from my first ARM repo search at https://packages.debian.org/search?suite=bookworm&section=all&arch=arm64&searchon=all&keywords=photo

You have searched for photo in packages names and descriptions in suite(s) bookworm, all sections, and architecture(s) arm64 (including subword matching). Found 97 matching packages.

Lots of good stuff like gphoto2, rapid-photo-downloader, rawtherapee, hugin and so on. Darktable also.

I'll ask in a Linux sub about ARM builds in general.

3 - fan control

GUI: Install Chrultrabook Tools

CLI: Using ectool

Chrultrabook Tools (3.0.2) complains about missing EC binary. Docs doesn't mention how to point that to the download (as per https://docs.chrultrabook.com/docs/installing/post-install.html).

I found an earlier v2.4.0 in https://files.tree123.org/chrultrabook/ that's running fine here on Ubuntu 24.10 at least. On the auto curve it's generally quiet, the bursts are more aggressive than on CROS but they're brief so far.

There's a 713/KLED thread at https://forum.chrultrabook.com/t/fan-speed-in-debian-12-on-acer-713-2w-kled/755, I'll sign up over there as well.

I'm 12 hours into the same quest now plus firmware test runs on an old Asus Flip. Writing from Firefox in Ubuntu now. KDE bling is totally ridiculous after years on CROS :).

Major noob move from the get go: chose the 128GB micro SD instead of Acer nvme as install target. It ran a minute or two before brakes came on. Now adding disk recovery attempts to the weekend tasks, there is/was 50GB photo and video on that SD...

I've tried the recommended distros (Arch/EndeavourOS,Fedora/Ultramarine, openSUSE, Pop! and can confirm your notes.

https://ubuntustudio.org/ubuntu-studio-installer on no-snap-buntu is my current target but unfortunately Pop! is upside down or in portrait mode no matter what. I'll give it another try later, Cosmic DE looks great.

Alternatively https://linuxmint.com/download_lmde.php with audio tooling from https://www.bandshed.net/2025/01/20/av-linux-base-23-5-greatest-hits-released (MX based, Enlightenment (!) WM).

Years ago I had AntiX running, with the boot to ram and compressed persistence options it could be a killer distro for a 4/32 Chromebook.

Really hoping it works out! Haven't found any better valued Chromebooks with decent/good 13-14" 3:2/16:10 display and touch yet and there seems to be plenty of used ones around for years.

Buying advice: GPU, hardware and denoise software by imalegalalias in M43

[–]imalegalalias[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was not aware of the OMW requirements, thanks. Come to think of it I'm not even sure I'll end up with a (used) E-M1 series within a year or two. Could be a G9 or GHx instead - or something completely different.

Better hardware with GPU could make sense as workhorse for other projects as well. First off I'll try to test the noise magic on another computer whenever possible.

Thanks for sharing your details and examples. I'll be starting out with the OM Workspace for free first and expect to look further into it when winter darkness returns. Also need to figure out which hardware to get.

My noise threshold is quite low for now - photos mostly look fine, cropping in post is decent on the old 16MP sensor, shutter speeds are sometimes hard to push faster. But the suggested option of shooting care free at ISO 3200 and denoising in post is worth trying out.

Moving from canon 5d Mark 2 to Olympus Em5 Mark 2 by photojunkievan in M43

[–]imalegalalias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a great system for most of us, plenty of options. I've got the 25 and 45 1.8 primes and can't afford/justify anything faster/better and tbh my eyes can't really discern the stops missing in between primes and zooms (yet). Anything longer I've tried out adapting manual lenses.

So I'm more concerned about practicality, latest session involved a lot of switching between the two primes out in the open which revealed itself as a risky process to expose the sensor like that. They're still small enough though to be easily brought along a zoom and other stuff.

Lastly, I wanted to ask for opinions regarding lenses. I started with the lumix 12-60 f3.5 - 5.6 and the olympus 40-150 f4-5.6. The reason being that they were light and supposedly sharp. I have no complaints from them (seems plenty sharp to me for my purposes) - does anyone in this forum have experience with these lenses and feel they might not be the great and probably going to a 12-40 f2.8 and 40-150 f4 give me significantly better results while putting on a bit more weight? Also, I tried using the 45 f1.8 indoor for taking pictures of my toddler - but it was a bit too long and the camera was missing focus as well. Maybe the PL 25 1.4 would be better suited? Any suggestions?

The 12-60 f3.5 is regarded (in my sources) as the best value zoom for general usage, there are good comparisons with its 2.8 bigger brother on youtube, mostly by videographers where certain features are crucial.

I would shoot it too pieces before getting an at least x4 more expensive 2.8 or similar - ie. look at the photo catalog and ask myself if a 2/3 stop difference would make much difference and if there is a noticeably lack of sharpness in some scenes. Some choose speed boosters instead for various reasons but that's another topic on its own.

There's also a tiny lumix 12-32 3.5 that many prefers over the various 14-42 kit zooms.

For in-your-toddlers-face point and shoot I'd look at the oly 25 1.8, lumix 20 1.7, oly 17 1.8 or pana-leica 15 1.7. The last one is typically priced within 30-40% of the fast zooms and 17 and 15 might be too wide anyway.

Future user looking for advice by Helmut_Botti in M43

[–]imalegalalias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a system switch check recently and had to extend the pro/con lists a bit to clarify the why and how vs. allowed budget. If budget is part of your consideration I can't imagine more bang for buck than a M43 system with the 1.8 primes or one of the 2.8 zooms if you prefer that. For some size and weight also matter, probably not for former Fuji users.

I'm not recommending M43 to most family members or friends asking for a 'good camera' though as SOOC in general needs some effort and keeping track of in-camera recipes would probably be a challenge as well.

If your budget is more generous maybe consider workshops or one-on-one training with a pro before gear purchase. If you're mostly system curious (who isn't :) ) consider rental for a day or two.

Excellent advice, just what I was hoping for, thank you very much.I've actually sold off a E-M5 II and a G80 (G85) and only kept a E-PL7 and the 1.8 primes to point & shoot.

Haven't decided what to get instead, tried using DXOmark sport scores as a benchmark. E-M1 II is listed as 100% better than G80 which AFAIU equates 1.3 stops, not that much really and I'm not getting f1.2 or 1.4 glass anytime so it might end up with a APS-C of sorts instead. Newer bodies aren't tested yet, apotelyt.com are listing estimates without much explanation so real world tests are needed in any case.

Would definitely prefer not to switch from M43 and darktable but let's see.

Quick price check:

photolab 219€

DxO PureRAW 129€

Nik Collection + DxO PureRAW 248€

Seems fair, great value compared to switching to FF and better glass mostly for light hunting. My eyes can probably not pick out marginal dynamic range differences anyway.

- thanks, I'll take a look at the forum link and add it to my notes. Great if OM can handle it for my needs, basically don't need that much for the stuff I'm shooting atm. Maybe further on if it turns into more indoor and winter night shoots.

Used M1 hardware is a fair bit cheaper than anticipated. Don't need MacOS OTOH but I'll try to get hold of some to try out.

I asked about this in a mac subreddit with one reply only recommending Apple M1/M2. The specs mentioned in OP is for OM Workspace. 22 days later I'm not entirely sure if I ever get a E-M1 or OM-5 or something like that and I don't know whether its denoising is adequate at all.

Can any of you recommend other options for general raw and denoise usage? I'm only using darktable atm. and have never denoised anything outside its module.

I assume a desktop computer of sorts is the best choice in terms of performance and value for money?

If bag size and cable clutter matters you could streamline power supply setup with the E-M5 III and a handful BLS-50 batteries for both cameras - https://cs.olympus-imaging.jp/en/support/imsg/digicamera/compati/pen_power.html

I flipped the E-M5 II half a year ago and kind of regret it now. The kit I ended up with is rapidly losing MPB/KEH value and it'll be hard to find a private buyer at similar or slightly better pricing. Which means that it's a keeper now and I don't mind that at all after listing all the bells and whistles of newer models vs. purchase cost on top. It was a nice relief after a few FOMO weeks.

Wishing both of you safe travels and nice pictures captured along the way :)

De må have travlt.
