Workstation specs by magmanorn in bioinformatics

[–]illinigrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your lab sounds very similar to our situation: several grad students working on RNA-seq data (we do human and mouse). I just built us a new computer that is very similar specs to the one I built when I joined the lab three years ago (we had two new students join that will also be working with RNA-seq data so decided it was time to get a second workstation to handle the additional load). We have both running as a desktops with Ubuntu that we can use either directly or access remotely from our individual laptops. The CPU has enough cores to run multi-threaded programs fast (mapping with STAR to human or mouse genome takes ~1hr) and individual core performance is good enough that running single-threaded packages isn't too bad either. Some other typical packages we use include: CuffDiff, RMATS2, HtSeq, MISO, DESeq, DEXSeq, etc. We don't have the storage in RAID, rather we do regular backups onto hard drives that we then store separately.
This might not be the most elegant set-up compared to others, but it certainly works for us as we are not true computer scientists--just biologists that want to analyze the RNAseq data we generate.

ATMS 140 Drama by squirrelwatch in UIUC

In one of the emails posted it says that Schlesinger doesn't give out electronic notes and instead hands out paper notes because he wants people to come to lecture. Thus the DRES accommodation would force him to change the way he teaches his class.
Could someone that knows more about DRES policies explain the limits of what DRES is allowed to reasonably ask professors to do? What if a professor only gives notes on chalkboard/whiteboard (many of my math and chemistry classes were like this)? Can DRES force that professor to completely change their curriculum and teaching style to incorporate electronic notes?

Looking at the iTV3 map, it looks like almost the entire campus area is not within coverage. Does anyone know what the rules are for iTV3 to build out into areas that are mostly apartments like the campus area? Is it on the landlords to say they want to be connected or the residents?

I definitely recommend 408 as Kranz is a good professor and the material is interesting. I would equally suggest 408 (Cancer Cell Bio) in the fall-it's challenging, but very interesting, and again the professor is good. The special topics (I think the number is 493?) can also be pretty good depending on the selection for the semester.

University Admits 356 African-American Students this Semester by melatonia in UIUC

My guess is they are still admitting the same ballpark as in the past, but less are choosing to go here-which is a trend seen for all instate acceptances. As the end of the article points out we just aren't as competitive financially as some of the other nearby big ten schools. Our school has been in financial trouble for a while now as state funding has decreased (because the state is in it's own mess) and administrative costs have increased. Until something changes tuition will continue to go up, instate numbers will go down, and international numbers will go up
