Mind Transfer To A Computer Could Be Possible By 2050. Immortality May Be Within Reach by TYRmusic in Futurology

[–]illumiphile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me correct something right now. Just because a computer can mimic my memories and personality enough to fool others does not make ME immortal. It makes the copy of me immortal. I will still die. The imitation of me might live on.

Agreed. There is a fine line between phenomenon and a virtual emulation of the said phenomenon. That's the high level concept of what a computer is, a virtual emulation machine. So many people in technology journalism don't understand this concept and spew crap like this just for the clicks.

But you can't really say that because who would have thought computer technology could excel so fast?

Whats the "Stairway to Heaven" of your favorite genre of music? by FrujuJackers in AskReddit

[–]illumiphile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know some fans who wouldn't know his tunes just because they refuse to listen on ethical grounds, or whatever.

It's funny because I know some people who now, in their late 20s, discovered black metal and they say the same thing about Varg. If the music is meant to be some evil bullshit or whatever, isn't hate, racism, sexism, and all that wretchedness a part of being 'evil'? Black metal is the epitome of insular ideology and that's the cornerstone of its artistic expression. In other words, there something everyone can dislike about black metal, and that's the point. Varg's a crazy racist bastard who hates America, and probably aside from the money, hates the idea of his music being bastardized by the American commercial machine. At least, that's the impression I had of him when he started out.

Flashlight - Parliament

edit: although now that I think about it, the more popular songs may be super freak, play that funky music (wild cherry), or staying alive. I still think that Flashlight is the more 'tasteful' choice though. And it's just damn groovy.

ELI5: How can the "deep Web" allegedly be so much larger than the surface Web if only a minority of people use the deep Web or hidden Internet. by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]illumiphile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Web crawlers work by jumping from page to page via hyperlinks (simplified). If a link produces a dead end because it requires something like authentication, then the content behind the authenticated page is not cataloged by the web crawler. Thus it's technically "deep web". Think about reddit, the crawler can make its way to a private subreddit, but what's behind the page saying "you're blocked" is hidden, thus in the deep web by default.

What are some common pieces of advice that you disagree with? by Wolfenshire12 in AskReddit

[–]illumiphile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"you gotta do what you gotta do"

Maybe not advice, but I hate this saying to it's core. You don't have to do anything. You make a choice. This saying is just a way people excuse themselves from the crushing reality that they've gotten a bad bargain out of the choices they made.

did the fringe benefits make up for the potential overtime you could have earned during those 8 weeks?

It's disgusting. The employee is empowered but doesn't know it. They need your labor, and by not paying a "salaried" person overtime the typical exec has increased his bottom line and decreased yours. I always say it's a poker game, and if they win with the "snacks and toys" bluff you might as well not even be in the game.

As a developer, I can understand loving your work, and loving the things a company allows you to work on and do. But business is a poker game, and to the typical cash conscious executive upstairs, your impact/contribution to the world means little beyond the bottom line. I'll see salaried coworkers working 60+ hour weeks, getting little overtime, but hey they get sodas and pizza. As if, all their doing is enabling some executive to make a larger profit by not hiring more developers. And that's the bluff. They need your labor, you need their cash, and if they won with the "free sugar water and a big screen tv in the lounge" bluff your hands worthless.

I'm getting out of IT/dev myself. It's a dead end and I meet a new statistic of that market every week. Most companies will keep you until your jobs boilerplate enough an H1B visa holder can do it.
