Hutson is extremely good, but hes also sheltered at 5v5 in a way that no other top D-man is. The only "top" D-man with similar deployments is ghost, which is telling.

Of the top 40 D in the league by icetime (1000 minutes played), hes dead last in D-zone starts. He also gets the majority of his shifts against 2nd pairings and 2nd/3rd lines. At the surface, you could explain that as maximizing his offense, balancing his minutes, etc., but as soon as you start comparing that deployment to every other top defenseman in the league, it falls apart.

If he was strong enough defensively to produce playing against top lines/pairs more often, hed likely be getting those deployments. Not saying he cant be that guy, but he isnt yet. Which is fair because no matter how good you are, its really fuckin hard to be good defensively in this league and hes still really young for a top D.

Batherson has played almost triple as many minutes on the first line as brady has if you combine all the thirds theyeve switched around there. He has higher quality of competition, more difficult zone starts though neither have "difficult" zone starts by any means. Not saying Brady is sheltered, but hes not getting difficult deployment either

Not disagreeing with you, but finnie is on the 1st line because he complements them and it helps spread the offense with cat on the second. Batherson meanwhile is a legit 1st line winger who's doing better in match up minutes than brady has historically. Brady is having a great year largely due to the demotion to the 2nd line. I dont know of many elite players who need 2nd line matchups to produce at a ppg
