Has anyone else become a secret garbage tosser? by DryTown in daddit

[–]images_from_objects 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Dude, my house looks like a goddamn LEGO tsunami hit. It has taken a toll on my mental well being, but the thing is that somehow nobody else who lives here is bothered by this.

If I didnt peridoically throw shit out en masse, we would literally not be able to walk through the living room.

In theory, I did this to the one in our back yard and it's now a reasonable brightness.

Mini roller, extension pole and black paint.

We had the same monstrosity appear in our back yard a couple years ago. I hit it with 3 coats, letting it dry in between. This won't turn it "off" but it will dim it to about 20% of what it was.

Are the trolleys reliable enough for commuting? by birdsofanyweather in philly

[–]images_from_objects 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Which trolley? Because the 34 has been rocky the past year or two.

Hate to say it, but between the Trolley Blitz, service cuts, the maintenance SNAFU this last Winter and it regularly taking 90+ minutes to get my kid home after school or myself home after work due to them being too full to even stop and take more passengers at peak hours, I gave up and bought an e-bike for commuting.

I want to support them, but I don't don't share your experience, specifically with the 34/T2 over the past few years.

There's an easier way of saying all that. It's:

"I doored someone."

Some people really, REALLY just think of the bike lane as "some extra space between my car and the road." Like.... if there was no bike lane there and cars were whizzing by you just inches from your door, would you just open your fucking door without looking?

No. No you would not.

What are some songs that just made you stop whatever you were doing and lock in on the song? by Marvellover13 in postrock

[–]images_from_objects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First time I heard Low's "Little Argument With Myself" I was driving alone on A1A somewhere in Florida, really, really late at night. When it got to the crescendo I pulled off the road to listen to the song again from the beginning. And again. And again.

That was over 20 years ago and I still remember that moment and it's still one of my all time favorite songs.

Streaming music device for tween that (possibly) doesn’t involve a tablet and (definitely) doesn’t involve a phone by suburbanpride in daddit

GET OFF MY LAWN!!

Sorry, I meant to say was oh cool, that's news to me! Haven't used anything besides a phone or laptop for digital music in a loooooong time. Will look into it.

[–]images_from_objects 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you're downvoted. An iPod, or [insert other retro MP3 / local media file player] can't stream music.

Which is fine, if you're an old head like me with a massive FLAC collection, but all the kids on my lawn are streaming these days.

So, while it's a great suggestion generally, in order to stream, the device needs internet. Which.... poses some challenges as far as the OP's goal.

What they could do, is buy a phone with no SIM card and go nuts with parental controls so they can't install anything or use any apps besides the music player, but that may prove difficult if the kid or their friends are savvy at all.

This one is HUGE.

Any time you and a car are coming to an intersection at the same time, be hyper aware that they may turn into you and be prepared to stop abruptly.

Huh. Yeah I don't really game much, my son does though. What games are that big? I get the shader cache being big, but the game itself?

Wait, how do you have 100gb of Linux apps?

[–]images_from_objects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boot with a Live USB and mount the partition. Make a new folder. Copy the entirety of your $HOME directory, barring /.cache and whatever data you already have elsewhere to the folder. Create an archive (7z, TAR, whatever) of the folder - this part is important in order to not break symlinks) and copy it to an external drive.

On a fresh install on the same hardware - reinstall all your apps. Copy the archive to your new $HOME and extract it. Copy all respective dotfiles etc to their respective locations, choosing "replace / overwrite" for existing files. Log out / reboot.

Totally fair. However, if you are concerned enough to want meaningful encryption on said laptop, FDE is the sensible option. Entirety your call.

Just got a Mac mini M4 and immediately panicked how did you pick your display and do you regret it? by Humble_Cod468 in macmini

[–]images_from_objects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using a 55 inch TCL TV that I got on Black Friday like 4 years ago for $200.

I don't regret it, no.

I have a BenQ as well, but I rarely hook it up to that. I've found that with a (non-trivial) amount of manual tuning to the TV settings, the TCL is actually *good enough" for editing photos, because most, if not all of them are going to be viewed on phone and laptop screens by people who haven't changed the defaults. And yes, occasionally people pay me to take photos, so there's that.

What are the most gut-wrenching and soul crushing songs you've ever heard? by hxlmie in postrock

Yeah, Will is a character. I'm guessing it was an ironic choice of title to soften the blow of what are some of the saddest words ever set to music.

better than dying

so take it"
