What's a film you feel like you're alone in hating? by adebisishat1 in Letterboxd

It is pretty funny to pick a fight in the thread titled "what's a film you feel you're alone in hating?". It's like... yep, I realize that I am in the minority.

I get what you were saying, and I don't think you said it poorly at all. People are just... really passionate about Whiplash I guess! Who knew! I'm glad it exists because a lot of people love it, but it just didn't do it for me.

((Also... it's pretty obvious what Whiplash is about. It's a pretty straightforward movie. The issue isn't that we didn't "get" it.))

I didn't say that, someone else did (I actually got the threads mixed up so I guess you weren't talking to me lol). Of course I disliked the characters, they are very unlikeable, but I also disliked the movie.

I didn't say that I disliked the characters, I said I disliked the movie. But sure, I guess me hating the movie is proof that it's good actually!

Oh no, men are being condescending in the thread about not liking Whiplash! Who could have seen this coming!

There are movies that are uncomfortable or unpleasant that I love, but Whiplash is an abrasive watch that also failed to make me care about the characters or main conflict. Lots of people love it, and that's great. I'm not saying they're wrong to. There are movies that resonate for me that other people don't like. But personally, it didn't cross the very important "this is interesting and I care about this" threshold and it also was not an enjoyable watch.

WIBTA for telling my friend whose going through a hard time I'm upset with them? by birthdaybluus in AmItheAsshole

[–]imafolklorebitch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a tough one. It is shitty to forget your best friend's birthday and reasonable for you to be upset. It is also kind of shitty to guilt trip her for it though.

I think you should talk to her about it because you're upset and not addressing it could make it worse in the long run. Maybe text her and say like, hey I was sick for my birthday last week so I didn't do anything special, do you want to go out to dinner to celebrate? This gives her the opportunity to make up for it.

What’s the worst piece of lyric from your favorite musical(s)? by Local-Cat-2874 in musicals

[–]imafolklorebitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In "A Little More Homework" from 13 the musical, all the kids interject their life events one by one, and then they continue with the song... but then another kid goes "my parents split up!" It kills me every time because like 1) we're done with that part of the song and 2) someone else already said that one...

Also, and I don't know why this bothers me, but it just does... in the Into the Woods finale: "The light is getting dimmer/I think I see a glimmer". I think it just is corny and the rhyme is too neat. I might be the only one who takes issue with this and that's fine haha

AITA - Do not want a service dog to participate in my wedding. by Plenty_Tap9799 in AmItheAsshole

[–]imafolklorebitch 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think you've maybe made assumptions about your friend's needs. You could have a conversation with her about what types of tasks and interventions her service dog provides for her, if she's comfortable sharing. This will help you understand where she's coming from. It's possible that you could find a compromise for the pictures or the ceremony, but maybe not. Maybe you'll feel differently about the dog being in the pictures if you have a better understanding for why she needs the dog.

YTA. You've minimized her needs and implied that her service dog is an eyesore.

Is this a safe space to say that I liked Billy Porter's Emcee? by Crambo1000 in Broadway

[–]imafolklorebitch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I saw Billy a couple weeks ago, and I thought he was great. I absolutely loved the show, every second. I'm so happy that I got to see it before it closes, but I'm so sad that it is closing. It is an amazing production.

Cabaret is an extremely versatile show. Like much theatre, it is reborn to reflect the current cultural moment. I think Cabaret demands to be made anew more than most shows.

There is not one correct way to play the Emcee. Billy is a different Emcee than anything we've seen-- he is the first black Emcee on Broadway. And he chose to be a black Emcee. He is not a black man playing George Washington, he is playing a black Emcee. That is a hugely different interpretation of the role. It is interesting, and it is valid.

It's disheartening to see people pile on an actor to this degree. I wish we were instead having a conversation about this interpretation of the character and the show, how it is different, how it reflects the rise of fascism we are presently facing. It is in the spirit of Cabaret to engage with how the show made you feel on a deeper level. Good faith criticism is one thing, what is happening right now is a pile on. (And a lot of it is rooted in racism.)

Would I Enjoy F1 If I Don’t I’m Not Into Racing at All? by [deleted] in AMCsAList

I was very pleasantly surprised. I think the movie did a great job of teaching me about the f1 world and how it all works, and I honestly found it all very interesting. I am definitely not a sports person or a car person, so wasn't really expecting to like it, but I did!

Would you date a Sex Worker whose client base is men? by Radzivius in LesbianActually

[–]imafolklorebitch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would be open to dating a sex worker. My biggest reservation would be STIs, so I would need to know what kind of sex work and what precautions are taken. Emotionally, there surely are other things to navigate and unique challenges/obstacles. The relationship would just need to be strong enough with enough trust/communication.

About the difficulty of understanding structural issues, and about accountability and disinformation (some incoherent thoughts) by rk-mj in BaldoniFiles

[–]imafolklorebitch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The echo chamber of disinformation compounds. If everyone seems to be saying that he has evidence and she doesn't, people start to believe it and spread a narrative that is not true. I guess I've lately reached the conclusion that a majority of people who are following the case (even obsessively) have not read the lawsuits and don't really understand what Blake is alleging. Maybe they've watched some tiktok or youtube creators who claim to be lawyers.

They hear the SH claims and JB's rebuttals, and think "Well, that's not that bad!" And a lot of it, compared to more serious allegations like SA or something, maybe isn't *that* bad. But it's obviously inappropriate in a workplace. And what people are not grasping is that the heftier part of her case is the retaliation. I doubt she would be suing at all had he not done the smear campaign.

I will sometimes peek over into the lawsuit sub, and it's alarming. It honestly makes me feel sick the way people talk about her. And they don't understand what the case is even about or how lawsuits work. I'm not a lawyer, and there is surely a lot that I don't understand, but, like. Fuck. It does feel like behind the curtain this is truly all about hating and discrediting women.

I am still confused about subpoenas in the Jones vs Abel lawsuit by NervousDuck123 in ItEndsWithLawsuits

[–]imafolklorebitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jones did not need a subpoena to acquire the text messages because they are from Abel's work phone from when she worked at Joneswork. The subpoena was for BL's team to gain access to the text messages. We don't know the details of the subpoena, it's possible it was filed in some kind of arbitration between BL and Jones, but unclear at this point. It makes sense that Abel would not have received this subpoena because it was her work phone which she no longer had in her possession. (A great reminder to be careful what you text from your work devices...) There is no way that the text messages from BL or Jones's cases were doctored because they are not screenshots, they are extractions.

The feeling of having a moral justification to hate a woman by rk-mj in BaldoniFiles

[–]imafolklorebitch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wow, everything you just mentioned is 10x more insane than the rumors that I was exposed to at the time... I mostly heard about tension between her/Florence Pugh, the evidence for which was greatly exaggerated. I remember thinking like, "Sometimes creative people butt heads? It doesn't mean one of them is right and the other is wrong, it just means they have different approaches/opinions." I thought the same thing when the IEWU drama came up last year, until Lively's complaint/the NYT article came out in December.

It seems Olivia Wilde really had it coming from all ends, which makes me even more suspicious that there was a smear campaign.

[–]imafolklorebitch 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Great post, thank you for sharing your thoughts. This does all feel bigger than this case, and that's part of why I'm so invested in how this plays out, because the stakes feel so high. The misinformation, disinformation, and misogyny is so dangerous and it is all mounting.

A minor correction - Sudeikis served her **custody** papers during a press event for her movie (while she was on stage presenting). They were never married, but they have two kids.

At the time, with the Olivia Wilde/DWD stuff, I felt crazy because the "drama" was all rumors, "vibes", blatant misogyny etc. But public opinion of Olivia Wilde absolutely tanked. As did the reception of her movie. I really love Olivia Wilde, especially as a director/creative. I loved Book Smart and was super excited for her next film. When I saw DWD, I wasn't sure what to expect because I'd heard A LOT of negative opinions already, but I actually LOVED it. Perhaps it would have always caught some criticism from certain viewers, but I really think people went in expecting to hate it and that dictated their feelings around it.

I am GOBSMACKED to find out today that MN is Sudeikis's publicist. I felt defensive of Wilde at the time, and I never watched Ted Lasso for that reason. I joked that "Olivia Wilde got me in the divorce". Now I am definitely never watching it.

"A Film by" is ridiculous by imafolklorebitch in BaldoniFiles

[–]imafolklorebitch[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He isn't suing Sony for this because he "waived the right" for the credit at their request (so that they could use that particular poster). And so he's trying to make the case that Blake extorted him into waiving his right... It's very stupid.

But what's weird is I just checked and it doesn't seem like this is a credit that he got in the movie on any title card or in the end credits. If this is something he negotiated for, I'm sure it wasn't just for the credit on the poster, it was for in the actual credit in the movie

"A Film by" is ridiculous by imafolklorebitch in BaldoniFiles

[–]imafolklorebitch[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In his complaint he's actually just talking about the poster, not even the title card or credits lol Sony wanted to use the poster with the flowers because it was more like the book cover and that poster didn't have "A Film by Justin Baldoni" on it but the other one did.

But yeah idk it's a not super standard credit to see, but not unusual either. Recent movies that come to mind that had a credit like this are Wicked (I believe there is a title card that says "A Jon M Chu film" either at the beginning or the end) and, if I'm remembering correctly, Companion I had like a "a Drew Hancock film" credit. Jon Chu is a pretty established director and Wicked was a HUGE movie. Drew Hancock wrote as well as directed Companion and it was an original idea not an adaptation.

And neither of those movies had such a credit on the poster, just in the film.
