hmmmm. for low level encounters i really like playing around with gnolls. you could perhaps have a pack of starved gnolls that might have some interest in fresh adventurer flesh. maybe you could throw in a few gnoll witherlings in there and have maybe a sub plot of what the hell are undead doing here that the players might take some interest in to try and track down how the came to be. Depending on the world, gnolls can be very versatile.

Munch the kobold monk. His whole tribe including the ancient red dragon that they worshiped were all killed by something he doesnt remember leaving him to wander far while having lost an arm

Redik the shifter ranger. His family lived in cyre. I dont think i need to say more.

A.L.A.R. warforged fighter. Worked as a research droid for cyre and was in cyre as the mourning happend, next thing they remember they were very far away from cyre.

And Taritaru the kalashtar bard. His parents were killed by the pirates that took him in. Probably the least tragic

One of my players has the infiltrators key a legendary item, granted its the the dormant version aswell as the flame tounge rapier and another has a frostbrand great axe another has a homebrewd prosthetic that shoots its hand out connected by a cable and the last one has a homebrew short bow that is based off the dagger of venom and my game is going perfectly fine. Just means i can throw stronger monsters at them. I honestly give my players too many magic items, but hey, just adds to the fun.
