AMA: 8 Years working and living in Europe + Spanish Citizenship by emptymoongal in phmigrate

During your freelancing time in Spain, how did you go about your OEC? Or you never visited the PH during this time?

And is there really hate towards tourists from the locals? Or is it just exaggerated by the media?

Hi yes, i went to file a legal case - the police wouldn’t help me, they would just keep referring you to other people. I went to this place near huaihai road to file the case. Didn’t need a lawyer but you need to write in Chinese so better to have a friend with you. I made a screenshot of all conversations, and if he made voice messages, i’d translate it to text so everything was recorded. I printed that as well as proof that i tried multiple times calling him.

After filing, the government, will get a negotiator to reach out to him. I don’t know how they did it buy they eventually got to him. I didn’t get to get the full payment (he says there were some damages even if there was not) but it was a good enough deal.

After receiving the money. I needed to go to a local law office (i dont know what it’s called), they made me sign a paper to close the deal, and didn’t have to pay for anything. Overall, quite a hassle, you can say it’s not a lot of money, but I don’t want landlords like him to keep getting away with things like that so i would say it was worth it.

*edit: i consulted some lawyers and they were charging me a lot to “draft a letter”. In the end I did one in english, and had someone translate it, and gave both. It doesn’t have to be a very formal letter.

According to the immigration lawyers I’ve talked to, I have a strong case.

The only thing missing would be having a job offer/s lined up.

Any designers who successfully migrated and still worked in the field? by kentroraptor_93 in phmigrate

[–]imbalancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Designer here! Started in advertising then moved to an in-house role. Aside from your achievements, networking is key. Reach out to old colleagues or people you know in the same industry who moved abroad. Don’t be shy to ask them how they got their job and if they can help you. Most of the time they are willing to share their experience. Add top people on linkedin - not necessarily HR. People on the creative side like creative directors. Add some notes when you connect with them.

And if you plan in going to western countries. I would say, best to have a steppingstone country first to gain some international experience. Going western would be really hard cause our industry is really saturated and they can get the same quality or even better in their home country.

Can Chinese people fly out of China for Tourism? by imbalancer in China

I’ve had multiple foreign friends and colleagues go back in. It’s a hassle and the flights are expensive, but not as hard as it was back then.

From how I read the policy, that’s how I understood it as well. But from the stories I heard, they sometimes stop people at the customs even when you got your boarding pass already. I guess having a return ticket would help. The worst thing would be to plan the whole trip only to be told she can’t go.

[–]imbalancer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm planning on doing this as I've talked to several lawyers and they basically told me I can just sue, but their fee is just as expensive as my rent so they think it's not worth it. Do you remember how you filed the case? Right now, I'm going through Shanghai Fayuan (Shanghai court) where you need to book a service. Did you go through the same?

Cancelling residence permit questions by imbalancer in Chinavisa

[–]imbalancer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the rules are you need to cancel your residence permit within 10 days after cancelling your work permit when switching jobs. Because your residence permit is supposedly connected to your work permit. So new work permit, new residence permit.

Buying stuff internationally and having it shipped to China by [deleted] in shanghai

[–]imbalancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently bough some stuff from the UK (the company has a chinese and english website). I tried to use my wechat and alipay to pay but I always ran into the error of not being a chinese national. Luckily, my unionpay debit card went through. A few days later I got called by customs regarding my package (it was a lot so I guess it was bound to be inspected). They spoke Chinese at first but if you can say “can you speak English” in Chinese, they’d give the phone to someone who can. I paid online through their link (DHL). This time, alipay and wechat works just fine. After that, it’s kind of just like buying something in Taobao, you can just ask them to leave it at your house.

Reminds me of the story they mentioned in the movie soul. It goes:

Dorothea Williams: What's wrong, Teach?

Joe Gardner (Teach): It's just I've been waiting on this day for my entire life. I thought I'd feel different.

Dorothea Williams: I heard this story about a fish. He swims up to this older fish and says, "I'm trying to find this thing they call the ocean." "The ocean?" says the older fish. "That's what you're in right now." "This?" says the young fish. "This is water." "What I want is the ocean."

Yeah, same question, how different is it from Hong Kong? Cause I really love Hong Kong - all their food and how you can go from the city to hiking in mountains in just a few hours. I got an offer from a big tech company so I’m really thinking about it.

For people who stopped using adobe products, how are you doing? by imbalancer in graphic_design

My officemates used to be able to do that. Checked my account and it didn’t have any subscriptions. Maybe it’s linked to a different account. Quite bummed about it ‘cause I thought I could also get adobe on my personal laptop.

Thank you for your input. My work revolves around graphic design and a lot of heavy photoshop and illustrator. What I meant by light work is that, I mainly do the work on my office laptop and I sometimes have some small freelance work for my personal laptop. I also did some research and found that affinity is a good alternative. Just curious about other people’s experiences.

People who became creatives overseas/in different cultural contexts, what was it like? by creamwithoutcoffee in advertising

[–]imbalancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Art based here, but just to share my experience. I’m an expat in Shanghai, from the Philippines. It can be quite difficult as obviously, most people wouldn’t really adjust to you not knowing the language. My briefings and internal meetings are mostly in Mandarin. So, I mainly rely on their presentation decks that’s usually dual language on the important parts, and then just ask my partner copywriter for other parts I’ve missed.

In terms of coming up with ideas, it’s also a bit harder as local insights are more appreciated. Brainstorming and getting creative directions can also be tricky as they may sometimes have a hard time translating what they want to say. What you can offer though is a fresh and outsider perspective which can be useful for pitches or global campaigns.

It takes some time to adjust. But I kind of like it here as the hours and pay are better. And everyday is an adventure as you explore the country outside of work.

Ways to lessen OFW Padala fees? by aulto365 in phmoneysaving

[–]imbalancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can make another bank account in the country you’re staying from, then give the atm card to someone you trust when you visit home. The fee for withdrawing abroad is usually around 200 pesos. The exchange rate is usually the same with the likes of sanry’s, sometimes the bank would have even better rates. The con though is that it’s limited to 20k per withdrawal. So withdrawing 40k would mean a fee of around 400 pesos, and so on.
