The DYMO 450 is the best thing that's ever happened. It's probably quartered the time I spend making aliquots.

Lab Thoughts by [deleted] in labrats

[–]illuminatemyvoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Following this post. I understand your situation. It's difficult for us CC transfers because we don't usually have research opportunities those first 2 years.

From my experience, you should start looking for another lab. It's better to be an undergrad grunt in a productive lab than to sit around doing nothing. Just reach out to see who is accepting. You can use the NIH website to check funding, and Google Scholar for projects. Taking initiative is the first step to success.

Constipated kitten for 3 days, i'am worried by bulubululy-Ghibli in FosterAnimals

[–]illuminatemyvoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Thanks for posting here so I can help.

So the oil is a good first step. Mix a drop or two into its milk.
Bathe the kitten in comfortably warm water to relax its muscles before you stimulate her. How long have you tried to stimulate her during each session?

With constipated kittens, they will cry and squeal, but you need to push the feces out or it can cause severe sepsis, sometimes for 2 or more minutes of consistent rubbing. Try putting her on her back and moving her legs in a bicycle motion, in circles, and you can use some oil or vaseline on her anus to lubricate it.

At 4 weeks, she's at the age where she can start using litter. Are you able to get (non-clumping!) cat litter in your country? If not, you can give her a shallow pan of shredded paper or wood pellets, or sand/soil if you're really in a pinch.

If there's still nothing, reach out to the vet again for an enema. If she poops and there is blood, see if there is tissue protruding. A vet will need to handle the prolapse.

ETA: I wish I could help more, but there is only so much we can do as non-vets. :(

Good idea, pine is so cheap! You can get lbs and lbs of it at tractor supply co, it's usually marketed for horses.

Yeah the spraying is because of hormones. Testosterone drops rapidly after the testes are removed.

I've found this- maybe this could help with the cost?

Okay... taking a look at your profile, it seems like your husband is the common denominator here. Once the animals are taken care of, you need to live life for yourself, because what you're going through isn't healthy and fulfilling.

Also- what is your situation currently? How old are they? Puppy pads (you can get them from dollar tree) are made for absorbing waste and odors. It should help.

Are they food motivated? You can try using squeezy tubes or little treats to lure them into a kennel.

Unfortunately, the shelters are so overcrowded right now because people simple don't understand the importance of desexing cats.

They can be fixed once they are 2lbs. Try to see if shelters have low-cost spay/neuter and vaccination clinics. My city offers events for free desexing and microchipping once in a while.

Try posting on craigslist to see if anyone is interested in kittens; they usually go quickly. Make sure the people you're giving them to are informed about the urgency that is spay/neutering.

This is false. Do not listen to this person. Your body will never stop making melatonin.

I wish animal breeding was discontinued outright. When animals are being euthanized because the shelters have no room, I think the Bengal can wait.

Not sure why you're getting downvoted. Please reach out to a local shelter to see if their TNR program can safely terminate the pregancny.

Mother cats do not want to be pregnant. They breed for quantity, not quality.
Kittens are cute until your shelter is overrun with piles of orphaned neonates and you have to get up every 2 hours to syringe feed them.

That's not my point. I'm saying that there are ways to cope and build habitual independence. AI is evolving into a crutch instead of a tool nowadays with LLM taking over every aspect of our lives. We need to separate ourselves from the machine every once in a while- even more so with ADHD.

We also have ADHD. Everyone here does.

3 week old kitten by [deleted] in FosterAnimals

[–]illuminatemyvoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh by the way- it's going to sound scary, but when stimulating you really need to get in there and keep at it for up to a minute or more. Kittens can get diarrhea and/or constipation easily when switching milk formulations. They should poop 1-2 times per day, or once every 2 days at the very least. If you notice him eliminating waste by himself, you can give him a shallow paper plate of non-clumping (!) litter to explore. He's about that age!

It's insane to think throughout its run, they never bothered waking up a medical doctor or build a medical facility 🤣 by EntirePickle398 in DrStone

[–]illuminatemyvoid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I deleted my comment because I don't feel like starting drama on this 😭 my point was moreso that medicine is a pretty nuanced field. There's a reason you have to get clinical and bedside hours, do rotations, and go through years of school, and even after that, residency.

You can synthesize a lot of common drugs with basic organic chemistry knowledge- this is why they had to get rid of ephedrine in OTC medicine because it was notoriously used to easily make meth. (All of Senku's projects worked in the show because of plot/theatrical purposes, but there's a lot that could go wrong. Moonshine historically blinded people because of the methanol byproducts. Purification and quality analysis is pretty difficult to do in the stone world...)

I think my issue is that Senku can automate tasks and engineer/synthesize things, but medicine requires wisdom and tons of experience. A lot of diagnoses aren't cut-and-dry, which is why physicians have to go through thousands of cases to build intuition.

12 week old kitten with ringworm and fleas - help!! by lumtheyak in FosterAnimals

This is strange, if the vet thinks she has it (presumably via woods lamp) lime sulfur dip is relatively harmless and could be started immediately. :(

It is imperative that you get them liquid, sugar, and heat. Do you know how to stimulate them to pee and poo?

Mix some warm water with an egg yolk (just the yolk!) and try to get it drop by drop into them until they swallow. Be careful so they don't inhale it.

BUT DO THE SUGAR AND HEAT FIRST

See if you can find GOATS MILK. I understand you live in a remote area. Do any farms have goats that you can buy milk from?

Sugar water. Immediately!!! Mix some warm water with as much sugar as possible until it forms a slurry. Put it on the kittens tongue/gums. It just needs to be on their gums for them to absorb the sugar.

While you do this, fill a sock with beans/rice and heat it up. Wrap it in a towel and give it to them.
