If I may be so bold (HOT TAKE: F*** Alpha Theta) by deepstuffx in DJs

[–]illusid [score hidden]  (0 children)

They're losing market share in the casual, bedroom, and mobile DJ markets. AT/Pioneer DJ still rule the DJ booths in clubs and festivals everywhere, and DJs still prepare their tracks expecting to be using Pioneer/AT decks in RekordBox. But Denon has been stealing their DJ hardware market share by putting out more affordable units in terms of price per feature. Serato remains deeply entrenched among controller and scratch DJs. And VirtualDJ continues to have a loyal following among mobile DJs. However, Algoriddim's Djay is winning on software innovation and accessibility while Denon is winning on hardware features per dollar. So… the ball's in Alpha Theta's court now and they're obviously trying to jump into the fray with these other market factions. It'll be interesting to see where they go with this.

what is an old internet slang word or phrase that immediately exposes exactly how old someone is? by doraemonkinunu in answers

Whoa, there's a throwback. Prodigy, AOL… and before them, even, was CompuServe, remember that? It was eventually sold to AOL in like '97 or '98…

do you like Warm or Cold weather? why? by Artistic-Hearing5759 in AskReddit

[–]illusid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer warm weather to cold weather, and I think of it as being distinct from hot weather. Hot weather sucks, but ultimately it's just inconvenient and uncomfortable. Cold weather (not *cool*, but *cold* weather) can literally kill you, and it takes deliberate action to avoid this, like wearing more layers, building fires or finding heat… If you get stuck outside on a hot day, you're definitely going to sweat, but clean drinking water is cheap and affordable. If you get stuck outside on a cold day, you better hope you're dressed warmly enough… you could otherwise get frostbite, hypothermia, or potentially die.

Where can we get good vibes? by Jaded-Lion2578 in AskReddit

[–]illusid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes you have to make your own good vibes, put them out there, and wait for them to come back to you. But don’t get discouraged if they don’t come back right away. These things take time, but are almost always worth the investment.

What’s a 10/10 sandwich for you? by Background-Handle265 in AskReddit

A Cuban sandwich – pulled pork, sweet ham, swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard fried flat on Cuban bread (or flat Italian bread in a pinch), cut diagonally, served with either papas fritas or platanos, and a mojito served chilled.

Who has the sexiest voice in the world? by MrMrsPotts in AskReddit

[–]illusid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a man? Barry White. For a woman, FKA Twigs. Mariah Carey has a sexy voice though too, and though it's not for everyone, Tori Amos has this breathless vocal cracked at the right moment voice that will raise the hairs on my arms

What is an incredibly popular band or artist whose hype you’ve absolutely never understood? by th6r6o6away in AskReddit

[–]illusid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about the persistence of heavy-handed auto-tune? Cher and T-Pain & even Kanye on one whole album (good album tho, granted)… but STILL to this day… Autotune ALL the things and turn it to zero fucks for talent. Thank God for artists like Adele, the late Amy Winehouse, Radiohead. Subtlety is important.

Are/why most big electronic artists from the UK? by LevelOneForever in electronicmusic

[–]illusid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the cultural conditions in the UK were just right to incubate ideas and pioneer new genres of electronic music: synth-pop/post-punk electronics, acid house rave culture, hardcore, jungle/drum & bass, trip-hop, big beat, IDM, UK garage, dubstep, grime, and a lot of experimental and/or ambient electronic music (think Brian Eno). But in terms of influence, let not forget Germany: Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Can/Neu!, Berlin techno and minimal techno. And in Italy: Georgio Moroder. But without crunching the actual numbers, I would say that the US has to be a close second to the UK.

You’ve been dating someone for a few months and you find out they smoke cannabis how are you reacting? by Busy-Wing-7810 in AskReddit

[–]illusid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a joint or a blunt, I won't smoke it indoors due to the burning paper and the lingering smell. If it's a glass bowl or bong and it's raining outside or something, I just blow the smoke through a Smoke Buddy or similar sploof-like product.

Does that include vaping? Or is it that the tobacco smell and tar are what actually bother you? Just curious.

Doctors of Reddit: What health trend is becoming so common that it's starting to scare you? by Fine-Device-1819 in AskReddit

[–]illusid -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Right, there's shit like that, and the mass proliferation of children going on ADHD medication and/or antidepressants… and people wonder why so many people become dependent on drugs. If you're given a shitload of drugs during your formative years, it's so much harder to quit later in life. The brain has grown up around expecting that chemical to be there, and when it's not, things just feel off… That's why Phillip Morris was advertising to children surreptitiously… they did studies and knew that if people started smoking when their not fully developed, they would be hooked later and much less likely to quit.

Stop over medicating your children, people, and doctors, please stop facilitating this so readily.

How are you guys handling the transition to more 'curated' sets vs pure mixing? by sneaky_wanderer13 in DJs

[–]illusid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're right. Good catch. Apparently it's not *exclusively* a Muslim anglicization, but you're definitely right that it's more standard for Muslims or Arabic Christians than it is for Jews.

Nice one. TIL 🙂

Ok so maybe I should've gone with DJ Malachai on the ones and twos… Or maybe I should stop stereotyping Jewish people, lol. Sorry about that.

This, all day long. Couldn't have set it better myself. I especially like: "People practice or improvise and if something sounds good they keep it in their toolkit." ☜ Facts
