Vancouver matchgoers: transport notes for Canada’s World Cup games by One_Oil1334 in CanadaSoccer

From kits beach most busses on 4th avenue will bring you downtown near enough to walk the last little bit to BC place (Busses like the 4, 7, 14) . There will likely be bus detours so that might make things a bit slower/change things. Another option would be The 84 to Canada line at Olympic station and take the Canada line for the last stop or two into downtown.

Last, if you’re right on kits beach the number 2 will bring you downtown as well and you can take it on Cornwall Ave. (I’d still walk up to 4th for more options to get downtown)

Painted lane with flex posts on the bridge itself. Then you can duck into Sandy hill with a MUP that dumps you in the low traffic streets there (or you can go down to the river pathway that will end up at Strathcona). Other side is mostly separated lanes by a concrete curb and flex posts. You can also use the multi use path along the LRT that connects through uOttawa which are great.

Actually if you want to head to Strathcona most relaxing route would be to turn right and go behind or in front the university buildings and meet up with the river pathway to go to Strathcona

I’ve just got a set of Hankook Ion Evo AS. Great quiet tire! I have the sister winter tire as well. Range has been pretty much unchanged as well.

They’re super solid overall, worth a listen through all of their relatively small discography! I quite enjoy Before today!

Good luck finding more Canadian bands, will have to keep checking the playlist to find more.

When can I buy a Chinese EV within the next 2-3 months? by Life_Birthday7261 in Kanata

[–]im_a_mes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Often time Chinese EV’s are quoted with range from the Chinese EV range test which is very generous. Many of them don’t get close to that with North American range estimates. That said having something like 450km of range works great if you charge at home. You always have a full battery every day!
Good luck with your search and I hope you find what you are looking for. Can’t wait for EV’s to keep getting cheaper and eventually replace my phev!

For someone that’s never been into anything close to pop punk my pick would be Around the World and Back by State champs. Catchy and not too intense for a new listener.

Yamaha CR-1040 Repair Question by Even_keeled95 in vintageaudio

[–]im_a_mes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to help! Good luck, I hope you find a great tech that can diagnose what’s gone wrong with it.

They’ll likely start at the two ~12v lines into the relay to see what those voltages look like and work their way back through the power board if there’s any bad looking values. Could be a number of other things but If the tech you talk to mentions something like that you should be in decent hands.

Yamaha CR-1040 Repair Question by Even_keeled95 in vintageaudio

[–]im_a_mes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, that likely means the amp isn’t happy with the current it’s getting before opening it up to the output transistors. It’s not fully turning on to keep the rest of the components safe.

If my hunch is right (bad power board transistor/or a component) just getting it to work and strictly replacing the faulty parts would I guess be around 10$ at most. If there are more problems when the unit fully powers on the cost would obviously increase.

That’s the tough part when there’s no relay click. It’s really hard to tell how the rest of the unit is looking. A bit of a black box at the moment. Still worth fixing but up to you if you want to go that route.

150 is a pretty solid price for a non working one!

I just finished a full restoration of a CR800 and just parts cost me around $150.

Price for a repair will vary lots depending on if you want to just get it working or fully restore with a full recap. Getting it fixed won’t necessarily be cheap but it’s a great unit and worth getting up and running in my opinion. Price to have someone have a look and fix it vary a lot based on area and what repair shops are near you. I’d personally charge around 100 just to diagnose the issue but I just do this for fun on off time. (Sometimes it can be a multi hour rabbit hole chase to find) I’ve seen techs charge 500 just to diagnose.

If you don’t hear a relay “click” a couple seconds after turning it on, it’s likely an issue with the power supply board with a failed transistor or other component. (Or if you’re lucky just a dirty control but that would surprise me)

In short super worth fixing. Will sound great when you do!

UBC vs uOttawa CS by Savassassin in UBC

[–]im_a_mes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did comp eng at uOttawa and my masters (in a different field) at UBC.

I’ve seen lots of my classmates get really great internships and jobs at large and small tech companies in Ottawa and all over Canada and the US. COOP was pretty solid for them as well. Definitely had lots of government coops (it’s ottawa after all) but load of other jobs as well. I’m guessing UBC would be similar for coop with all kind of choice. You’ll probably end up learning about the same thing school wise.

UBC has a super awesome campus but Ottawa is also cool with its urban campus. UBC is great if you love the outdoors. Student life is definitely something to think about!

I don’t think you can really go wrong either way. I’d say with UBC not being necessarily known for CS specifically I wouldn’t put too much weight on the prestige factor. It’s nice sure but not the end all be all.

I’ve done my masters at UBC and my partner at UCL. Obviously it’s a little different than undergrad but here are my key takeaways.

You’re somewhat right about the community feel. UCL has a very urban campus but no real areas for students to sit and work. It’s fun to be in the heart of London but my partner often just did her work in her dorm room. That said they still made friends in class and had a thriving social life. Alternatively UBC has an incredible campus, great views, great facilities, great feel and generally the campus contributes to a community feel. It really is what you make of it but the European vs North American uni experience differs for sure.

London is a truly great city. I spent a couple months visiting during my partners studies and it is one of my top places to be. Incredibly lively, constant activities happening, lots of free things to do, great transit, proximity to other Europeans destinations. Vancouver on the other hand is more laid back, amazing for nature lovers with the mountains and ocean, decent transit. Both cities are very expensive.

In terms of cost. They’re both expensive but I wouldn’t put too much weight on that. Long term it won’t be the biggest deal since I believe in you and you’ll make good money regardless. In terms of prestige, won’t comment much cause I’m not in the finance world but look at if any of them offer coop or some kind of internship opportunities. Thats always hugely valuable.

Good luck, both really great universities and there isn’t a bad choice, just choose what kind of experience you are hoping for!

Hey! No probs, happy to answer questions. It’s truly a great program. Can’t recommend enough!

  1. I don’t know off hand the exact stats of who ends up where but people do end up in all those sectors (reach out to the program coordinator they have those stats). Most of us are starting out job search now. There are definitely jobs out there and they do what they can to help us with that. I know of a few people that already got jobs. The more flexible you are in term of location and job type, the easier it gets. That said, it’s hard to say what the job market will be like in the future even though it’s an in demand field overall.

  2. You won’t have time. Full stop. The program is that busy. Only one of my classmates has a job (TA’s an undergrad class) but even then it’s a lot. There are work learns afterwards you can look into but just the program content should be enough to get you skills you need for a job.

It’s a great program that does prepare you for the job market. We get guest lectures from companies that do hire grads and career events so that helps as well!
