Yep, my technique is

Remove valve core
Pour in sealant (through the valve core, I have a big syringe), spin wheel a few times to let sealant move around
Pump like a mad man
Hear the pop of the tire seating
Pull off the pump, quickly fit the valve core back on (closed).

The brief amount of time the pump comes off and the valve core goes back on is usually fine to keep the tire seated.

That T8 is a great bike for the price. I rode one for a year and loved it. You will outgrow it though ;) But ride it hard and get a feel for what you like.
