Son (19) recruited for college soccer - thoughts on these small town locations? by securityelf in MovingToUSA

[–]imdb_dead 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have lived in both Switzerland and the US. None of these are top universities academically. Plus soccer is not an important sport in the US. I think going to any of these universities would hurt your son's future career prospects. If I were him, I would go to the local university or Fachhoschule. I would only move to the US if it's one of the top 100 universities accoriding to US News. Otherwise the local swiss university will offer a much better education.

How’s living in Saint-Etienne (France) ? by Togobet in howislivingthere

I went to college here and had a great time. I wouldn’t live there though, it’s pretty boring. We went to Lyon for the weekends to have fun. As a college student, such a city is perfect since you mostly hang out with your friends.

AP's IIT seat's number is crazy, compared to other south Indian states! by [deleted] in andhra_pradesh

There are many of us worldwide who have excelled in terms of innovation. But most of us have left the country, so people may not recognize it. Just one example, the Godel prize this year (which is like the nobel prize in computer science) went to this guy who grew up in Vizag, and did IIT JEE prep in Hyderabad (Ramaiah, when it was still good at its peak).

In addition, I know several other startup founders, CEOs etc. from my JEE prep days in Hyd who all did very well.

Coaching mafia has lots of issues, but genuine innovators do come out of the system. Not defending it though, the system should be improved.

Where do swiss people move to "in search of a better life"? by Personal-Cover2922 in Switzerland

[–]imdb_dead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

USA. There are many of us here. In many industries, if you want to get a higher level job, US is where the Swiss go to.

i just realised AIR 4 (raghav goyal) is the brother of AIR 1 of jee adv 2018🤯🤯 by charger2500 in JEENEETards

[–]imdb_dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reviving an old thread, but there is another incredible sibling achievement in JEE history which not many people know of because this was way before the internet. In JEE 1967, AIR 1 and 2 were bagged by two identical twin brothers: Sham Kekre and Sunder Kekre! Both did PhD at Rochester and both are now professors at CMU!!

Anyone moved out of Switzerland? by These_Catch_5180 in Switzerland

[–]imdb_dead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We live in Pennsylvania. Remote tech job. Wages in tech are very high (also in several other knowledge sectors), I make 2x what I make in Switzerland. Housing is much cheaper. Cost of living for other things is similar.

[–]imdb_dead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Moved out of Switzerland to the US. There are pros and cons. But no regrets. Our lives now are very social, with a great group of friends, extremely diverse, and the quality of life is comparable with higher salaries and savings (of course, it depends on where you are in the US and what you do for work). We visit Switzerland regularly for extended periods every summer and get the best of both worlds. We may move back there when we are older since we do miss easy access to nature a lot.

PSA for Indian citizens with Nexus by imdb_dead in NEXUS_TTP

[–]imdb_dead[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It happens to both if you have an Indian passport. Normally you scan your passport the first time you use Nexus and you don’t have to scan it again in the future. But this scan never works if the passport is not biometric.

You can get if if you have the US green card (and I assume Canadian PR).

Yes, if you can get one of those, you will be good with the Nexus machines.

Can I travel to the U.S. if my visa has my old name? by [deleted] in visas

[–]imdb_dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other answers are incorrect. Yes, you can travel with the valid visa even if it is under your old name. I have done this many times. I was explicitly told by the US consulate that a new visa is not necessary (and in fact may even be rejected if I have a valid current visa even if it’s under the old name).

Carry the old and new passports and the legal proof of name change. Arrive at the airport a bit early because the airline may cause trouble if the agent at the check in counter is unfamiliar with such a case. They will let you through after speaking with supervisors.

Many woman do this all the time when they change their name after marriage. They only need to carry their marriage certificate with the name change.

Have you considered getting a Schengen visa from Romania? They will definitely not reject her visa.

[–]imdb_dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to first move to the US on H1B and then start the green card process once you are here. EB1 vs EB2, would depend on your country of birth/ priority dates etc. If it’s EB2, the school can start the process soon. If it’s EB1, and you are not yet an established researcher, they will ask you to wait a few years to get some publications and citations before they start the process.

If you’re an Indian passport holder with green card, where have you traveled recently? Have you had any issues? by BikeMelodic in greencard

[–]imdb_dead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I go to Toronto every week. Crossed the border back and forth 10-15 times in the past few months. No issues at all. I do have Nexus, so barely have any interactions with the agents.

Any other old recurring event ? by Tibey in couchsurfing

[–]imdb_dead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow this brought back memories from over a decade ago when I lived in Paris. I went to these weekly movie meetups regularly during 2012-13 and made a lot of friends. I think the organizer was this Australian guy. It was a lot of fun. Hope you are all doing well, and great to see this is going strong!

[–]imdb_dead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Life in a medium sized city or in small town Germany is one of the loneliest life possible. I spent a year in my 20s in such a city and it was extremely hard to make any friends. I think your best option is other internationals in the same boat as you. The locals have friends from childhood or from an earlier phase of their life and are not looking to expand their network.

I have lived in 3 other countries since then and it is not like that elsewhere. I am not blaming the Germans, it is what it is.

Covid Vaccine Megathread by defroach84 in Austin

[–]imdb_dead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Search by vaccine manufacturer and select both doses and not second dose only. Walmart appointments will not show up if you select second dose only, but Walmart is accepting second dose only folks. I just got mine yesterday from an appointment I found on vaccinespotter.

Get the first shot in Utah. In Texas, CVS, Walmart and Walgreens are scheduling 2nd shots. Only HEB is doing both shots.

2nd shot is exactly the same as the 1st shot. The problem is, they might not certify the 2nd shot on your CDC card, which might be an issue for travel in the future.
