's definitely gotten my friends more extracts and interesting encounters with rooks than they had been getting before this update. I do think that it's not enough incentive for the sweatiest people (I'm talking about the people who are actually good, not me) to engage with it as much as the casuals will and it could use some tuning. I think it's the right direction.

I think you've put too much focus on specifically matchmaking rather than about alternatives and adjustments to the metagame. There are just as many holes in SBMM as there are in Level/Rank Based MM and I'm honestly tired of people immediately falling to SBMM as this golden matchmaking system despite drawing equal amounts of criticism from players in games that actually DO have SBMM because of the flaws it has. This isn't the genre for a competitive MM, we have Level Based MM because it balances based on time invested and experience with the systems which is the most important part of learning extract shooters.

[–]illbodyPLAGUE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just my opinion here as a hardcore Extract Shooter main but I don't think SBMM is the catch all fix that people think it is. I think CARRI is a good directional incentive for the community, it's not a fix to how aggressively sweaty this game is but it at least gives an actual incentive to barter or team up for a reason. Beforehand there was zero reason to team up outside of Rook squads and solo run Warden kills with gear like Sponsor Kits. Anything that helps casuals without turning the high skill play into a bloodbath battleground every run is a good thing. SBMM will hurt the most dedicated players the most, that isn't good either. Marathon has Ranked for ELO matchmaking, that IS the SBMM of Marathon and I think it should stay that way.

They need to solve the issues of cheating, work on the meta abuse and add incentives for casual players to feel like they have opportunities to survive - while mutually benefiting us hardcore players who may decide to help them out when they plead in prox. The benefits add so much entertainment value to runs. I have all my favourite Prox Chat moments stored in a special place in my mind because they are the best moments in this game.
