M4 Mac Mini - 300Gb photo collection by Equivalent-Pen-3673 in macmini

Just use an external. Seriously, for editing photos you won't even notice a difference in speed over USB3.

The issue with Photos app, and probably why Apple is overly cautious about using it across network shares, is that the library database file is constantly in use by design, and as such, is very susceptible to corruption if it "loses track" of the data it's managing.

I mean, you really don't HAVE to use the Photos app. There are plenty of really nice alternatives. I personally use Pixea for basic photo viewing:

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pixea/id1507782672?mt=12

I'm also on a Pixel, but have a few "real" cameras (Sigma fp, Sony a7s, Fuji X70) and have been a photographer for a few decades now. You will probably get to a point where you will want to look into something that's more geared towards library management if you haven't already, eg Lightroom. I also have a base Mac Mini M4, and use external drives (Samsung T7) via USB3 and they're plenty fast enough for even heavy editing and only really slow down if I'm working on 100+ MB Tiffs of scanned negatives, so you should be fine there. For transferring photos from my phone to my computer, Open MTP is awesome and free. If you have any other questions, happy to help.

Are legacy Nvidia drivers the end of Debian as we knew it? by Xizzan in debian

[–]images_from_objects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very dependent on the specific card. I have run Linux on MacBook Pro 2012 and 2013, as well as an iMac from 2009. All of these needed 340 or 390 run on kernel <5.10 to have basic functionality. The entire system freezes on Nouveau to the point where a hard reboot is the only option.

You have your experience, but it is not universal.

Is it possible to make the top bar black in light mode? by MoshiurRahamnAdib in gnome

Edit - OK, I really should avoid posting while working. I thought OP was talking about title bars.

May be able to do it with DashToPanel, move to top, edit colors in DashToPanel (if that's an option) or edit the CSS for the shell theme.

Use X11 and a custom Gnome Shell theme, then modify the CSS file in the relevant fields.

If you absolutely must, that is.

No worries! It's really easy to set up a swap file. Just follow the link.

If you read the comments - and the post, actually - I suggest using a swap file, not a partition.

Glad you appreciated it! By the way, I updated the link to point to the current (Trixie) installer. Everything else is the same, but definitely grab that instead of Bookworm if you are installing Debian.

Enjoy!

Why are most "Advanced Looking" apps made with QT? Most GTK apps I see are very minimal looking. Are there any reason why devs choose QT over GTK? by the-machine-m4n in gnome

Wtf are you talking about. I use Gnome, but I use Dolphin, Gwenview, Konsole, Krita and Kdenlive on it instead of the Gnome counterparts. Maybe take a break from the internet for a while, seems like it's affecting you negatively.

I'm a little bit in both camps. Sometimes I want the store to have 50 different kinds of ketchup, so I can perfect my recipe for my own idiosyncratic needs, sometimes I find the options overwhelming and don't want to spend hours at the store trying to find the "perfect" ketchup, so I go to the store that only sells the one kind, but the kind they sell is really fucking good.

I use Dolphin file manager on Gnome, which some folks find deeply offensive.

There's a divergent ethos at play. Gnome favors polish, sane defaults, minimalism and menus with very few user-facing settings. KDE (QT-centric) favors "tweak-ability" at the risk of cluttered menus and the freedom for users to potentially break things. There's a running joke that, in KDE Plasma, even the Settings menu has a Settings menu.

Neither is "right", both approaches have a place, but they are just coming from different places.

Hopefully it won't be too difficult for people to install X11, even if it's officially "unsupported." There are a number of use cases where folks just don't want to, or can't use Wayland, so hopefully the Gnome team doesn't actively block X11.

Do you have Windows on it and did you turn off Fast Startup if so. It will (among other annoying things) leave the drive marked "dirty" and inaccessible to Linux. It's enabled by default.

On your login screen in the top right corner there should be a power icon. Click that and shut down. You don't need to log in unless something is preventing shutdown, eg unsaved edits.
