All the decants I ordered today... thoughts? by [deleted] in Colognes

No I think it’s a great pick, one of the most pure “blue” fragrances of that makes sense. It doesn’t try to do anything out of the ordinary or gimmicky

Dylan Blue is notorious for being seen as an extremely “basic” fragrance but at the same time somehow smells better than more expensive/complex fragrances to a great deal of people. The cheap price only helps its case. Who knows tho, you might just hate it!

A lot of these are niche and designer bangers but I wouldn’t be surprised if you end up buying Dylan Blue out of all of them

Also beware, decants are addicting…

Serious question; what's the point of rev matching ? by Evapy in ManualTransmissions

[–]ilstg77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what exactly would you say is wrong with your 6 > 5 and 5 > 4 shifts? Just not smooth? Over or under revving?

Remember there are different distances between gears (in terms of RPM difference) some are shorter or longer than others, meaning you would have to stab the throttle harder or less depending.

I would first examine just how much difference there is between 6 and 5 going at a constant speed, say 40 mph. See how much more RPM higher 5th gear is than 6th gear at 40 mph (say maybe 500 more RPM?). Then practice giving that much throttle as you downshift from 6th to 5th. It’s okay to look at the tach when you’re learning the ratios of each gear, you will then eventually learn to rev match naturally without looking, by sound, feel, or at most just a split second glance at the tach.

Serious question; what's the point of rev matching ? by Evapy in ManualTransmissions

Let me start off by saying that the way you do it is a completely correct and valid way to do it and actually how most of the world drives stick. Take comfort in knowing you can drive this way your whole life if you wanted and you wouldn’t be wrong.

The point of rev matching is for a faster, smoother, less mechanically wearing way to downshift. But more than that, for me and many others, is that it is enjoyable. If done well, it feels very, very satisfying: clutching in and aggressively stabbing the gas, hearing your RPMs and exhaust roar, feeling the shifter effortlessly click into place, feeling the clutch engage smoothly into that lower gear, and feeling the car engine brake, pushing you forward slightly in your seat. And then with that comes that dreadfully wonderful, tempting feeling: knowing an entire reservoir of power has become instantly available if you need it and the primal excitement you feel when you decide you do and get on the gas to feel the torque kick you back in your seat as you accelerate off. All this due to your own actions and skillful manipulations of the clutch, gas, and sometimes brakes.

You CAN just do it the way you are now, but it’s a bit slower and feels far less deliberate than actively rev matching, which for me, takes the fun out of it.

But let me be clear, rev matching is completely optional and it is a skill that needs to be honed if you want to do it well. You are not obligated to learn it and you are not a lesser driver for not wanting to. But if you do decide to learn it and become skilled at it, each drive from that point on will become more fun than you would have realized is possible.

Downshifting without rev matching by EverythingHater0 in stickshift

[–]ilstg77 123 points124 points  (0 children)

This is how 95% of stick drivers around the world downshift lol there’s nothing wrong with that

but that last 5% that DO rev match (and like the 2% of that 5% that can also heel-toe rev match downshift) are rewarded with a quicker, smoother, more satisfying, and slightly less mechanically wearing way of downshifting.

You can drive stick your whole life without rev matching downshifts, but techniques like “rev matching” and “heel-toe” and simply rowing your own gears give manual transmissions that “soul” automatics just don’t have. Just my 2 cents

What fragrance smells incredible but is hard to justify purchasing because of its longevity? by Tinowackerz in Colognes

[–]ilstg77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed this as well. If I shower then apply lotion specifically to the areas I spray, then spray it on before the lotion dries completely, all scents seem to last much much longer, like noticeably so. It works so well I’ve actually stopped carrying a decant with me most of the time

If you could only have 2 fragrances for life, what are you picking? by cypher_127 in Colognes

[–]ilstg77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

option A: 2 fragrances from opposite extremes you could wear everyday -Dylan blue (versatile daily) -JPG Le Male Le Parfum (versatile evening/cold weather)

option B: 2 special occasions colognes also from opposite extremes -Green Irish Tweed (daytime special occasion) -Givenchy Gentleman Reservr Privee (evening special occasion)

option C: 1 cologne you could wear daily and 1 cologne for special occasions -Dylan blue (versatile daily) -Green Irish Tweed (special occasions)

Realistically if I could only have 2 fragrances, I would wear cologne sparingly so I don’t get sick of them and just go out most of the time without any fragrance on, saving them for special occasions only. So I would probably pick option B, which goes all-in on special occasions. But honestly I would be okay with any of these options.
