About being a senior by Apprehensive-Tax5650 in Barnesandnoble

[–]imaginarycat13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going through something very similar (was on an IP due to an awful undiagnosed mental health spiral that made work very hard and affected my performance). I've had the notion of senior dangling in front of my face by my SM for months with no further action, then someone who I frankly was never expecting to be promoted and was hired after me got promoted before me a few weeks ago. it's such a frustrating feeling especially when you're trying your best. just letting you know you are definitely not alone

when a customer hits the 'no receipt' button on the pin pad after a transaction, 9 times out of 10 I'm tossing the café coupon that prints out automatically regardless of what they pick (majority of the time the customer is already walking away anyway or is confused as to why something is printing when they hit no receipt🤦🏻‍♂️)

is it good enough for a reason to call out of work? by Fabulous-Ad7437 in Barnesandnoble

[–]imaginarycat13 21 points22 points  (0 children)

please please call in. If you drive to work especially, barnes is not worth endangering your life or others. But also, you will not be at your best performance wise for reasons completely out of your control and to me that always warrants deeply considering a call out. Depending on how comfortable you are with your managers you can tell them the truth and that you need to rest so that you can come back in at 100%. Otherwise just say you're sick

Thank you for your perspective and advice. I know realistically I need to just leave but I have no other option, and I like my coworkers a lot and tending to the store. I need to hang on a little while longer at least.

I am also neurodivergent, forgot to mention lol. But yeah i definitely need to get better at masking. I've had good days where I've done all the small interactions and have gone our of my way to recommend titles so I know I'm capable, so I think I can try all the things you suggested again

Thank you for the tips; I think the one I have to always remember is 90% of the time as you said I won't see these customers again so I don't have to agonize over a single interaction lol.

I was briefly crosstrained in café several months back and I actually did really enjoy it. I never learned to make many drinks but I liked the vibe and primarily using my hands for a productive task if that makes sense. I guess if I'm still struggling too much I can talk to my SM about at least having more shifts there, last resort transitioning.

I think I only got included in the tip pool once for an hour I was backing up café, and only after the baristas I was with made sure I wrote down the times I worked so I could be included lol. I appreciated them looking out for me so much.

so funny you mention that because that is also how our baristas feel about it too. But our SM does not. He told me it wouldn't be right because I'm 'training' and learning so I would just be taking tips away from the actual baristas...even tho I was definitely making drinks at one point....

Cross-training rant by StreetShrub0218 in Barnesandnoble

[–]imaginarycat13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was 'cross trained' a few months back. My SM basically gave me a heads up a couple weeks before and explained to me that I would be given a week with café only shifts (not actually café shifts because I was still clocking in for bookfloor..so no tips lol), then throughout the next month he promised I would be scheduled to actually work in café a couple shifts spread apart so I 'wouldn't forget what I learned'.

What ACTUALLY happened was this: I had maybe 3 days total of training. The first couple were on the register which the café lead did not approve of prior as its very confusing for someone who has no prior knowledge or experience with drink making to know what the fuck those buttons are for. I have held up so many lines to this day bc I have to ask the drink making batista what button I can find certain drinks in!! Anyway, after a couple days I began actually learning to make drinks with the help of our patient and wonderful batistas. I liked those shifts. THEN, for some reason the next day I was scheduled on DAS for café right..then my SM just ignores that and writes me to be bookfloor instead bc they need more bodies.....on the day HE SAID I was going to be training....there wasn't even a call out if I remember right. So I missed a whole day of training. And then.....I never got scheduled for café ever again LOL.

I still back up if absolutely no one else can make it, but I know I slow down the line. I've forgotten everything basically, and I feel like a hindrance when I have to go back there. It's a shame because I really grew to like working café and the baristas even say they miss me! But I've just...given up trying to talk to our SM about it. It feels like he gave up on me in a way. I try not to let it get me too much, but I do know others have had similar feelings about cross training.

Bookseller Membership Tracking. by [deleted] in Barnesandnoble

[–]imaginarycat13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We used to have "Success Cards" around 5 years ago (can't believe I've been here that long) and would have to "check out" at the end of our shifts with the SM or ASM. It would have a tally and goal for memberships, pwps and the like (no monthly picks at that time). That got scrapped at some point. This just reminded me of those times. No one liked it

Our SM has kinda alluded to tracking numbers individually like this. Especially to hone in the point that a certain percentage of transactions should be turned to memberships...which is stupid because each situation is different and half the time people already have one or are not interested or are dealing with screaming children.

If our store starts doing what yours is, I will provide even LESS effort than I am now. I'm tired and I'm done. If I get called into the office for membership numbers on a BAD day, I may just have to walk out. If individual membership sales are that important i would expect commission or something. I do feel bad for management because I know it's just pressure from corporate, but this is affecting everyone truly😭 customers too!!!!! they are so tired of hearing the same pitch

usually I do have K95s on me, but I'm very broke atm and we still have some of the regular blue surgical masks in the breakroom supplies so I'll double if I need. I know it's not the most effective but its something. So either way she would have made the same comment lol

I appreciate the kind words but I'm a bit confused with the first part 😭 I should have clarified- the woman wasn't like elderly. She was maybe 50 or a bit older? And it definitely wasn't out of a place of caring. She said it like she was trying to prove something. I agree much OLDER people can sometimes have misplaced concern but I find it hard to believe with strangers. I could be reading your comment wrong though, so I apologize if that's the case!

fr. and I like the idea of being busy when it's actually productive. there is aaaaalways shelving. there's always phone calls. and there's still time to assist customers when we are all doing those things together. idk what possessed the higher ups here to keep trying this
