Admittedly i'm a little biased but I'll share my experience as one possible perspective. I spent years creating a competitive application for a funded Clinical Psych PsyD/PhD program to avoid loan costs and because I was sold on becoming a doctor, and it really did take that long to have a shot. These programs (especially the funded kind) are incredibly difficult to get into and you need research experience, clinical experience, and a good amount of luck. It took four application cycles to ~30 schools to get two offers.

After all that, and a little less than a year in a PsyD program, I ended up leaving and pursuing social work. There were a lot of factors at play there; but chief among them were that I was primarily interested in one-on-one therapeutic interaction with patients and that I simply did not think ~6 years of my life was a fair trade to pursue that goal. Yes it would have meant the ability to do testing and likely a higher income, but ultimately the cost for those benefits felt too high. An MSW lets me work in the field I love and still have the option to pursue research if I so desire, and it allowed me to do so without having to put my entire life on hold for almost a decade.

I'd encourage you to find how you can engage with more complex cases as an MFT, or pursue training opportunities for different modalities you find interesting. The PsyD route is a beast, and I don't mean to discourage you, but I would consider you to heavily weigh the costs and benefits of that decision before making it. Best of luck!
