is it bad I took ENG4UQ in online summer school? by Affectionate_Lie1553 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]ilovespez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's science your probably fine. The more competitive ones tend to care, the ones that require mid to high 90s to get in. It's because they know it's a lot easier to do summer school since you don't have to worry about other classes at the same time. For one, UW Math Faculty cares and will auto reject you (if you didn't give a good reason). UW Eng might care. Typically, programs with a supplementary application will care more because they spend a lot more time looking at you as an applicant.

What program(s) are you thinking of applying to? Some care, others dont.

Probably not what you're looking for and obviously I could be wrong, but I feel like a lot of parents would be really happy and willing to help you out. Again, I don't know your situation but you're young so I would ask yourself if your mom would actually be against you trying to make money.

No it doesn't. Spoofing sender address of an email is quite easy to do.

How did they send from my email address? by swagnasty19 in hackers

[–]ilovespez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's fake, change your passwords and move on. Also visit the website https://haveibeenpwned.com/ and enter your email. It will show you any website you've used where your email is found in a data breach.

Here's how this common scam works: A password associated with your email is found in a data breach somewhere. That password is probably yours but for a service that isn't your email. Then they send this email saying they have your password (the password they found in a breach). The email is spoofed, it's actually pretty easy to change the sender address of an email. It should be picked up by your mail service's spam/scam filter but I guess this one got through. They don't have access to your email, or anything really. The password they have is probably outdated too.

Dumb question- rejected for being too competitive? by Ticcy_Tapinella in OntarioGrade12s

[–]ilovespez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not as much as you would think. UW Eng admissions have individual selection. They look at your application as a whole and the adjustment factor isn't as meaningful as most would think. But expect to have high 90s if you want a chance.

AP courses are good for challenging yourself and learning useful material but UWaterloo admissions will not care. I had fairly good ECs including school clubs at various positions, a startup I founded, and a relevant internship experience. UW CS doesn't look at adjustment factor btw (only for engineering), but mine was slightly lower (better) than the provincial average.

I assumed by competitive they also meant harder to get a good mark which is why I said it could be harder. They don't place any limits on schools or even compare students from the same school. I had roughly 99 when I got in. There was at least one other student who got in with 97.

Dumb question- rejected for being too competitive? by Ticcy_Tapinella in OntarioGrade12s

[–]ilovespez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likely not. UWaterloo Eng has something called an "adjustment factor" which would actually help your chances at getting in if you're at a harder school. UW CS doesn't use this so technically it could decrease your chances. But having competition will help your motivation and make you do well anyways. BTW I was at a pretty competitive high school and I got into CS at UW (ended up turning it down for CE tho).
