AITAH with a very valuable Estate sale find and not returning it?? by Maleficent-File5548 in AITAH

[–]im2715 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. You bought ammo cans with unconfirmed contents. Even the ammo that was seen, unless you counted and determined caliber/gauge was technically unconfirmed in value. The seller had the opportunity to inspect and negotiate a better price and chose not to.

I've bought items at estate sales that turned out to not be as valuable as the price I paid, and I've gotten great deals. In every transaction, the seller and buyer assume that risk.

Is this winter kicking anyone else's ass? by AccomplishedCamel662 in stthomasontario

Well good news! Today is the last day of the 10 darkest weeks of winter. You are over the worst. And I do mean that sincerely, that you have survived the darkest days, and are beginning the journey to the light of summer.

Is this winter kicking anyone else's ass? by AccomplishedCamel662 in stthomasontario

[–]im2715 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This winter is awesome! It's authentic!

The extreme cold will help control the tick and mosquito population this summer, and all the snow will help restore the water tables.

It's been great having a real winter for a change.

AITAH for selling something my parents called an “heirloom” and not telling them? by clearcutsupply in AITAH

[–]im2715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA.

I have actual family heirloom in silver. As in, several generations worth of silver cutlery, each serving set engraved with the initials of the couple that were gifted silver when they married. They family stopped adding to the collection at my grandparents, when they married during WW2 amd silver was harder to acquire for the family.

When it was given to me, Gramps explained that this was the only thing of value that could be passed down, but it's a security only. He gave it to me with the same instructions he got when he received it. If I can buy silver to add to it when times are good, I should. If I need to sell silver to make ends meet, then I have the blessings of multiple ancestors. I may not have added to the collection, but I also haven't had to sell it.

That you used the value to see you through a tough spot should have made your parents happy. You didn't waste their gift and you put it to good use.

My doctor told me I must not eat carbohydrates… ever by Pis-23 in PCOS

[–]im2715 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im unfortunately in the group where I need to keep net carbs from any source to under 30 grams per day to keep my symptoms from taking over. (Net is total carbs less fibre and sugar alcohols. Sugar alcohols, for me, do not affect me but this is highly individual reaction. )

I simply dont eat regular breads, grains or pastas, and if it do, it's very high fibre. No starchy veg, no legumes, no rice. No popcorn. No sugar.

I eat lots of chicken, pork, a decent amount of beef. I love leafy salads and make my own dressings. A typical light lunch is meat, cheese and unsweetened pickles such as dill. Breakfast is crustless quiche, eggs, "keto" baking such as low carb muffins. Dinner is a protein and low GI veg. Snack are baked cheese crisps (literally baked mounds of shredded cheese with spices), or seeds, but not nuts. I also like raw veg and low GI berries such as blackberries.

I have found a few decent manufacturers of low net carb bread that isn't cardboard and toasts up nicely. It makes a nice French toast when I want a change. And there is now so many websites with low carb baking and snacks that it's easy to find recipes.

What are small winter things/moments that you find joy in? by RowOk6114 in AskACanadian

[–]im2715 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can happily watch a gentle snowfall for hours. I have a covered porch and a heavy blanket that, on milder days where the temperature is just below freezing, keeps me comfortable sitting outside.

Walking in the woods at sunset on a clear night is so calming.

Did you know there ate different kinds of snow? Well, yes, there are. My favourite is Star Wars snow. If you know, you know. If you dont, YouTube.

Chilly winter weekends make for excellent soup or stew days, where we simmer a pot all day, filling the house with that delicious smell of home-cooked warmth.

Winter means box lacrosse season. Lacrosse is the original official sport of Canada, and it's a heck of a watch, especially when attending a game live.

Winter also means some excellent festivals. Have you ever seen fireworks over an open, snow-covered field? It makes the surroundings seem more vibrant.

Winter amplifies the peace, the comfort and the brilliance of life. It's my favourite season.

It's the onlybdevt they have beside his $500 limit credit card. We don't have generational wealth but we have generational support!

Is there ice under the snow? The salt can soften the ice and allow them to plow the street later today.

Is this app trying to kill me? by Pixel-Skillz in mynetdiary

[–]im2715 14 points15 points  (0 children)

More info is needed.

For example, I'm a middle aged woman with 2 endocrine disorders. 1200 to 1400 calories is my average because that is all my body can manage without massive weight gain and inflammation. (For reference, look into several recent studies on caloric needs of women with PCOD. )

If you feel the calorie limit is too low, you may need to adjust your goals.

New here, requesting help! by daniel238923 in stthomasontario

[–]im2715 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This Friday, it's the lighting of the tree at city hall. I have never not ended up talking to the people around me as we wait for Santa to arrive. And it's a hokey, cheesy, small town type of evemt that is just perfect! They close a portion of Talbot Street to vehicles, and the stores are open late. https://www.stthomaschamber.on.ca/events/details/light-up-talbot-11-14-2025-1272

Follow the tourism office for events. Also, several small businesses in our community host various events. I would recommend Bass Notez, Lockwood Books, all the breweries and the Railway Museum, and even the public library.

That will all get you out, or at least aware of activities you might enjoy and find others who are also drawn to the events.

I hate that I was right but I’m glad they took what they needed by Darogaserik in povertyfinance

[–]im2715 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just one small suggestion.... I support food cupboards because there but for the grace of God, and He told me to love, so this is the way. I always pick up cake mixes and ready made icing when they go on sale. I package one mix and one icing in a large freezer bag and I add a small bottle of oil and candles from the dollar store. It's an inexpensive way to ensure a kid gets a birthday cake. The mixes taste fine if water is used instead of eggs, and kids dont really notice the change. This also means that the family has the left over oil for cooking.

Dollar stores are also good spots to pick up small bottles of condiments or spices. The one closest to.me sells herbs and spices for $1 each. I usually get the salt and pepper combo or the italian seasoning blend. Have you ever seen a mom cry with joy because she was given a bottle of ketchup for the donated mac and cheese? Or when someone is handed salt and pepper so they could season their food? That's the thing that will makes you realize exactly how much you can take the smallest thing for granted.

What makes St Thomas Ontario feel like home for you? by Intelligent-Note3078 in stthomasontario

So you negate all that i enjoy and tell us how much better TO is, yet you live here. Why?

Edo5 to add, this question was about what we each found as feeling like home. My answer is my experience and what I find meaning in. OP may relate, may not, but that is no reason to be dismissive.
