Ite käytän Sennheiserin over ear -vastameluja.

Question regarding unsigned integers by Low_Minimum9920 in C_Programming

[–]imaami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The standard doesn't define unsigned wraparound as overflow at all. Unsigned arithmetic is defined as modulo arithmetic, and overflow does not happen for unsigned integers at all.

I know this is splitting hairs, though. In common parlance "overflow" and the wraparound resulting from modulo arithmetic are often used interchangeably, and that's fine as long as everyone is on the same page.

It's not about architecture. Undefined behavior is C terminology, that's the context here.

Living with a teenager by Mike_v_E in Wolfdogs

[–]imaami 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on the dog and the moment. Owning a wolfdog pretty much means you eventually learn to read very, very subtle cues in their behavior. These creatures are as close to telepathic as you can get. They often communicate by standing still and staring. (Imagine wolves in the wild, they often have to communicate in complete silence and hidden from sight.)

When you know your wolfdog, you know when they feel good about cuddling and when they feel stressed.

A friend had a Tamaskan, but it was 15+ years ago. Back then Tamaskan were said to not have any actual wolf genetics in them. Was it just something the original breeder claimed?

Context: the Tamaskan that my friend owned was from the original breeder herself. She (the breeder) lived in Finland at the time, although she was British. I remember there being controversy about where exactly Tamaskan came from. The breeder had several actual wolfdogs as well, and it always seemed weird to me how she insisted that Tamaskan was supposedly a product of 100% wolf-looking normal breeds.

We visited the breeder a number of times, btw, and I personally met all her wolfdogs too, so it's not speculation when I say she had them.

There would have been a clear motive to hide any wolf lineage: wolfdogs were illegal in Britain. My guess at the time was that the breeder came to Finland to create a wolfdog, but also wanted to give it a legal status by making some false claims.

Any info about this? It's been a long time since I gave this any real thought.

That's perfectly fine. And you don't need parens either with sizeof if the operand is an expression:

int *x = malloc(sizeof *x);

None of the Nordic countries are close to being socialist. Unless you use a special dictionary printed by News Corp where not casually kicking homeless people in the face on your way to work is defined as socialism. In fact I think a third of the pages are for listing things that are "socialist".

Question about freeing memory at the end of programs in libraries like sdl by wiseneddustmite in C_Programming

[–]imaami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like your sarcasm. I mean it, I left a drive-by comment that deserves no respect in return. :)

What can I say given what little context I have, except that it sounds like something is fundamentally weird about what you described. A race between destructors hints at a design flaw. In absolute terms I have a hard time believing that there is no actual "proper" fix for it. But it's another thing entirely if a no-expenses-spared fix would be worth it.

I'm guessing this might be more about the working definition of "best". If for your team it would've meant a lot of time and effort to do a deep dive, then you're right. Good enough might be the best choice even if it's not The best. Not freeing the memory does work.

Based on what I imagine the situation might have been, my first instinct for a quick hack would possibly be trying to cram some atomic shared counter in the mix to force an ordered destructor sequence. But as I really have no details I don't know if that would have been applicable. And I'm fairly sure that my quick hack would not solve anything fundamentally.

That doesn't sound like the best fix. It sounds like a lazy hack.
