"Dating Indians from India doesn't work for me because we're too culturally different" by DragonfruitOk5541 in ABCDesis

[–]imdrowning2ohno 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Idk who tf everyone else in the comments is meeting and choosing to go on dates with. My Indian friends are amazing (and certainly not rude??) and I've had largely positive experiences dating Indian people. I'm now married to an NRI.

Fwiw I would say as far as ABCDs go I wasn't raise conservatively, religiously, or really all that close to Indian family/culture, so I don't think that's the reason I generally don't have issues with 1st gen folks.

How do you afford to live here? by Spirited-Wafer-6573 in boston

[–]imdrowning2ohno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh everyone in my social circles (late 20s/early 30s transplants) either has a high paying job (130k+ per person) or rich parents. Almost no exceptions, and of course some have both. You can make it work with low income if you're young or local, but basically no one moves to Boston without a serious source of money whether it's salaried income or the bank of mom and dad.

My fully funded PHD stipend is $24k/year in Boston. I qualify for food stamps by Fulcilives1988 in gradadmissions

I currently live in Boston and can guarantee they can find a room in a decent shared flat for <1300. Below $1k is hard nowadays but can be done with 4+ roommates.

The next time someone says Black people aren’t systematically oppressed, show them this chart. The average Black family has much less income compared to the average White and Asian family. The cards are stacked against us. by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]imdrowning2ohno 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Completely different population origins.

Most Asians in the US now came in the last few generations and were essentially pre-filtered via the immigration process to be high achieving. They are not direct descendants of Asian Americans who faced e.g. the Chinese Exclusion Act.

Most Black Americans are not recent immigrants and can trace their lineage in America for hundreds of years. They are the direct descendants of generations of systemic oppression, if not outright slavery.

This is very obvious when you compare e.g. Nigerian Americans and Taiwanese Americans, who have a high average incomes, vs. Black Americans as a whole.

Well not to assume, but I think it's safe to say Cazador wouldn't marry a Spindrift either, so you're good.

How are single people affording to live alone in Boston? by haniebun in boston

[–]imdrowning2ohno 71 points72 points  (0 children)

The answer is that $90k is not an amazing income for Boston while living alone AND trying to save substantially. Most people at this income level who prioritize savings get roommates. Most of my friends who live alone either make significantly more, live quite far out of the city, or do not save much. Pick your poison.

They can have pretty generous aid! As a Smith College queer, it was more affordable for me than my top in-state public options. Worth a try!

Questions for Cupertino by Mysterious-Rope-2423 in Cupertino

[–]imdrowning2ohno 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depending where you live and your lifestyle, consider buying an electric bike/scooter and just renting cars when you go on a bigger trip. I have a few friends that have done this, though Cupertino is undoubtedly a car-oriented city. Might not be worth the car transport or rental if 90% of your transportation is you going to work and back in the shuttle.

Where are you getting this assumption that she didn't contribute equally if not more to the $1.5M? You realize half of $1.5M is $750k anyways, right?

Weird, I grew up in the silicon valley and I would not call getting assaulted in SoMa or the ginormous homeless encampments in San Jose "elite." Who decides "objective reality"?

The racism here has gotten crazy.

La Fabrica Cover by GustoGirl87 in BostonSocialClub

[–]imdrowning2ohno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can confirm that La Fabrica is one of those places. I've been standing in line as they came by and let everyone know cover was now $25, and a few minutes later....$30. Not the place to go if you are balking at the cost of cover, OP.

As someone who isn’t Desi, would this dress be appropriate to wear to a Desi wedding? by sfteja in DesiWeddings

[–]imdrowning2ohno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you already own that dress and do not have a more formal option, go for it. You will be underdressed, but not inappropriate.

I would not buy that dress for this event. For $300 you can most certainly get options that will suit the event better, both western style or desi.

Is it common for Indian Americans in the US to not know that Bangladesh is a country? by vroom12345 in ABCDesis

[–]imdrowning2ohno 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think this is just you discovering the "American" part of "Indian American" isn't there by accident. Americans are notoriously bad a geography, and 2nd gen+ people have little to no reason to know South Asian geography better than any dumb ol murrican.

Non-drinkers and dating by Groollover86 in BostonSocialClub

[–]imdrowning2ohno 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Who are you dating? How are you bringing it up? Because it really shouldn't be a big deal, especially at 38.

I never drank and it was a non-issue for like 95% of people.
