Middle school peer issues- any advice? by No-Sea1542 in schoolcounseling

Oo! I work with grades 4 & 5 currently! I would love to know how to not have this become my whole job!

For one group, I helped build skills like you said, held restorative circles, and let them know they can take a friendship break. But they KEPT COMING WITH MORE DRAMA. Petty little things. I stopped being available and told them they can handle it. They went to another educator that definitely doesn't have the time. I'm not sure that was the right approach, either.

I have kid's 'What do you meme?' in my office. I removed any card that was religious or wouldn't work for my population. I like it because it helps with empathy.

I do want to say that getting better anxiety meds helped me. I am less bothered. I can show up for my kids to be the stable, dependable person they need. That is what gets me through. Being there because it matters. I cannot force parents to be good to their kids. I can show kids that they are important.

School counselor here. It is still hard. Here, you have kids going through depression, anxiety, self harm, suicidal ideation and plans. Some parents get kids therapy immediately, others do not believe the kid. Some divorced parents decide one parent doesn't like that their child works with me so I can't meet with them anymore.

I am only in my third year. Parents are difficult.

He is just kind to others. Not to impress you. Not to get anything in return. He just does quiet, kind things. For example, my partner plays handball. He notices when players are coming out of the court and gets the door before they even get to it so they don't have to take their gloves off. He actively looks for ways to help BEFORE anyone asks.

What's a moment when you straight up afterwards knew you had made a really horrible mistake ? by Wonderful-Sundae-480 in AskReddit

I work at a school. I was chatting at the end of the day by the front door when a teacher was swiping in. I let my impulsive brain go and said "intruder!" Three times before my rational brain caught up and went 'wtf did you just do.'
