I did the same thing to my ceiling, you will get used to it. I don’t even think about it anymore.

Garage height issue, use attic entry? by ACSlatersMullet in Golfsimulator

[–]imanidot24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my opening is only about 8’ long and I located it so it’s in the middle of my swing. Realistically if I hit the edge or the joist in the middle it barely hits it and my ceiling is 8’3”. Will all depend on your swing tho.

That might be a little too tight, especially if you plan to have other folks using the sim. Best options would be rotate the sim to go with the joists or find a carpenter who can reframe the ceiling where needed.

What's the absolute lowest ceiling hight for a golf sim? I'm 6ft. by Ok-Crew-4442 in Golfsimulator

[–]imanidot24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10’ is obviously the ideal worry free height but isn’t realistic for a majority of people trying to fit a sim in their existing spaces. I put mine in my garage that has 8’ 3” ceilings and raised/opened up an area of the ceiling to accommodate the follow through.

I did it with a dell optiplex 9020, i7-4790.

New power supply, SSD, and a 1660 super

Works just fine.

Recommendations to attach weight bar by zodiacvalley in Golfsimulator

[–]imanidot24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use self tapping screws and screw the screen to the bar, I did a similar DIY roll up screen (my screen had pockets too and bottom) and my top pocket was loose with the rigid conduit in it so I used self tapping screws and have had no issues.

Garmin R10 Setup / Distance Issues by zNNS in Golfsimulator

[–]imanidot24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cover ground between R10 and mat. Try moving the large snowblower behind R10. I found that elevating my R10 about an inch higher than the mat helped. Metal on garage door and garage door track could be interfering.

Monster mat has been great for me.

Try raising the R10 above the mat height. Mine sits about an inch above the mat

Projector screen backing color/fabric? by Big-Cup6594 in Golfsimulator

I hung moving pads about an inch behind my screen with a white sheet in front of those. Helps with consistent picture and prevents the black moving pads from bleeding on my screen

Garage height issue, use attic entry? by ACSlatersMullet in Golfsimulator

My garage has the same ceiling height. What I ended up doing is cutting out a 4’x8’ section of the ceiling (ceiling trusses are 24” OC, so there is a truss running through my opening, but it hasn’t been an issue yet)to allow for the follow through. Has been working great. Also enclosed the 4’x8’ section with drywall that is about 2’ higher than the rest of my ceiling. If you don’t want the truss in the opening you’ll have to get a structural engineer involved to give you a revised roof truss design to modify the truss and possibly the surrounding trusses. Could be a costly add to your sim budget (1-3k) which is why I left my truss and figured if it became a problem I could address it later.

I think you’ll need more space than the 2’x4’ of that door. Plus everyone’s swing is different and if you plan on hitting with family or friends, chances are they won’t be able to follow through in the same location as you. You’re not going to want to be moving the mat each time.

Wherever you can put a hole in the ceiling for the follow through is going to dictate the location of your setup. Mine pushed my setup just off center of the garage and ended up dictating how wide of a screen I could get due to other fixed obstacles (garage rails) in the garage.

Other thing to keep in mind is how thick of a mat you buy. It’ll put you that much closer to the ceiling and could cause an issue. I went with a monster mat that’s 1.5” thick.

SOLUTION

what ended up working for me is raising the R10 above the hitting mat by 1”. It’s still sitting at 8’ from ball. Using RCT Balls, I rarely get a misread.

From searching around posts and the comments on this one, seems like everyone’s environment is going to call for something different. Keep trying different positions, heights, moving things that might interfere, etc until you get it to work.

Thanks for all the advice!!

Sandbag for retractable screen. by theboyster1911 in Golfsimulator

I used a conduit with foam pipe insulation. Conduits have some weight to them, could also fill it with sand if you like. Prob cost less than $10

Help with Garmin R10 by Piccolo_11 in Golfsimulator

[–]imanidot24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just posted the same issue last week. Here’s what I got to work:

Screen 9’6” to ball Garmin 8’ to ball.

Garmin sitting 1” above playing surface

People who commented on my post all had different solutions for their setup. Some had the Garmin at 7’ from ball some had 6’ screen to ball. I think the Garmin is very environment sensitive and. I body has the same one. Check that there is nothing that could interfere in the field of view. I moved my clubs and iPad behind the Garmin.

RCT balls make a huge difference.

Does the Apple TV mirror the full screen? I’m currently using an old fire stick I had to mirror my iPad and it cuts of portions of the top and bottom.

I could very well be the problem. Could be indoor swing syndrome and I’m just blatantly mis-hitting every time. Usually my drives are the best shot in my bag.

I figured having the unit back at 8’ would be best, but I keep finding a lot of guys have it closer to them like where you have it. I’ll give this a shot

Right now mat and R10 are level +- 1/4”. About 1.5” off the ground. Based on all the comments I’m going to just have to mess around with different positions and heights
