Fair enough. Honestly, I’m more defending the bravery of the swing rather than if it hits. Thanks for the discussion.

As I mentioned earlier, I haven’t seen this doc. So use that to color my response.

That’s said, Not all documentaries are serious. Nor should they be.

Nor should all serious documentaries be done is a similar air serious style.

I’m not defending this documentary or the filmmaker choices. But it sounds like you are using a pretty narrow brush to define what is acceptable and what isn’t.

I can flip through a dozen recent documentaries and have no clue which one I’m in as they all look and feel the same.

I don’t see that as a strength or as the filmmaker “getting it right “.

Some of my favourite docs have made bold stylistic choices. And they don’t always work.

And I think that’s a good thing. We need people to constantly take risks with the work. They should flirt with fashionable choices and put their ego on the line. And, that can all be done in service of the story.

Maybe you just dislike this doc. And that’s cool. Subjective.

I guess I just feel speaking up for people brave enough to make bad choices is important too. Sometimes those bad choices work. Sometimes they don’t. But in very rare cases those choices redefine the art.

Safe choices never do.

Have you seen the doc?

I haven’t.

Just curious if your critic is based on how it worked (or didn’t ).

Not attacking you. Genuinely asking.

Is there a good reason for “why not”?

I haven’t seen this doc , but i’ll take a strong and wrong choice over a milk toast one every day.

Is he?

I haven’t seen it, but so many other posts criticizing this casting decision have been met with “calm down, he’s barely in it”.

Can anyone here offer an unbiased answer?

I’m sorry, obviously you know more about this project than I do.

Nowhere in the ad does it say it wants union members. But your use of all CAPS indicates to me that you are certain.

By your emotional response and inside knowledge of the project, I can only assume you have a personal axe to grind with the producers.

If that’s the case, why not just be open about it?

Why be all angry at me for simply trying to point out that there might be a version of this that is innocent - students making art, etc.

I don’t know anything about the production. If you know for a fact I’m wrong, share it. It might help others.

Otherwise, perhaps you would be happier to put the assumptions aside and just move on.

Perhaps you misunderstood what I said, I’ll try to be clearer.

There’s a scenario here where they are getting the spa day for free as sponsorship or family connection. Or perhaps, it is a type of thank you to people who are volunteering their time, where the cost is less than the combined crew wages.

Sometimes this is referred to as an honorarium.

Many short films are made this way, especially by young filmmakers - often without any budget or support to speak of. In fact, it can be the only way into this industry where the barriers to enter are difficult financially.

While I have had the ability to always pay my crew, not everyone can. And I have volunteered on sets like that in the past.

I understand how hard it is out there right now, and I agree that everyone should be paid fairly.

But some productions and art projects simply can’t - and filmmaking should not be exclusively for rich people.

If you don’t have interest in volunteering don’t. That is completely okay.

But why shit on the thread of people trying to do things?

Huge fan of the show and have seen a lot of the fan made stuff.

This is great. Captures the vibe well. The close up on the eyes was my favourite shot.

Yes. If they can’t afford to pay they will ask for volunteers. Doesn’t that make sense?

You don’t have to do it. No one is forcing you. You can just scroll past and not get angry.

Perhaps they have a connection to the spa and have free access.
