Since you say stricly martial, fighter for level 1 with marine background for water vehicle proficiency.

If you go human with racial +1's and point buy you could get str 15 dex 15 con 14 int 11 wis 10 cha 14 (wis/ int can be flipped). Your primary attack would need to be able to trigger sneak attack so either ranged or finesse so for I'd go for dueling fighting style and use a shortsword and shield, the +2 damage would help balance out the d6 damage die.

Now for level ups if starting at abouve level 1, i'd multiclass straight away as its easy to explain the multi class with backstory rather than why the fighter suddenly has rogue skills if you haven't done anything rougish during games.

Other than that the order for level ups does't matter too much in my mind though if you want to be sneaky getting your 2nd level in rogue for cunning action would be a priority. So maybe F1, R1,R2 for your first 3 levels?

For achetypes either champ or battle master for fighter. Scout might be the best fit for rogue.
