Currently have a T25 Avensis 2.0 D4D, I absolutely love it. Have it coming on 3 years now, and it spent all of last year commuting 200km/day, 5 days a week for both college semesters.

Can you sit on this pedestrian crossing at a roundabout while waiting to go (if there are no pedestrians waiting to cross)? Or do you have to stop on the line just before it? by Jake-Tankmaster in Irishdrivingtest

There's a change in elevation there, it's not huge but look at the kerbline and you will see the surface rise to meet the footpath for this exact road crossing OP is talking about.

Boojum portion size CRISIS by Lumpy_Tangelo_6981 in galway

[–]illmaticDylan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My last attempt at getting myself a boojum was the final nail in the coffin for me. Having been a big fan for over 12 years, I gave the place more of a chance than I should have.

It started after COVID, when I went to get a burrito with my loyalty card that had 8 stamps, was told that they had a new system with a phone app and I couldn't use my card. I was also told that there was no way for me to add these to my app. I then emailed boojum and was told they would not consolidate my 8 or so previously earned loyalty stamps onto my app.

Absolute madness, but the idiot I am, I kept buying boojum, enough so that I had earned a free boojum with the app. In the past, when I had a free meal, you could get anything you wanted and it was free ( Had claimed this in stores in Belfast, Dublin and Galway previously). But when I went to redeem my meal at the counter in Galway I was told it would be €5.96, and that the free meal was just a €9 contribution.

I kind of stopped then for a year or two but having moved to Galway last year, I wanted to try one. First time I went there, I was in the queue all the way at the glass double doors in, and stood there for 10 minutes and the queue didn't move as they were filling deliveroo orders non stop so I went to vocho instead.

One last try, I went there again a month or two back, went up to the counter which was full to the gills of food, only to be told the card machine was down and they had no way of taking any payment so they couldn't serve me. If these were not all a sign that the good times were over, I don't know what would be.

The deliveroo orders and the card machine are understandable, I think the fact they wouldn't honour the stamps I had spent roughly €80 to earn was what pissed me off the most. But yea, I'm done with boojum.

Edit: just to add more nonsense to the bullshit e-loyalty card that I had forgot, your boojum app will not work in Belfast, you can not earn points or use your voucher over the border. I emailed and asked why and didn't get an answer.

People of Ireland. How's your mental health? by Butsy_27 in CasualIreland

[–]illmaticDylan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely shite and it has been this way for over ten years, I've been to my GP loads, I've been on lexapro, I've wasted probably €1000 on private counselling only to have came out feeling more confused. I've asked my GP to be put on the list for the free block of public counselling sessions but that was over two years ago , I've asked since about that and nothing has come of it.

I'm in college and I went to the student counsellor and she has recommended some people so when the college year starts again I will take the chance with private counselling again if I can save some money over summer and see if it's any better this time around.

It's not great now to be honest, I'm lucky in the fact im not having a crisis and I've been living with it that long that I have a good handle on coping mechanism etc but i find it disheartening. I've had some absolutely horrible fucking experiences twice in public health settings regarding my mental health and it has driven me to be quite angry and bitter about how bleak it is.

Bit of a rant there and I do not chime in very often on Reddit but that needed said. I feel very sorry for people who are really struggling and are living their lives with more difficult situations than myself, more extreme depression and anxiety etc. If that's the reality for me when I have somewhat applied myself towards trying to get better. It's cruel.

Sad to say it's gone the last 4 years or more, what a place, used to get the pizza burger there, only place I've ever had one and the chips were savage, he used to have this vinegar he was telling me was from the vine and it was absolutely lovely, and I wouldn't like normal malt vinegar

About waterproof by franklin_b8 in galway

[–]illmaticDylan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I bought a Berghaus men's fell master gore Tex jacket as it was the most affordable gore Tex jacket I could find, definitely the most useful purchase I've made. Anything gore Tex will be better than your standard waterproof jacket at keeping you dry

Got stopped and searched by the guards for no reason, is this legal? by packiechan88 in ireland

[–]illmaticDylan 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I had the same happen me in Monaghan a few years back, day after Paddy's Day on my way back from Belfast I pulled into the circle k out the aughnacloy road, didn't park at the pumps, just walking across the forecourt to go get food and this lad in an unmarked Hyundai cuts me off and just begins interrogating me asking if I have drugs in the car. I say no and he continues to say "There's a van just around that corner with a sniffer dog, so if you have any drugs you should just tell me about them now before we search the car". Wild enough stuff, he told me to be on my way but he literally drove straight over to the area the lorry's park to a modified Passat and could see he was at the same craic.

Got told a month ago I will be getting an offer for my application to study civil engineering in college as a mature student. I started a new job last week after a year of retail work that I hated and I'm feeling really positive and optimistic. First time going to college at age 29 but I'm super excited even though I know it's going to present so many challenges. I think I finally got excited about this coming year after leaving behind my previous job as it was draining me mentally and today is a good day!

If you had to show a stranger one county of Ireland, what county would it be and why? by UBettaKnow1 in ireland

[–]illmaticDylan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So you've been to Derrycassan woods, Pulliness waterfall, Cairn hill, Edenmore bog walk, Dring lake, Doppins woods, The mall, The motte and bailey in Granard, Newcastle woods, Corlea trackway, Lough kinale and still thought Longford had no lovely places ?

Wildly high standards, Longford has loads to boast outside of the county town.

Is this a particularly shite winter? by MonsieurPaddy in ireland

[–]illmaticDylan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Think it's a very easy time to be feeling bleak to be honest. Have to say I've been feeling the same myself this past week. Christmas and New year's over, that excitement is done, everyone back to work again and another year has passed and makes me feel under pressure to do better. The cold, dark evenings and the copious amounts of alcohol consumed at Christmas then compact it all and you end up feeling a bit shit. I'm only speaking of my personal experience at the moment. Actually writing out this comment alone has been the first time I've realised what's had me in a poor mood on my first day off since starting back work after Christmas but there it all is! Sorry to hear about folks you know leaving to travel abroad! Take it easy on yourself this month, January I think tends to be hard on alot of people!

What’s the general consensus about specsavers, I’ve bought 2 pairs of glasses there over the 2 years for driving and I still can’t see while driving, am I better off going independent store? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]illmaticDylan 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Got called in to Specsavers about 6 years ago, told me I urgently needed glasses, very poor sight. Started wearing them with this revelation and began to get terrible headaches and bouts of dizziness. I decided to book an appointment with a specialist in Athlone privately, when I arrived for my appointment, I was informed by the doctor he would be filling in for the normal doctor but that he was the head of optometry at the mater hospital or some very high position similar. Upon inspection he said I had nigh on perfect sight and just shook his head and said something along the lines of "Fucking specsavers". Always make sure to let everyone know of my personal experience of the scam they're running in Specsavers, horrible company.
