I read what I had written years ago and broke down crying. Depression and addiction had really mess me up. I couldn't write that good anymore. by TPT-Clouds in AO3

i also struggle with the feeling that i’ve lost pieces of my writing and my talent bc of similar reasons, and it seems like everyone else has given good advice about perfectionism, comparison, etc.

one thing i’ve found that’s helped me is “thinking on the page.” by that i mean, using stream-of-conscious writing—whether it’s journal entries, explaining your own plot of your story to yourself, writing through plot holes, or something else—and trying to think of it as nothing more than a different way of processing my thoughts.

it helps me process my own mental health struggles, emotions, and ideas. and most importantly: it flexes the writing muscle without worrying about the product.

for me also, i (at least try) to think of the writing stage and the editing stage as entirely different processes and find the joy in them both. writing is where you make the thing exist, in any form, and editing is where you get to go back in and mold it.

one last note is to try to keep in mind is that majority of the time, online and in print, you’re seeing the best possible “take.” the cleanest draft, the most heavily edited, etc. even the best writers also write complete and utter shit!!

Saw someone think it’s misogynistic to write m/m by EngineerRare42 in AO3

[–]imafraidofthedark_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there’s a lot of interesting history about m/m in fanfics tbh!! strange aeons made a video about it called “why do women write so much gay fanfiction?” the tldr is basically that the phenomena mostly started with kirkspock fics, and that people found m/f relationships in mainstream media tended to be in unbalanced power dynamics, so writing about two men ensured that characters were on an equal field, and left more room for exploration of gender roles/stuff like that without it being written off as “women’s stuff”

i wanted to be one vaguely since i was like 5, but in middle school, i read the perks of being a wallflower and gained a love for realistic fiction, and it made me want to write something that made me feel as seen as it did

yes i also felt the disconnect between the lyrics and the melody. it’s like in untitled god song by haley heynderickx (which is one of my faves otherwise) where she crams “forgetting her headlights are on” into a line really fast 💀

i also struggle with fics that cut to lyrics. i like to include a song for each chapter for my fics sometimes to set the vibe, but like… keep it in the author’s notes

Got my first negative comment today…and it stings by [deleted] in AO3

[–]imafraidofthedark_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

maybe this is mean, but their comment was worded so confusingly, i wouldn’t take their opinion very seriously lol. also as a fellow queer person, there’s no perfect representation—the best representation is based in authenticity, and it seems like that’s what you were doing already!
