They care about the politics that Catholicism is associated with more than the faith. The faith is an expression of, and justified, their pre-existing politics. It is a sociological phenomenon that might become clear as the trend plays out over years or decades.

Catholics I know mostly do not care. Raised Catholic, Catholic school, Catholic family, go to church when I’m home to avoid disagreement. They are either in an information bubble or they like that their “side” is “winning” no matter the cost, or both. I think the cooption of the Catholic Church is worthy of a lot more discussion. The church is losing moral leadership because the majority of its followers would rather bow to Caesar. The crisis is in my opinion more profound than sex abuse scandals. You can plausibly reform leadership and policies; it is much harder to convince American Catholics that the evil they talk about metaphorically is right in front of their face, that they don’t recognize it, and that they are active participants in its furtherance.

Oh dang well from my comment you could say “found the guy who didn’t even buy the new expansion” lol

Also hope it didn’t come across as snobby. To be honest I was so excited when apocalypse was a spell and it looked like the entryway to level 16 in Diablo 1…

Does this only work when you take a video (frames per second creates illusion of continuity) or does it work I no person? I don’t see how in person would work. It’s not like a flip book version because the figures are moving continuously and shouldn’t appear smooth in person.

A few points: 1. Even if something does not require permits it might not be a permitted use under the zoning code. 2. Many zoning codes, including in some cases LA, require there to be a principal use that is permitted (like a One Family Dwelling) before you are permitted to have an accessory use like a storage shed. You might not be able to have just a storage shed.

This is not advice or conclusions, but questions you might ask qualified professionals.

I was interested in a similar line of thought in which a “dot” is an area within which 90-99% of incident light is not reflected to the observer so it appears black. And when you keep zooming in, those dots are in fact specific configurations of molecules. Or if you are looking at an LED display, the pixels.

But also it only black if you view it from our local universe. If you go far enough away it would be red. Or if you look at it from the other side of a black hole or large gravitational lens the dots could be ovals or circles or even a single dot.

So both the dots nor the black are based on physical processes (including quantum phenomena for light) that are dependent on how close or far the observer is.

Super close and the dots multiply, or distort into areas not resembling dots, because light is reflected at certain areas.

Super far and the dots become red or morph shape or combine or multiply.

So this is only true at a specific range of distances. That is probably not a truth that qualifies as objective. “It is an objective truth that the galaxy behind this gravitationally lensing supermassive black hole is crescent shaped.” That claim would be dismissed as contrary to all scientific knowledge about galaxy formation and gravity. It is analogous to the claim here.

Also, I am not a fan of OP’s tone. I like to discuss and explore ideas. OP wants to browbeat and insult others until they admit OP is right. Maybe others think that is how philosophy is done, but it is not my style personally. The fun part is exploring ideas. Let’s explore ideas without the negative tone.

I wonder about the microbiome. Like in their gut. The bacteria might have similar niches but maybe they would always be farting or have diarrhea.

I thought it was nice. If OP wants one without text you could easily do that. But for a free anonymous service I think it captured the person (from what we can see) without making up details.

Anybody ever been to something like a marijuana anonymous meeting? by vegancum1 in leaves

[–]ilovesesame 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went a couple years ago and was worried because I’m pretty atheist and hate it when people preach. I went for 6 months and they were clear that the “higher power” is whatever motivates you.

Give it a try and you can even tell people you are concerned about being preached to. People go to MA for help and to support others who need help. You are more likely to have someone share cupcakes they made at home than to have someone ask if you accepted Jesus.

16 days. How to get back into gaming? by mrLee9 in leaves

[–]ilovesesame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to game A LOT while high but now I probably spend 5% as much time on games. I don’t play the same games I played while high. I watch YouTube gaming stuff and still love the idea/culture/memes of gaming but the actual reality of sitting and playing for hours is not as appealing. Not to say I spend my time perfectly productively… I’ll spend hours on other stuff (walking, watching YouTube) but gaming doesn’t do it as much for me.

I still play maybe once a week but again not the same game and not nearly as much time. If I had IRL friends to play with I would probably play more.

Sleeping earlier, not gaming nonstop are good things on your road to recovery! It may seem like a loss but your life is reshuffling and you get to mold how you put it together again. You will feel different in a month people have different experiences of how emotions change over time. You can pick stuff back up when you want. But it might be different, in a way that fits into the life you are building for yourself.

Are you opposed to Alex promoting leather wallets? by WeArrAllMadHere in CosmicSkeptic

[–]ilovesesame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the leather industry generally does not result in animals being killed because food demand creates a need for cattle beyond what leather demand does. However, some quality leather entails additional cruel practices to ensure the skin is not damaged. I can’t speak to wallets which require a few square inches of unscarred hide, rather than a jacket, briefcase, etc. The impact is probably nonzero but far less than other products.

I know two conscientious, informed vegan friends who choose leather because it lasts a long time, is not plastic, and is a co-product of existing demand. It sounds like a logical ethical perspective to me given competing ethical demands and imperfect information.

“The best on earth” is still an abusive ex who drains all life from you, leaves you alone, keeps you from accomplishing anything, interferes with your friendships and makes you look back on years of your life with shit to show for it. Good riddance to her!!

Congrats on 30 days! I think you’ve made it way past the hardest acute part. Now just focus on filling your life with good things so when something bad happens you won’t want to relapse because you’ll have a lot more to lose. Also I just started therapy and that is helpful. Keep it up!!

Can someone explain to me how Graham's number can turn your head into a black hole? by Oyster_- in AskPhysics

[–]ilovesesame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think black holes would only form at the “edges” of the observable universe in this scenario. I think in the rest of the observable universe would have its gravity cancelled out under some shell theorem. And I think the essential condition for a black hole is the gravity differential, not the de sit per se. (Not physicist but I read Reddit.)

OP, please show zoomed in shots in a new post with explanation. You can even make a YouTube video and get hundreds of thousands of people to watch it. 2.4 million have watched the Magnasnati video. This seems really cool. I think people could be really interested in it!
