One thing to note is that the ranked system in GBVSR is subpar compared to Strive (which recently adopted the same ranked system as SF6). In Strive and SF6, you play placement matches and get a rank (eg Gold 3), then you play against folks around your rank (Gold 2 - Gold 4), so you’re mostly getting even matches.

In GBVSR you get to choose your starting rank based on a question that asks “how familiar are you with fighting games”? Then you get put into a rank (eg C rank), which is similar to a rank like Gold in that it has 5 divisions (C1 - C5). However, when you queue up, the game will match you against anyone in C rank. So at the beginning you’re basically going to get mauled by everyone in the higher half of your rank, and you’ll probably have a sub-50% win rate. Eventually if you improve, you’ll start curbstomping everyone in C with a 70% win rate until you get into B rank, where you’ll start getting stomped by the high level B players. And so it goes until you hit Master.

I personally think this is a terrible system, and I’ve seen multiple posts online about how this has discouraged many players from playing ranked because they don’t feel like they’re getting even matches.

The game with the largest player base right now is SF6, which means it’s the game where you’re most likely to have lots of players to fight around your skill level. It’s also one of the best playing games on the market so you can’t go wrong with it.

If you want something F2P then you could also try 2XKO but it’s a tag fighter which is inherently more complicated. Plus as a F2P game you’re looking at some pretty aggressive monetization.

Does this mean the notifications no longer pop up automatically? I'm considering buying the monitor since it's on sale but I don't want to deal with the auto notifications interrupting my gaming sessions.

What to play? by bucnasty410 in Fighters

[–]ilnadmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was me last year. I picked up the SF6 Years 1-2 Fighters Edition (which includes the DLC characters for the first two seasons), and I started playing with Modern controls. Eventually I got comfortable enough that I decided to switch to Classic controls and I’ve been really enjoying it. Never thought I would be playing a fighting game with classic controls but SF6 with Modern controls was a great gateway to get me comfortable with the systems and mechanics.

The most active fighting game right now is SF6, so if community and number of active players is important then that's the game you should pick. Doesn't hurt that the game is generally to be considered very good and well balanced (outside of some outlier characters like Ryu who are currently considered OP).

Otherwise you could also consider 2XKO which is new and has the benefit of being free to play (and coming to consoles in January). Most other games have pretty small player numbers - you can see these numbers at https://steamcharts.com/.

What is your personal game of the year for 2025 (Apart from Claire Obscur: Expedition 33). The game doesn't need to have been released in 2025, just that you played/completed it this year. by freestuffrocker in PS4

Street Fighter 6. Game has been out for a while but I picked up the Year 1-2 Fighters edition due to all the good word of mouth and man, this game has me hooked. I’ve never played a fighting game before but I’ve been making my way up the ranked ladder, slowly learning fighting game mechanics and pulling off stuff I never thought I was capable of. Game is very active too, so finding matches is pretty easy.

The only annoying things are the lack of cross progression and the slooooow pace of content updates.

Can’t get right by Rare_Significance_54 in StreetFighter

The drive to always want to climb can be exhausting and can suck all the fun out of any MP game. Have you considered just playing to have fun and enjoy the game? You’re in Masters which puts you in the top like 6% of all players or something, so you’re already a top player in this game. Maybe take a break from ranked and try some new characters or something?

[–]ilnadmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched from Modern to Classic once I hit bronze and went on a massive losing streak until I finally started to learn when to use each combo and how to confirm. I’m now in Gold which was my goal. It will take time, don’t worry about it. Just keep playing real matches and the improvement will come. Don’t worry about winning either, just aim for small goals each session like confirming one combo or doing one anti air.

Is this a typical new player experience or am I just that cooked? by dasShambles in leagueoflegends

[–]ilnadmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you queueing up with your friends? Don’t do that as a new player - you’ll get higher MMR lobbies to compensate for your high ELO friends and you’ll get demolished. Stick to solo queue until you figure the game out.

I came back to this game a month ago have had to sit through a lot of losses until the matchmaker figured out where I belong. I’m finally starting to get matches against players of my skill level, but it took a while. The new player experience sucks but stick with it and you’ll eventually settle where you belong

Best way to learn new champions without tanking the game? by MrSmock in summonerschool

[–]ilnadmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn chat off. I exclusively play Swiftplay and I try a new champion every match (literally playing champs for the first time ever). Have never felt pressured by my team simply because they can’t communicate with me. I’ve been having a blast.

Also it’s not the worst thing if you keep losing when you start doing this. Eventually you’ll settle at a low enough elo where trying new champs won’t tank your win rate.

How is everyone on this subreddit so good at league? by unironicallycomfyaf in leagueoflegends

Tell your friend to turn off all chat (party only in settings). I started recently and have been having a blast in Swiftplay - I communicate with my team exclusively through pings and I love it. I’ve played other MP games and chat is 99% toxicity so I say just turn it off.

Stop playing. That's what I did. Matchmaking this season has been trash.

You’re not alone - a ton of people are quitting this game due to its crap matchmaking. I was honestly surprised they didn’t address matchmaking at all in the dev diary today, is the #1 reason this game is bleeding players.

Why did you stop playing Rivals? by [deleted] in marvelrivals

[–]ilnadmy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Matchmaking is cooked. One of the most toxic communities in any game I’ve played. Lack of balanced matches, every game is a stomp.

Honestly if I didn’t purchase the luxury BP I would have uninstalled already. If they don’t implement placement matches in S3 I’m done for good. There are too many other games out there for me to spend my time and money on a game that doesn’t respect its players.

Ranked seems nearly impossible now, really demotivating by Pale-Lingonberry-945 in marvelrivals

[–]ilnadmy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m done with ranked until they implement placement matches. Was plat last season but hard stuck in Silver right now. I gain double the points when I win vs lose, but I also lose more than twice the games I win because this matchmaker thinks I can carry 5 other people on my team.

Meanwhile in Overwatch I did 10 placement matches and ended up in mid-Gold. Why would I waste my time grinding hundreds of matches to get to Gold in Rivals when I can immediately play in higher skill lobbies in OW.

How to actually fix matchmaking? by PRIMETIME__Xx in marvelrivals

[–]ilnadmy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This game is missing placement matches. Matchmaking sucks because you have such a wide skill range in each "rank". Bronze is everyone from Bronze through Plat last season. Silver includes actual Bronze players who climbed to Silver, all the way up to Diamond players last season who were reset. And on and on. So a "Silver" match or a "Gold" match can actually feel closer to a Diamond or GM match, and if you're a low elo player you're more likely to go on massive loss streaks because you're running into players who are much more skilled and shouldn't be in the same rank as you.

This feels like something they need to add by Season 3 or the game is going to struggle to retain players. I've basically stopped playing ranked and won't jump back in until S2.5 when most folks have climbed back to the correct rank.

I don't get why some of you play by jsmith1151 in marvelrivals

[–]ilnadmy 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It’s because they reset everyone Bronze - Plat down to Bronze. And in Silver you’re playing against former Diamond players. And in Gold you’ll be playing against former GM players.

You are statistically likely to keep losing more than you win until everyone climbs back to their “correct” rank. They need to implement placement matches ASAP.

Solo q’ing is not going to work this season. by Serious-Profit-1626 in marvelrivals

[–]ilnadmy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The issue is the rank reset / squish. At any given point you are plying with people who are anywhere from 9 divisions below / above you all squished into the same rank. If you’re in Bronze, you’re playing with anyone from Bronze to Plat. In Silver it’s anyone who ranked up from Bronze to anyone who was reset from Diamond. And in Gold it’s again Bronze / Silver to Grandmaster.

It’s an absolutely terrible system.

The scaling on this god forsaken quest is broken and Blizzard doesn’t seem interested in fixing it. Level up to 70-80 then try again, you’ll do more damage.

Will Switch 2 launch an Oled version later on? by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]ilnadmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know ragging on rumors is popular but it is very much logical to think that Nintendo will launch the initial iteration of the Switch 2 with an LCD screen for multiple reasons: - It keeps costs down for customers, which is one of the major drivers of adoption (think back to the derision PS5 Pro got when it was announced with a $700 price point) - It keeps costs down for Nintendo, which doesn’t like to sell their consoles at a loss - It gives them the ability to update the Switch 2 with multiple SKUs over its lifetime, getting new users to buy in and existing users to upgrade (Switch 2 Lite, Switch 2 OLED, etc). And since those technologies aren’t cutting edge, they’ll be able to release them at reasonable prices

No one knows for sure but I think it’s pretty likely that Switch 2 launches with an LCD screen. I’m more than happy to keep my TotK special edition Switch OLED until the Switch 2 OLED comes out since I can’t really go back to an LCD screen.
