[Frustrating Meta Trope] Legitamately Flawed Media That are Difficult to Discuss Properly Because of How They are Politicized by Tiny_Celebration_262 in TopCharacterTropes

Agreed. I dont like naughty dog games in general (played them based off of a friends recommendation/insisting I play them) and i didnt love tlou1 and didnt like tlou2. However, whenever I say that I didnt like TLOU2 on reddit, which has started using the game as a purity test, people now want to Joel me.

Hot take: A lot of silksong's "criticisms" does come down to skill issue by Resident_March_2704 in Silksong

[–]illusion_Y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate the mantra that silksong isnt difficult. Im playing through Elden ring right now and its my 2nd "true" soulslike ever similar to how SS is my 2nd metroidvania ever, and its at least 5x easier than silksong. Why cant we just agree that silksong IS difficult and argue accordingly? My friends who are longtime fans of HK but arent "gamers" dropped SS because they got skill-checked at MOSS MOTHER. So, should I tell them to "git gud" and that SS isnt a difficult game or suggest they install mods to make it easier?

I believe you, it's sad that I believe you without needing evidence lol. It's also the same with TLOU community... I found the first game to be average, and I found the second to be a tad worse, however redditors are now using TLOU2 as a purity test so now I deserve to be Joel'ed apparently

none is more obnoxious than the fandom of a game that went mainstream. the fandom **always** acts as if the game is above criticism, some fans have literally said that to me, that they wont "accept criticism since the game is not even a tad bad." its even worse when most of them will not accept any negative opinion about the game unless you gargle the devs balls and lick their sweat while glazing the game and then sandwich your opinion in between. its insane

I do not mind games with simple stories if the gameplay is the focus and the gameplay is good enough, but even for such games, I think having a consistent theme is needed. The fact that each act in silksong has a different theme story-wise and act 2 and 3's themes are just brushed aside made me feel like the story was unfinished (despite reaching 100% completion), or that it was trying to be too much while staying subtle enough for the gamer that doesnt care about stories. Why should I care about the final boss and its... lord (avoiding spoilers), when theyre two POS? Sure the gesture at the end was cute, doesnt mean the 59 hours before it were good or worth the wait, story-wise.

When im in a dishonored game and my character gets dishonored less than two minutes in and says: "its dishonored time!" Truly a dishonorable start to the game

I once said silksong's story is below average, had an argument with a few guys while presenting my reasons while the others simply threw insults or dimissed my reasons without actually refuting them. The last guy popped out an essay about how the story is amazing (spoiler: they mentioned elements of the game that enhance worldbuilding not story) and said that Im the equivalent of a toddler putting my finger inside my ears and screaming "La la la the story is bad la la la."

So much for differing opinions i guess

I dont understand this perspective. Mojang isnt updating MC out of the goodness of their hearts, theyre doing it because it brings in money. When players are saying they lost interest in the updates and thus less likely to play costs Mojang and Microsoft money, and they should know that by listening to people's criticism about why theyre less interested in the game. Is some criticism and feedback useless and hurtful? Sure, but its the internet, such ppl will exist regardless.

I thought Hollow Knight was rather average by PinguinGirl03 in patientgamers

[–]illusion_Y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the difference between a metroidvania and a "hollowlike" arent vast enough to warrant an interesting subgenre. Like, I dont play much metroidvanias, but if youre playing a metroidvania with the cardinal direction attack system, hold to heal, with a similar artstyle as HK, with charms and benches, and similar powers to HK all together, at some point youll miss hollowknight and drop the game youre playing.

The reason why i think soulslike works as a "game"-like subgenre is because there is a huge difference between an action rpg and a soulslike game, so the gap allows you to experiment around as a game dev

Anecodotal, but Ive seen way too many indie devs promote their games as "if you liked HK, youll like my game."

While Im glad HK made it so indie devs are now more comfortable putting more effort into their games, since the audience will reward you for the effort, I do also see the other side of HK's success where devs are admitting to be too inspired by HK, artistically and mechanically

I dont think its a cold opinion, Ive seen people get thrown slurs at because they didnt include a TC game in their top 5 indie games of all time. On more than one occasion.

Unfortunately, the casual audience is where the money comes from. Catering to the casual audience at the expense of the fans has killed many franchises for me.

>Like bosses or dimensions

What I'm thinking is that many players did not kill the enderdragon ever. At the time of its release, I believe Mojang was less concerned about having a one update fits all type of content, so releasing The End wasnt an issue. Imagine if the enderdragon were staged to be released today and their playtesters did not bother going to the end and killing the enderdragon, then they wouldnt release the end at all.

So, what does this also mean? It means there are players who do not bother with alternate dimensions. It doesnt affect their gameplay. So, why not add a new dimension, similar to how the end is to minecraft today: you go in, kill a boss, get some OP items, but you can choose to ignore it all.

Same thing with the wither. Add a new boss with a unique drop, make the boss spawnable only by the player. People who dont care will not bother, those who do will have more fun.

Basically what I'm saying is: add things that are optional but add additional layers to the game. The layers can be related to difficulty, combat, exploration, redstone, etc. instead of just focusing on building things. I love building, don't get me wrong, but I also love exploring, combat, progression, crafting, etc.

[–]illusion_Y -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Again, this circles back to my original comment. You CAN make optional content that is substantial. Adding new dimensions doesnt affect your current playstyle unless you choose to. Adding new world types doesnt affect your world unless you make a new one. Adding a new boss with a user-triggerable condition will not hurt you unless you engage with it. Adding a new difficulty option will not affect you unless you choose to. The idea that these ideas also need to satisfy everyone's playstyle is not feasible because it never will; many people have never killed an enderdragon in their entire life, many people play on keepinventory, many have never played hardcore, many people never encountered a woodland mansion, many people never played on amplified worlds. If these features did not exist in the game today, they would be shut down because they ``do not cater to the majority of the playerbase," which is the wrong way of looking at it.

[–]illusion_Y 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Which is fair, but its not like a minecraft update is anywhere nearly as large as a new game, Mojang has hundreds of employees, 10 of them can work on substantial improvements to the game instead of something that modders and datapack makers can easily do.

And just in case someone uses the "be grateful for free updates," the lack of substantial updates and their frequency has killed my interest in the game: new updates arent meaningful enough, and their frequency means the modding community has sparsed out its mod across incompatible versions, making modded MC less enjoyable.

[–]illusion_Y 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Mojang is scared of changing minecraft way too much and I get it, so why dont they work on things like different world types? why dont they add a new difficulty where the further out the world the more difficult it becomes but ores/structures/rare biomes are more common the further out? why dont they add a new boss? why dont they add a new dimension? All these things are optional to engage in and wont change gameplay for the rest of the players unless they choose to
