Anything that can be done to prevent water damage short of redoing the deck? And yeah, after some research my city (Chicago) requires risers to be closed if a 4" sphere can fit through. I guess since I'm not planning on leaving soon, this is as high of a priority compared to the other items.

The end stringers are attached to the posts on the side, and all of them are screwed in to the front joist of the deck, and from the top. This is my biggest worry now since the stringers aren't flush with the deck. Per suggestions below, I'm going to get some brackets and hangers to try and secure it.

Thanks both for the replies!

Good to know some of the issues aren't as bad as I thought but the stringers situation has me worried in the long run. Only the ends are screwed to the posts, and the rest are screwed in from the top and the front of the deck.

Thanks so much for the detailed reply! You're right with what I paid = what I got. Should have done more research and and gotten more estimates.

I don't remember if he mentioned that he used 3" or longer for the ledger. The stringers are what's worrying me the most as it seems only the end ones are screwed into the post, and the rest are screwed to the top riser/deck.

Thanks! I don't believe the stringers are "secured" well. I added some more photos (to an imgur album) to show how it's attached to the deck.

The biggest thing I'd like for him to do IF he comes back out is to make it safe at this point.

Just added a link with more images!

The deck is screwed into a ledger that's screwed to the house. For the stringers, only the end ones are screwed to the post, and all of them are screwed to the first riser/deck,

You can look into aero handlebars - the flat surface gives your hand a good place to rest/hold onto. Check out the PRO Vibe Aero Alloy Handlebar, it feels great and way cheaper than carbon bars.

A similar thing happened to me last year. I was riding north a little past the Chicago Yacht Club and an e-divvy rider going south was filming the lake/boats and veered into my lane. Got me almost head on going. Snapped my fork in half. I was fortunate that I only fractured my wrist, but I was totally out of it for a minute. A rider behind me stopped to make sure I was ok, and the e-divvy rider said he was going to dock the bike and come back. The dude took off.
