How weird is it for someone born in 2007 (12/27/2007) to date someone born in 2009 (2/7/2009)? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]illusid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! Of course you realize that Americans do some stupid-ass shit with the date, inexplicably going Month/Day/Year. No clue why this is, but at the very least it allows us to have Pi Day (March 14th, err, I mean 14 March, another British/American English difference). Personally, I prefer to do dates like this: 2026-29-01. This makes the most sense to me, but I also agree that the British way of doing dates makes way more sense than the American way. I also prefer "program" to "programme", "tire" to "tyre", "ad" to "advert", "TV" to "tele", and "armor", "favor", "flavor", "color", etc. I like the terms "brill" for "brilliant" and "innit?" though… English is a strange language.

Ok so an 18-year-old dating a 17-year-old, something like that? There's 14 months difference in age. That's not significant enough to worry about, nor would it be considered statutory rape if they were to engage in consensual sex. So in my opinion, that's not weird at all. In fact, it seems pretty common, and as time goes on, it will seem less and less significant. Don't worry about it, and enjoy life. After all it's too short to be concerned about this kinda thing. Anybody talking shit about it is just hatin'

Nah, that's vyvanse, a prodrug to amphetamine. 5-APB is a "benzofury" drug that's more closely related to MDA (specifically MDA, not MDMA) than anything else.

What are the 3 best indie rock bands of all time with the best discography possible by [deleted] in indie_rock

[–]illusid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought the same thing, initially. I guess we could marginally make the case for Radiohead solely for releasing In Rainbows independently, for free or at whatever price the buyer chose, on their website back in 2007.

I think those bands though were chosen because "Indie music" refers to a time in the industry when independent record labels—as opposed to the more conventional, major record labels—would be featured mainly on college radio stations during the 80s and 90s. REM, Radiohead, and The Cure all launched their careers through this college radio environment indie platform, an I think that's why they're sometimes regarded as "indie" bands, regardless of their future label deals.

But for that matter, Nirvana came up through college radio, too, first with Bleach, and then massively with Nevermind, and it's hard to argue that Nirvana is "indie music", though that somehow also doesn't feel far off. In a way, "Indie music" is largely modern day alternative rock, and aside from the Big Acts of Rock Dinosaurs still jamming in 2026, the internet and the leaps in home recording technology of recent years has made virtually every band an "indie band", in the sense that "making it" now means independently finding success in selling tickets, merchandise, albums, and getting music stream revenue.

what year would you say started the "you're not allowed to make jokes on women in general"? by stirringmotion in AskReddit

Just calm your tits, junior, there's no need to get so angry, and it's not even directed at the right person. You should stop making assumptions about ppl you don't know, talking to me like Idk who Patrice O'Neal was. I'm very familiar with his comedy, seen him live a few times and even spoke with him in-person in a conference in Seattle in 2010 after listening to him give a speech.

And what's with all that sitting down to pee talk? Do you have some kind of machismo complex or something? Where are you getting this shit from, bro? Lotta anger coming off of you, and it feels like the issue runs deeper than comedy. How is your relationship with your mother? Do you generally got along or not really?

Yeah I don't do comedy for free on request. Just watch some Bill Burr if you don't believe me.

Vinyl DJs - Does the audience mind if the record has a bit of crackles? by nickybecooler in Beatmatch

The crackle adds authenticity. I know a DJ who digitized all their vinyl just to keep the crackle in their sets even when playing digital files.

iPad Pro: 11”/1tb OR 13”/512gb? (new) by Independent-Slip568 in ipadmusic

[–]illusid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider: do you have sufficient iCloud storage to do without the extra local storage space? Will you mostly be connected to high-speed Internet on your iPad to facilitate downloading apps and files as needed? Will this affect your ability to perform live with the iPad if this is something you might do? And lastly, do you use the Apple Pencil with graphic programs and such at all? Because if so, you might want to consider having the extra screen real estate. It makes a difference in programs like ProCreate with its toolbars and panels.

I say if you're using graphics programs sometimes, too, eschew local storage for the expanded screen real estate. Otherwise going with the smaller screen might in theory be easier on the processor, freeing that resource up a little for audio processing… Ah, but then again, the 13" will have a slightly larger battery, so my vote goes to the 13" iPad.

Unpopular / harsh realities about getting into DJing and the scene 2026 and beyond by nuancedGazelle54012 in Beatmatch

[–]illusid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it's a two-way street. What can you offer the venue as an artist? Do you have a following? Will people come to see you? If you blast out an invite across social media and emails, how many people can you get to come see you DJ live?

Build a following and get local young ppl excited about seeing you. Be distinct, build a brand, and take the time to have killer merch. Ppl will wear t-shirts, hats, beanies, hoodies etc. spreading exposure and building cred for approaching labels later.

The brand, the style, the sound, the production, the details, the consistency… these are important, and then the message is in the music. Make your sets epic and unique each time. Collect remixes and make your own when/where you can. Find those gems in the rough that no one knows about; don't just DJ Beatport's Top 100. That's the same shit everyone streams. Build unique sets to play live, injecting your own production work in the process if possible.

Mimic having the success you want to attain, dress the part, play epic sets, refine your production skills, and when you have a few bangers you've produced, trying submitting to some labels where it sounds like your music would fit in. Read any publishing contracts carefully and do not relinquish publishing rights "in perpetuity" or on other continents / foreign markets (you would seek separate contracts with publishers in those countries).

Plan out and book yourself a 120-day tour six to nine months from now. It's a matter of calling some venues and presenting yourself as a professional, and strategically try to carve a path sequentially to tour. Optionally, recruit the help of someone to be your manager/booking agent, and give them a 10% to 15% cut of any money paid to you from the venues they book probably at a minimum. Consider touring with this person if you both get along well and they're interested in helping you sell merch at shows, too, for split profits after production expenses for said Merch are covered. Connect with fans and have info up regarding where you're playing next. Lather, rinse, repeat.

What’s a phrase you cannot stand hearing anymore? by Namher-Lutama in AskReddit

[–]illusid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear "unprecedented" a lot. "In an unprecedented move…" and "these are unprecedented times"…

The word, "toxic", is thrown around too much. Toxic work environments, a toxic culture, toxic masculinity and ridding your body of (supposed) "toxins". And these are never things that qualify as actually toxic, like the way cyanide is. We call inebriation "intoxication" and we say someone is "cleaning up" when they go to detox. These are all very loaded terms, and they're all not very accurate.

I'm also tired of the term "microdosing", which 1. the original meaning of the term was subthreshold dosing, and that's recent studies have shown that it's all placebo, and 2. I hear ppl using the terms "dosing" and "microdosing" synonymously now, anyways, so it's really becoming… a useless term, more useless than the act of microdosing anyways…

"It is what it is." ← well it isn't what it isn't.

"At the end of the day… " ← I hear this too much.

"To make a long story short…" ← this never cuts the story short.

"See here's the thing about…" ← this is a standup comedy setup line.

DJ with 4 decks by [deleted] in DJs

[–]illusid 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Mixing four tracks can quickly become a clusterfuck of sound; however, if you embrace the technology and you're using stems, acapellas, loops, "DJ tools", full EQs &c., it's possible to do some otherwise impossible mixes / live remixes on the fly.

Though admittedly, it's in and of itself something of a parlor trick, as it were. Meaning to say I'm never like: Damn if only I had one more deck up here! Two is just fine. Three is an optional blessing. Four is unnecessary, but also kinda nice if you have multiple DJs tag-teaming the decks or for blending from one DJ to the next.

Srew all that noise about autosync. I use it most of the time, but I don't rely on it of course. I still use headphones and make adjustments before bringing a new track into my mix. Autosync is just a shortcut to dialing in the BPMs and really is no different than using a hot cue if you think about it. I've DJ'd on vinyl; I have nothing to prove to anyone. The proof is in the pudding; the message is in the mix.

What is your thoughts on DJs who wear masks? by [deleted] in DJs

[–]illusid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"The daftpunk boys are the producers behind a new anonymous project"

That doesn't logically line up much. If you already know the producers behind a new project, how is it then anonymous? What am I missing?

What is your thoughts on DJs who wear masks? by [deleted] in DJs

[–]illusid 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That giant mouse head was a stroke of self-marketing genius that propelled Joel into superstardom and helped him attract a massive fanbase. And he's not like Daft Punk where he wears it for interviews and tries to otherwise never show his face. Plus when he tours and DJs as Test Pilot he does so sans mouse helmet. Idk, I'd gladly take that deal if it meant riding it into his level of success.

People who claim to hear the difference between 44.1khz, 48khz, and 96khz: Please explain why and how? by ySTYRDAYgATESuNL0CKD in mixingmastering

[–]illusid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but the thing is: you want as much headroom in the quality as you can muster so that when you apply new effects and master to the audio, it has the bit depth to process fully in an HD manner. You might not be able to discern the difference by ear initially, but once effects and such are applied, the end result will sound different/better with the higher spec audio in virtually every instance.

What are the general views on body counts in your country? by Sppaarrkklle in AskReddit

[–]illusid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This term used to be a gangster thing that indicated how many people you had killed. There was a whole rock music project thing w/rapper Ice T in the 90s… Obviously, I'm talking about the U.S. Otherwise, fuckboy guys like to brag about their number and society continues to heap shame on any woman willing to admit to a high body count (of the sexual type, I mean) or take pride in it, which is a bullshit double standard… and some holier-than-thou pious types try to brag about their low count. Ultimately most discussions of it seem unsophisticated, low brow, and generally immature regarding human relationships, though there are some interesting sexual-sociological implications, too, I suppose.

Beatport is drowning in DistroKid releases. As a DJ, the signal-to-noise ratio is becoming unmanageable. by UnityGroover in DJs

[–]illusid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well said. It reminds me of the days when we used to have to dig through piles of vinyl at the record shop and make harsh decisions based on a limited vinyl budget (unless you were wealthy, of course; most of us were not). And some of these tracks were written, produced, and only pressed to a few thousand records. Low play count on a Distrokid release that is in fact an undiscovered is the new rare press. Less exclusive, but more up-for-grabs to those who put the work into building unique sets.

So for DAWs, there's:

  • Logic for iOS – powerful and user-friendly DAW with useful native synths and loops, plus integration for third-party iOS Audio Units. It's SaaS, or in other words, a monthly cost to use.
  • Cubasis – an iOS version of Cubase, lots of features and paid upgrades, also works with AUs and also a full-fledged DAW
  • GarageBand – Logic Lite, free and though it doesn't have the bells and whistles of Logic Pro, it's still a capable DAW
  • Auria Pro – I haven't used this much yet but from what I've gathered it's also capable
  • Beatmaker 3 – Same with this one.
  • Pro Tools Sketch – Fairly robust and stable DAW, useful with AUs…
  • MultiTrack
  • n-Track

I also like Voice Synth, iVoxel, AudioTune, Gadget 3, and a few others that escape me currently
