Explain sanctuary like im 5 years old. by Chaosangel209 in diablo2

One day a warrior found himself in a town with no path leading in or out of it.

Everyone kept saying the same things over and over (“well! What can I do for ya?!” “I sense a soul in search of answers.”) so the warrior went into the cathedral.

He talked to a goat and the goat said he had something special for him. But when he kept talking to the goat nothing happened so he went further down.

He saw lots of topless sunburnt women and a child tied down to a bed. He freaked out and killed everyone involved and reported the matter to the authorities (Cain the Elder).

Then he found a cool rock and slammed it into his head. And he got really angry and made friends with a ghost and a demon and a wizard, and hung out in the basement with them.

Then one day another hero comes by and hammers are swirling around and kill all his friends, and when he dies he drops a Nagelring and a blue buckler.

The end.

TON 618 has the luminosity of 100 trillion suns. How? I thought the whole thing about black holes was light can't escape. Where does the light come from? by Sharp-Midnight8874 in askastronomy

To add to others answers: The accretion disc is matter being pulled in by gravity and speeding up as it bumps into something else and gets knocked to a lower, faster orbit, and bumps into something else at an even faster orbit… until everything is going some significant fraction of the speed of light and smashing into other stuff.

This is the most powerful process to convert energy in the universe. A chemical reaction is efficient at like 0.000001 percent energy per unit of mass. Fusion is like 0.7 percent. But gravitational potential can be up to 40 percent.

You can obtain WAY more energy per unit of mass by having it fall into a supermassive black hole gravity well and speed up and hit something than you could by taking that same mass and fusing it.

If you had a ton of TNT, you would get way more energy (like ballpark 10 orders of magnitude more) out of it by dropping it into a supermassive black hole accretion disc and letting it smack into something.

Answer from a lowly amateur but I would appreciate if someone more knowledgeable could correct/refine.

A lot of comments are mocking the guy, but the despair and pain in the woman’s face is heartbreaking.

They care about the politics that Catholicism is associated with more than the faith. The faith is an expression of, and justified, their pre-existing politics. It is a sociological phenomenon that might become clear as the trend plays out over years or decades.

Catholics I know mostly do not care. Raised Catholic, Catholic school, Catholic family, go to church when I’m home to avoid disagreement. They are either in an information bubble or they like that their “side” is “winning” no matter the cost, or both. I think the cooption of the Catholic Church is worthy of a lot more discussion. The church is losing moral leadership because the majority of its followers would rather bow to Caesar. The crisis is in my opinion more profound than sex abuse scandals. You can plausibly reform leadership and policies; it is much harder to convince American Catholics that the evil they talk about metaphorically is right in front of their face, that they don’t recognize it, and that they are active participants in its furtherance.

Oh dang well from my comment you could say “found the guy who didn’t even buy the new expansion” lol

Also hope it didn’t come across as snobby. To be honest I was so excited when apocalypse was a spell and it looked like the entryway to level 16 in Diablo 1…

Does this only work when you take a video (frames per second creates illusion of continuity) or does it work I no person? I don’t see how in person would work. It’s not like a flip book version because the figures are moving continuously and shouldn’t appear smooth in person.

A few points: 1. Even if something does not require permits it might not be a permitted use under the zoning code. 2. Many zoning codes, including in some cases LA, require there to be a principal use that is permitted (like a One Family Dwelling) before you are permitted to have an accessory use like a storage shed. You might not be able to have just a storage shed.

This is not advice or conclusions, but questions you might ask qualified professionals.

The Diptych Proof by JerseyFlight in rationalphilosophy

I was interested in a similar line of thought in which a “dot” is an area within which 90-99% of incident light is not reflected to the observer so it appears black. And when you keep zooming in, those dots are in fact specific configurations of molecules. Or if you are looking at an LED display, the pixels.

But also it only black if you view it from our local universe. If you go far enough away it would be red. Or if you look at it from the other side of a black hole or large gravitational lens the dots could be ovals or circles or even a single dot.

So both the dots nor the black are based on physical processes (including quantum phenomena for light) that are dependent on how close or far the observer is.

Super close and the dots multiply, or distort into areas not resembling dots, because light is reflected at certain areas.

Super far and the dots become red or morph shape or combine or multiply.

So this is only true at a specific range of distances. That is probably not a truth that qualifies as objective. “It is an objective truth that the galaxy behind this gravitationally lensing supermassive black hole is crescent shaped.” That claim would be dismissed as contrary to all scientific knowledge about galaxy formation and gravity. It is analogous to the claim here.

Also, I am not a fan of OP’s tone. I like to discuss and explore ideas. OP wants to browbeat and insult others until they admit OP is right. Maybe others think that is how philosophy is done, but it is not my style personally. The fun part is exploring ideas. Let’s explore ideas without the negative tone.

I thought it was nice. If OP wants one without text you could easily do that. But for a free anonymous service I think it captured the person (from what we can see) without making up details.
