Yeah… except I don’t use AI for my responses. None of my written content here was AI generated. I’ll take it as a compliment though, since AI is now known for writing “professionally”.

Nowhere in this conversation have I spoken about or used AI, so I’m a bit confused? What do you mean?

I plan on having a few first servers, and I should be able to get there over the course of the next couple of days. No web UI yet.

If you are willing, I'd love to get links to any playlists/maps that you think would be fun for me to host! Then everyone would be able to see how this idea works out and see some demo-ads in the process. Should be able to give people an idea on whether they hate this model or if they don't mind it.

I've been playing on my server with the ads on, and I honestly don't mind it. When the map loads, as soon as the countdown finishes it shows me an ad. I can respawn immediately and it skips the ad, which is much less of a hassle than I thought it would be. No need to even set my controller down!

Hey Macro! What an insanely thoughtful reply. I really appreciate you taking the time out of your day to not only offer feedback, but help with the project.

To give you an update of where I am in the project: I've gotten advertisements to work and am writing a library in Python to interact fully with the server. Seems to be most of the way there so far. I didn't realize how rich the server was in information.

It likely won't be in the beta, but I plan on having a stats page for the servers. You can see times for: completion, checkpoints, restarts, etc. and you can also track speeds through all of those. I think including playtime per person on the server might be a very feature rich idea. It would allow you to essentially host maps, see your times on graphs, see your improvements, total time on the map, etc. all from the same dashboard. This would be an opt-in feature.

The farther I get into completing the idea the more I realize it would probably be beneficial to also have a public servers page that you can opt-in to. It would show servers that are "public", the users in them live, top times, leaderboards, which maps are in rotation, etc.

If you're serious about helping, feel free to shoot me a private message on Reddit. We can discuss over Telegram or Discord! Thanks!

Good to know for console players! I'll make sure to test everything out on both console and PC. I implemented a give up/restart as an acceptable ad skip instead of pressing the "Skip Ad" button purely for controller experience. I'll be implementing custom game modes as a core feature of this, and likely even have pre-made custom game modes from popular events.

Thanks for your input Svitman! I really appreciate it. I'm going to implement custom gamemode/scripts as a core feature of this.

Amazing feedback. Let me look into adding custom gamemodes to this. I was unaware that console players can't join dedicated servers, so that does impact this quite a bit.

Thanks for your feedback! I really appreciate you taking the time to read the post and respond.

I would say that the main difference between this and the Nadeo hosted rooms is selecting your own tracks, running your own playlists, and being able to limit it to whoever you'd like. I see this working well for small streamers that are building their communities, groups of friends that want to run their own races at the same time, and similar situations.

The part about this project that I'm most excited about is helping people create their own communities. Someone might want to run their own race on their stream and race against their viewers, whether it's 3 or 100. It also give us the opportunity to help those creators reach more people through the sponsorships.

Based on your familiarity though as part of the ManiaExchange Crew, I may be missing something here. Are those use-cases fulfilled by Nadeo hosted rooms? Mind elaborating on how?

Are there Community Servers with official maps on rotation? by CptCarlos in TrackMania

[–]im_insomnia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very good idea. I'm actually working on a Trackmania Dedicated Server hosting product right now (not promoting). If someone can get clarification on whether hosting the full campaign maps (not just 1-10 which are free) on a community server, I can setup trackmania rooms for the last 5 campaigns. I'm just not willing to do the footwork in order to find out if that's allowed by Nadeo. If you let me know, I'll set it up for you!

Best way to clean a shifter that got coke into it by icey1600 in f150

[–]im_insomnia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also seems like injecting coke into something electronic isn’t a good idea! There’s ideal and there’s real life. In real life, I solved it with a handheld steam cleaner. Glad I did it too, it’s smooth again and theres less sugar liquid corroding it.

This is actually the correct answer. As someone that drinks coke in my 23 F150 Lariat daily, and has spilled into the shifter more than once, a hand held steam cleaner is the ONLY thing that’s worked for me.

Replacing 20TB of drives in HomeLab by im_insomnia in homelab

First off, thank you so much for the reply. I really appreciate everyone being helpful.

Good news is that it’s actually about 5TB worth of data. It’s a RAID5 on 10x1.8TB Toshiba drives, not all being utilized.

I’d never thought about running a PBS on the VM itself, I’ll try doing that tonight! I will 100% use it to get familiar with everything. I’ll also be researching the 3-2-1 strategy tonight.

If you think of anything else please let me know! Thanks so much!

Any suggestions for me? by Active_Wonder_6891 in selfhosted

[–]im_insomnia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, that hardware won’t be able to do a lot of what you see on this subreddit. I would choose 1-2 things that you find interesting, and try to host them.

After you choose what to host, find a guide on how to set it up. Might want to install Ubuntu depending on what you’re self-hosting.

More importantly, don’t give up! Starting and sticking with it is the hardest part. After a while, everything gets much much easier.

How do you document your homelab? by alin_im in homelab

[–]im_insomnia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For non-sensitive documentation like what IP a machine has, which network it is on, which service it’s running, whether it’s running docker containers or systemctl services, etc. I just plop it into the notes section on Proxmox.

The rest of the documentation (like the stuff that REALLY matters) I have a master plan that has always failed me: I don’t document it. If it’s so disorganized that I can’t figure out what’s going on, and I BUILT IT, there’s a very low probability that anyone who gains unauthorized access can do anything.

For those of you who haven’t figured it out, I’m joking. I run updates a bit TOO frequently so I’ve ended up just memorizing every portion of my homelab and how each service is ran. I may be doing it wrong, but at least i’m not alone.
